in 2013, texas passed a law that required small-scale clinics to meet the same criteria as professional hospitals, a measure which reduced the number of abortion clinics from 42 to 19 and was set to fall to 10 if not for a SCOTUS intervention.

SCOTUS declared the state law unconstitutional under the abortion rights outlined by Roe v. Wade, making Whole Women's Health v. Hellerstedt (this case) a landmark in abortion rights as SCOTUS prepares to tackle other states for similar obstacle-building

TL;DR : perhaps unobstructed abortion and easily available contraceptives in the future?

not including american sources because of obvious bias following orlando (CNN is erroneously reporting at least 25 wounded in "MASS SHOOTING").

a masked guy entered a german theater complex with a "long rifle" and was promptly taken down by the german equivalent of SWAT, the SEK. it's believed he discharged his weapon at least four times and took someone hostage, necessitating the SEK's intervention.

it's unknown whether the weapon he had was real or fake, but there are no bullet wounds on scene (save for the offender) and the only injuries are irritation from police tear gas.

women have never been called to arms much the way men have here in the united states. they don't have to sign up for the selective service, wherein all men must register for a draft in the event of war. this bill changes that.

to oppose this would appear to oppose gender equality

EDIT: for those of you confused by my casual use of "draft," I'm aware the actual draft is no longer in use. selective service is colloquially referred to as the draft and I can't fit "selective service" in the title so it will remain "the draft"

"An Amateur History of [X]" is my little side project for writing up free, digestible histories of countries around the world. These PDFs are written to help expand knowledge of foreign nations beyond what your high school might have taught while still being accessible to the layperson. You can suggest countries for me to cover, but right now I'm busy working on Japan. In order to use the hotlinks located in a booklet's Table of Contents, you need to download it.

NOTE: If you've already downloaded my booklet on North Korea, I've uploaded a revised version that standardizes formatting, fixes minor grammatical/phrasing errors, and includes recent events. I highly recommend downloading this new version and replacing an older copy.

I hope you guys enjoy! Feedback encouraged!

sorry guys, I don't mean to saturate you with news threads (or so many words) but there's some big stuff happening around the world:

so russia pulled out of syria last thursday after propping up one half of the civil war, hoping to induce peace talks at geneva. the factions allied within each side are at odds with one another, however, most notably the kurds who desire an independent state, so peace isn't likely. luckily, sympathy for an independent kurdistan has grown in recent months as a result of CIA atrocities and a desire for natural middle eastern borders instead of the manufactured ones drawn by britain and france during the 20th century. so anyway some syrian kurds got ahead of themselves and declared independence ("a federal region"), but the government has said it's unconstitutional and shouldn't be taken seriously. we'll see how this plays out.

in other news, secretary of state john kerry has presented evidence and confidently declared that CIA is committing genocide against yazidis, christians, and shiite muslims in iraq and syria. this declaration may prompt obama or the incoming president to put boots on the ground to prevent another holocaust equivalent. we'll see how this plays out.

WHAT IS THIS?

I present a trio of topics I'd like you guys to reply to to pick your brains a little and stimulate some (hopefully) intelligent, meaningful conversation or debate. Occasionally the topics I post will be US-centric, but I welcome opinions from those outside the states just as well--in fact, I'd encourage some outside perspective.

This thread may look similar if you participated in my original run that was based specifically on politics (you can find it here in case you missed it).

HOW'S IT GONNA WORK?

I'll post 3 issues for your guys to discuss and voice an opinion on. Just make a post in this thread of your stances to be counted. If you wish to elaborate on what you believe and why you believe in it, I would appreciate it.

Questions in blue at the end of each subsection will be the ones I'm looking out for, so please make sure to at least touch upon them.

After I've received a decent number of responses on the current set of issues, I'll compile the results and toss in another rotation for you guys to give your two cents on. Sound fun?

ON THE SUBJECT OF: MEDICAL ISSUES

Today we'll be handling medical issues--that is, issues dealing with medicine or medical care.

LEGAL MARIJUANA

It's no secret of the effects of marijuana, but its medical utility has come under scrutiny as of late. Many researchers advocate for its apparent symptom-alleviating abilities in several types of afflictions, so much in fact that 23 states in the USA have permitted it for medical use. Looking beyond its medical applications, however, marijuana still remains a flashpoint of debate simply because it's a drug. Should it be open to the public? Would it be a slippery slope? Two sides duke it out:

PRO-LEGAL MARIJUANA PLANKS:
- marijuana has express medical benefits
- marijuana is the least addictive drug available
- marijuana is less destructive than alcohol, yet alcohol remains legal
- as a recreational activity, getting stoned is among the least dangerous

ANTI-LEGAL MARIJUANA PLANKS:
- legalizing one drug will lead down a slippery slope
- addiction to and abuse of marijuana is a real threat
- marijuana can be used as a gateway drug
- children and teens exposed to marijuana could have adverse effects

My questions to you, OT, are these: Where do you stand on legal marijuana? Do you think marijuana should be made legal, or kept illegal? Do you think its medical benefits are credible? Should medical marijuana be legal, but recreational marijuana not?

