at some point i released all the misc. projects i had worked on over the years, and toward the end everything serious i worked on was open-source. the main exception i can think of is a server management utility that was highly specialized to a private hosting thing i was doin with friends, which would have been a pretty big risk to make public considering i was like 2 years old and didn't know anything about security

yeah the us federal govt is pretty weak relatively speaking, most powers that directly affect people's lives really only exist on the state level. a lot of people still think of rights and progress as things thrown down to us from the top, and not things to be fought for from the many through grassroots movements. electoralism is an important tool that can be used to shift power balances more favorably, and i'd love to see our electoral system be modernized, but historically, they won't throw you the good bones unless you make some noise about it

liberals will make the mistake of getting comfortable with the biden presidency, but the fight is far from over

the problem isn't that one kind of riot is okay and one isn't, it's the difference in police preparation and response. it's painfully clear that they overprepared and overreacted in nearly every case for BLM protests, no hesitation to have the national guard at the ready and no hesitation to bust out the rubber bullets and tear gas whenever they decided to "pre-empt" violence, while Annoying Orange supporters had the luxury of relaxed, reactive policing. they knew things could turn out like this and refused additional support, they evidently trusted them enough to let them in, and when things went sideways, they refused outside support again. the DC officers seemed to be having a great time in fact. and we know that the DC police have the resources to respond to these kinds of threats, they just...didn't? and i don't know how to explain that

and the point obviously isn't that the police should brutally assault protestors either--again, the point isn't one situation being good and the other being bad. it's how stark the difference in response was between each situation, and how much of an embarrassment this is for the US government and DC police.

even if you think that's all a bit abstract, or believe blm deserved the response it got from police, you should still be able to agree that it was a massive failure that these people were able to storm the capitol building practically without resistance

i mean, technically he's right. biden and friends was already preparing all the excuses like "ohhh sorry guyys we might not be able to reverse concentration camps day 1 :( we'll have to compromise with republicans so we'll have to settle for less guys :(((" and now that their excuse is evaporating before them, they're gonna have to be honest about never wanting those things in the first place

of course i prefer it over Annoying Orange, but it's still going to be a frustrating four+ years
