You should have a path of runes that you need to follow when grabbing that thing :cookieMonster:

I'm thinking I need to have multiple ways for the floor to collapse, going to experiment with having to follow a certain path as everything crumbles and the like.

Even just randomizing the way it falls, or the type of trap it sets off would be neat, as you wouldn't know what to expect.

of course.

do you know if badspot has any of those "degree" things?

I'm not sure, but he always mentions he went to clown college.

So I assume he was really into juggling and wearing goofy shoes.

Real answer for that though, if I had to suggest anything I'd say go to school for computer science.

This way if game dev fails you have something that is still useful to get a real job.

gotcha. :)

Note: Rotondo does not suggest this path to become a game developer, though the parties were fun.

Just a quick question because I know you'll see this. What college degrees do you/badspot have? in relation to computer science/game design etc

I dropped out of high school in an attempt to become a professional skateboarder, and also because school was a pretty horrible fit for me.

At the talks I do about game stuff, I love answering the question of "how did you get into game development", because no one sees my answer coming lol.

Also I'm going to be doing talks at two colleges this year, so remember kids drop out of high school and one day you too can speak in front of college students.

After PAX this is going to need some tweaking to make it not predictable, but it's a pretty neat start.

Make it green.

This isn't a super exciting update but this is just a note for game designers, always try to look at a bug as a feature.

Originally there was a bug that placed these empty paths on the dungeon, that were surrounded by pits.

Instead of removing this I decided to actually implement it as a feature, and put items on the pit paths.

Which then lead to me adding items at the end of some winding paths, which uses basically the same detection code.

It's a small detail but I feel like these things add up over time.

Seems a bit strange to add something like that in a game with small rooms

Room size is increased in the next update, also paths are bigger and more varied.

Plus dash boots are less a movement thing and more a short charge attack in this game, fun to smash things with though.

arena mode

This is going to be fun to work on, I think I'm just going to have all the game modes accessible from within the inn.

So if you wanted to deathmatch you just go to a different room you unlocked.

This is more boot like I guess, hard to make such a small sprite resemble not only a boot but a speedy boot.

you're also forgetting the speedrun teleporters that instantly kill you if you teleport into a wall

I honestly can't think of a neat way to apply a teleporter to this game, jetpack is even a stretch but it's fun to control.

Not sure how you'd do a teleporter.

will there be functionality for a run to be endless/mod more themes into it?

I'm hoping, if not at release definitely after.

This item still needs some work, but it's super fun to use so far.

Surprised it took me this long to add dash boots lol.

Definitely need to add some weight to them, and more of a startup.

Edit: also that sprite is temporary, I just had that in the folder for a while.

okay like this is spelunky just admit it

add a shotgun already

also on an unrelated note, when do we backers get to create our rooms/content? with the game design nearing its final form, it seems the majority of what's left is just bugs and content.

Hopefully soon, since as you said the design is starting to wind down. Things are starting to feel really solid.

....shotgun you say hmm...

will more level themes be added after release? because right now it sounds like it's just cellar, ice, and forest, and then that's the end of the game

At minimum for release I need to have 4 themes + a secret unlock theme. As well as numerous hidden levels and various content.

With the revamps I've been doing to gameplay, the graphics, and overall everything we're not going to be able to make the may release date as predicted on the Kickstarter.

But overall I think it's a great thing, as the game is getting much better.

Some of the stretch goals will have to be added after release though, mainly the open world hub.

to balance out the jetpack, maybe give it like a set amount of fuel (that could be purchased from the shopkeeper) or alternatively, a chance to explode after a period of extended use

The way it works now you run out after a few seconds of jetpacking, then your fuel resets when you touch the ground.

Going to have another fun thing to show tomorrow hopefully.

I'd really like to get the update to the beta out before PAX but I'm going to fully concentrate on PAX stuff so it may not happen.

I really wish armor didnt count for you losing your health bonus on boss fights

like seriously it really loving sucks losing out on the health up item just because you got caught in a bad situation on an annoying bossfight ONCE out of the entire battle and got hit.

Yeah same here, that would have been a good design choice.

Then you could have strategies where you risk waiting on picking up the armor piece until later, or buy it from the shop after clearing the floor.

What's the deal with the "Badspot is a jerk" board?

I may be remembering this wrong, but I believe it was due to Badspot not wanting to make an off topic board.

People complained and wanted off topic, so Badspot made the "Badspot is a jerk" board as a joke, which was off topic in all but name.

i dont wanna be that graphic design control freak but this is what i had in mind

you dont have to take the speed for account tho definitely

Looks neat, I'm good with how it looks for now though.

Though I might add the yellow flash when you take damage around the outer rim.

Here's a discord thing for you guys. I was gonna post it earlier, but I didn't want any fake Rotondos.

Discord seems pretty good, hopefully people find good use with it.

This is probably the silliest item I've added yet, but every game needs a jetpack.

While it's not great for doing damage, it's good for getting secrets, and avoiding things.

Going to be really unbalanced regardless, so will cost a lot of money as well as be a bit rare.

you're missing an I in exhibiting

This is hilarious to me as I'm pretty sure I rewrote that word like 5 times because it didn't look right lol...

Feels weird to type that many I's.

Something odd - I just crashed when I went down a level.

Do you have a console log?

There's a few crash bugs still sitting around, I fixed a few in the upcoming update.

Mainly I fixed that killer one where your players bounding box would just go negative sometimes when being deleted.

I'm hoping this is responsible for most of the crashes people have got.

Edit:

Now the gold collecting gui part works exactly how I want, it shows you how much gold you gained/lost in that time period and it also goes the hell away lol.

just curious; how pissed (if at all) does badspot get if someone brings up blockland at PAX? given that you two have done this a few years now i feel like someone must have brought it up at some point.
especially with this BL development downturn - if someone actually does show up and ask i feel like badspot's day would be ruined at that point.

It was fun meeting random people who played Blockland, as long as no one's an starfish it's fine.

It's not like Blockland doesn't make money for him still so he can't just ignore it.

It's awhile off still but are there any plans to attend PAX Prime 2016? Or are you keeping it to East since you live in Boston?

I'd like to attend PAX Prime, but a bunch of things would have to go right for that to happen.

Mainly I'd have to get the game out and it'd have to be pretty successful to warrant more advertising and exhibiting that far out.

Though I still may attend Prime as just an attendee or help out with one of my friends booths, who knows really.

Been working on a bunch more refinements and tweaks, and a few new concepts entirely but too early to show that stuff.

Though I did take some cool screenshots of some of the varied paths we have now.

I can agree with almost all your points here (I dont use a controller so I can't say anything for myself on that one)

like seriously you've got all these cool looking and unqiue guns, yet the only ones I ever end up using are the basic ones (like the Winchester, the shotgun, the machine pistol etc.)
because they're the only guns that feel like they put out good enough damage to be worth using.

I just wanna massacre bosses with an oversized railgun and BFG, but they do so little its rarely ever worth pulling them out in the first place.

Yeah, it's a shame as there's so much good here. I feel like just a few tweaks would greatly improve things.

I'm actually now more interested in giving nuclear throne a try, I'm curious to see how they handled a few things.