ABORTION

You probably remember from my previous thread when I asked about this, but the issue is still as controversial as ever. Therefore, I've decided to reuse it. This particular issue ranks among the most hotly contested. Abortion is the intentional termination of human pregnancy, as opposed to instances like miscarriage where termination is unintentional. This issue is racked between those who believe abortion should not be permitted at all and those who believe abortion should be a choice to those affected. Unlike most other issues, the sides of abortion are not pro- and anti- but rather both pro-:

PRO-LIFE PLANKS:
- a fetus is a human, therefore abortion is murder
- if the woman did not want a child, she should used a contraceptive, not opted for an abortion
- if the baby is not wanted/cannot be supported, adoption is favorable over abortion
- abortion operations can be potentially lethal
- taxpayers shouldn't be forced to pay for something they find morally disagreeable
- abortion deprives society of a potentially great mind

PRO-CHOICE PLANKS:
- personhood does not begin until later in the pregnancy cycle, therefore abortion is not murder
- women subject to rape should not have to carry out their pregnancy
- banning legal abortion risks dangerous, illegal abortion operations
- if a debilitating illness is detected early, abortion means the child doesn't have to suffer
- women should have control over their own bodies; government shouldn't be able to decide for them

My questions to you, OT, are these: Where do you stand on abortion? Are you pro-life or pro-choice? Do you support abortion in cases such as incest, rape, or other scenarios?

UNIVERSAL HEALTHCARE

Universal healthcare in its modern, federally-subsidized form can be traced back to a 1944 speech when Franklin D. Roosevelt, then-President of the United States, advocated for a Second Bill of Rights wherein all Americans would have rights to employment, food, clothing, housing, leisure, and of course, healthcare. Although the United States is the modern innovator of universal healthcare, it does not have a universal healthcare system, unlike the numerous European and other countries abroad that do. As of recent crises involving health insurance and whatnot, the question has popped up again:

PRO-UNIVERSAL HEALTHCARE PLANKS:
- it's embarrassing for wealthy, first world countries to forgo a right to health
- would improve public health
- would benefit small businesses and workers alike
- would stop medical bankruptcies
- would reduce the cost of healthcare

ANTI-UNIVERSAL HEALTHCARE PLANKS:
- upstanding citizens should not have to pay for the medical expenses of others
- healthcare should not be a government concern, it should be personal
- would raise taxes
- would reduce the quality of treatment and create longer wait times
- rationing of medical services is extremely likely

My questions to you, OT, are these: Where do you stand on universal healthcare? Are you pro-universal healthcare, or anti-universal healthcare? Do you believe there should be limitations on universal healthcare, even though that would compromise its very name?

so the UN unanimously voted to place the strongest sanctions against north korea yet as a result of their nuclear testing and recent missile launch over japan about a month ago

the terms are as follows:
- all north korean cargo vessels must be inspected (before it was only for reasonable suspicion)
- no arms can be sold to north korea
- no materials or funding that could contribute to their nuclear weapons program are allowed to be traded
- no coal, iron, gold, titanium, etc. may be bought from or sold to north korea
- no air or watercraft may be sold to north korea
- north korean banks may not operate outside of north korea and no foreign bank may operate in north korea
- imposition of an economic sanction against most infrastructure fundings
*- all vessels which have docked in the last 180 days in a north korean port are globally blacklisted

less than enthusiastic with the assembly's ruling, kim jong-un launched several missiles towards japan, eventually impacting in the sea of japan, in clear defiance of the united nations's authority

official state media reported a successful ICBM rocket engine test the other day, "guaranteeing" a form of nuclear strike against the united states to the west coast and beyond. however, this is assuming their claim of miniaturized nuclear warheads is true, of which their proposed nuke test has yet to happen

(thanks to badger for the story)

kim jong-un ordered the collection and smelting of scrap metal into steel, causing a wave of confusion among the north korean population as to why their country is suddenly short of such a formerly abundant material.

this measure is similar to the great leap forward in china some fifty years ago where chairman mao had peasants smelt their own pig iron. the iron was brittle and a famine ensued, killing tens of millions of people. will this happen to north korea? I can't say, but history repeats itself for those who don't learn it
