Switchblades are illegal to transport from state to state and to have on federal property. They are not, however, illegal to buy and distribute within the state. Meaning it's like the deal with sale of fireworks. I actually own two switchblades.

Though, you are correct about them being illegal in several states. Here, they are legal everywher but school/school funded grounds, or a fixed blade.
