When do you plan on finishing it fully?

Early next year, however indie development can be crazy and unpredictable at times.

I posted an update to the Kickstarter, talking about the Kickstarter anniversary and Stage 1 of reward collection:

https://www.kickstarter.com/projects/rotondo/forgettabledungeon/posts/1739907

Stage 1 is collecting the universal information needed from all backers including the name for credits, and contact email.

This contact email will be used for future reward collecting for things like the characters, design monsters and what not.

Thank you all my wonderful fans.

To celebrate today I played Bugs Bunny Birthday Blowout on the nes with my grillfriend.

Not a good game, but at least it is appropriately themed.

After which we played double dragon 2 which is a much better game.

I hope we all enjoyed our birthday today.

looks great! but what about scrolls - without text we wont know what a scroll does?

For potions and scrolls there will be a little blurb at the bottom just stating their type.

The goal is to avoid over explaining things.

Still messing around with it, but I just want to avoid numbing the player to words at the bottom of the screen.

tbh rotondo i feel like you set the kickstarter $$ bar real low, but its good in the sense that it made it easier to get funded in the end. being indie it must be tough for you to actually devote a lot of time on this game while having other jobs.

thank you for your continued work on the game + your continued participation in this community, however slight it may be. i really look forward to this game, esp modding it if support for that ever happens.

Thankfully I've been able to work full time on the game for the most part.

The Kickstarter happened at the right time in my life where I had enough savings, and life was cheap enough that I could sustain myself.

The money from the Kickstarter helped immensely with all of this though, not only being able to afford hardware but also do shows like PAX.

Me and my friends have played games like Hero Siege, Risk of Rain, Portal Knights, etc. I got to say, this will make a great addition to the list of games we play together.

I'm happy to hear it, hope you guys dig it when it releases.

I've been working on cleaning up a lot of stuff lately.

Now that the game is getting closer and closer to an actual release I wanted to clean up some of the interface issues.

The main stuff I've been concentrating on are those small annoyances, like not being able to know what you're picking up consistently when interacting with objects.

I've been doing this with new tooltips:

For reference this is not how you do tooltip:

I've also been taking out some of the words in the game as an experiment.

So now when you go up to a fountain it won't say "drink fountain" so much as just the tooltip will appear.

You then get a message after interacting with it.

This is to promote the rogue feel of learned knowledge, you don't know what something really is until you've interacted with it.

did u and badspot share hotels and beds ;)
how rough is badspot in bed
does he wear his pink underwear after love

I will answer none of these questions but here is a picture:

Feel free to take from that what you will.

I posted an update to the Kickstarter:

https://www.kickstarter.com/projects/rotondo/forgettabledungeon/posts/1716261

I'm going to start posting there more often with more work in progress stuff, this was too much silence this time.

I think I'm going to go lie down for a while, feeling a bit loopy.

I really need to stop running myself down so much at these conferences :/

So I went to steam dev days with Badspot again this year.

It was a lot of fun, I even got sick! yay...

Anyway, some of the textures and sprites here are placeholder but I got dungeon entrances loading up in the overworld:

Now I just need to add a spoopy castle in the center, some random caves for players to enter and I totes have a game.

Just curious, do you have a general time frame for when you're going to start contacting your backers about rewards?

More importantly, do you have an estimate for when the game will be available on Steam?

I'm hoping to get that in motion after the October update, I'm planning on adding a small playground area to give people an idea of what's possible which will aid with reward ideas.

I'm hoping early next year. Ideally I'd have the game complete and in final testing around December.

This is very satisfying, happy I got this to work.

Timing is still a bit off, but it's fun to crush enemies/objects like this.

out of curiosity, what does the push block do when a person/ai is in front of it?

Yeah, can you squish other players or is that not a thing

Right now the plan is for it to just not push when blocked by a player, possibly play a "blocked" sound.

I might make it squish monsters depending on how difficult that is.

Thanks for all the suggestions, I've been playing a lot of different games lately to get a feel for what I want to do.

Is there any extended gameplay footage of this game that's up-to-date? I'm going to buy this eventually, but I'm just interested in seeing what it looks like right now.

At this point all the let's plays are pretty out of date sadly.

I'll most likely put some new footage together after the overworld update.

I took a break from working on the overworld for a bit and made a push block.

I'm surprised I haven't made this sooner to be honest.

Also ignore the odd graphics, I was on lowest quality testing things.

that grass texture looks a bit too noisy

The textures are just the normal dungeon textures slightly re-worked.

These will change over time once the final overworld themes are figured out.

the water looks decent, but the blue on it is horrible

i'd say either change it to some more appealing blue, or if possible, a sort of gradient (lighter and greenish-er at the top, darker and purplish-er at the bottom)

The water is actually just placeholder for now, but surprisingly most people are ok with it besides the color.

A part of me wants to make a nice reflected skyline in the water, as well as a few other fun effects.

The other part of me thinks he should be finishing the game.

So yeah, at least the water color is going to change. If not a better texture/gradient, thanks for the feedback.

Things are going well with the update, nothing too new to show besides a few changes to walls and things.

One thing I've been thinking about a lot lately is the progression in the game.

I was wondering if you guys could suggest any games that have a similar roguelike feel that have great progression in them.

Things like leveling up, unlocking stuff, or even just the want to keep playing to see more.

The main way I was thinking of the game was basically spelunky + Zelda, but now I'm thinking I should branch out and see how other games older/newer tackle some things.

So yeah if you have any suggestions for games I should check out, or suggestions/ideas in general I'd love to hear them.

I made it so your player shows up as a little blue shadow blob thing when you're behind walls so it's easier to keep track of yourself.

Edit: A little clearer example since I chose poor colors for that gif:

the water could be transparent with a tiled bottom matching its biome
that way you could add some neat depth to it and details later on like coral/sunken ships/fish/treasure that you can't get

I've been experimenting with different looks for the water, so far nothing I'm too fond of.

I do have it transparent at the moment though.

Special new awesome feature for the overworld, futurama characters attached to the walls!

Actually this is a new system I made to render smaller details in the overworld quicker.

Sadly it lacks the destructibility of the dungeon walls currently, however this is necessary to keep the framerate decent.

This new system also allows for a lot more variety of smaller details for the world, so that's exciting.

Added the same effect to the top walls, and the water.

I still need to think of some effect for the water, either shiny or slight wobble of sorts.

Shadows from the floors casting onto the water could be nice too.

oh, I missed your edit (already had the page opened and was looking at the pretty pictures)

the closer angle makes it look so much better, could be neat to have little bridges going places and/or some kind of boats sitting around fishing

how are you generating it, first the land shape and then putting a biome over it?

Bridges would be neat, not sure of the best way to implement them with the current generator but I definitely wan them in.

It's basically an extension of the normal dungeon generator, each tile is basically a predrawn room with some on and off randomized tiles.

I also modified/wrote a new path algorithm for some parts to give it a more open feel.

you ever thought about adding ambient occlusion?

Good idea, I just added some fake AO for now.

Eventually I'll get to fleshing it out a bit more, or making the real thing.

I think with some more darkening on the top walls, and some added shadows on the water it's going to look nice.
