Nope, made it completely from scratch.

Programming language is c++.
Graphics library is OpenGL.
Audio is OpenAL.

Well, sorry about the footsteps, but I can't find my earlier rip and it looks like Valve has re-organized the source files, and they are no longer in GCFs that I can extract.

Yeah I have a dual boot ubuntu and windows.
Thing is spring break is almost over and developing at all is going to become a lot more difficult, as I can only do it on my notebook that can barely get 25 fps.

So once you get the engine running, what will the game be? Combat-based? Something like Super Mario 64 (I will love you forever)?

Also, on the footstep thing, add them. Make sure they're quiet and have several samples to be randomly picked from so it isn't repetitive. I have extracted the Source footstep sounds if you want them. As far as ambient noise, you can use birds chirping and wind.
I got the ambient noise. (you wouldn't believe how much of a hassle it is to find free sounds)
But I'd still appreciate the footsteps.

When you're about to play just make sure you've downloaded after the time in the latest changelog entry, otherwise stuff might break for you.

Try the OLD_OPENGL setting set to 1.
If that doesn't work, post the log again.

Please god no, footstep sounds are so annoying.
Really, does anyone else think so?

At the very least I need some kind of ambiant noise.
It's so quiet.

The look sensitivity is really buggy. if i move my mouse barley it flies up at the sky/ground etc.
You can change mouse sensitivity in the settings.
the whole game's framerate is like 5
You can lower the graphics in the settings.
idk if it was just that there were a lot of people but the chat was so fast i couldn't read it
You probably have an older version of the client.
You need to update.


tl;dr Update the game and look at the settings and you can fix all those problems.

you have to get the newest version, check the change log

To do right now:

  • Names over players heads
  • Sound effects for footsteps, chat messages, players joining and leaving
  • Make other packet types (ex. environment settings) use the same verification system as chat messages
  • make models, lights, and emitters server side
  • admin commands (tele, kick, create, change environment settings)
  • make the heightmap server side (kinda dreading this)

New update, you pretty much have to get this update or you'll just be spammed with packets when you log on with an older client.

can you add like, a gameplay features list to the OP? i don't wanna really download a game if i'm just going to walk around and see trees and weird sparkly stuff for 2 minutes.
Right now it's more about testing and getting the basics down before adding actual gameplay.

I'd love to have some people actually commit to testing with me at a specified time so I can see if everything's actually working between clients.

Pretty much, except the OpenGL version changed.

Yes, I am using windows 7.
Whoops, I think I need to install the drivers for openGL.
Well if you do that, tell me how it goes.


Anyway I've made further progress on the networking.
Clients now ping the server every once in a while and the server can tell if a client has disconnected and will say when one does.
Next update is actually being able to see where other players are.

(apparently there's also an issue with chat messages not being sent to everyone, as I saw someone else had connected and sent messages but I could only see so on the server, not on my connected client)

What kind of game are you even trying to make? Or is this more like a tech-demo for you?

Well first I gotta get the basic networking done.
Once I've got all the stuff server side that should be server side and you got a basic game framework where you can see and interact with other players then I gotta figure out what direction to take this game in.

While I've had many vague ideas I still don't really have anything to work on.
