I hate to reference a children's book but "Frindle" by Andrew Clements is an example of how if everyone is calling a pen a "frindle", it becomes correct English. This is not at all related to how everyone saying a scientific fact is not true.

english is, actually, controlled by the people who speak it. if everyone started saying that "purple" was a synonym of "blue", that's what "purple" would mean, and it would be correct.
