I got sad, but then laughed when I read the forum comments.
Really it's a joke for me.  You read it, then I laugh at you.

In the interest of equal time, I present the other side of the argument shown in the previous comic.

Help / Re: Server problem
« on: November 08, 2010, 09:22:11 AM »
This can also caused by creating datablocks during gameplay, causing the file manifest to be regenerated.  The add-on loader and various orb changing scripts do this.

Help / Re: Couldn't load a default Add-on
« on: November 07, 2010, 05:23:03 PM »
I that server with no problems and so have several other people.  For this problem to occur, it would have to fail to find the file in the manifest (which as far as I can tell never happens) and then the item_key.zip file would have to either be corrupt or have been modified since the game started.  I don't see how this could happen without user tampering.

Generic solution: Remove all non official add-ons.  Don't just un-check them, delete them.

General Discussion / Re: Blockland Downloaded Fast
« on: November 06, 2010, 01:42:01 PM »
The new file download system required a slightly beefier hosting solution, so the CDN files and the main download are now hosted via amazon cloudfront.  It's an enormous distributed system with local mirrors all over the world, so when you download a file you're always getting it from a nearby server with huge bandwidth.  I've seen download speeds over 3 megabytes per second.

Does anyone else seem to have blockland freeze up randomly? I want to know if it is just me or if anyone else has this often recently.
There is a known issue where the game will freeze for a few seconds when someone connects or disconnects.  Occasionally, it will freeze long enough for someone to get bored and disconnect, which makes it freeze more and you end up with this chain reaction where it freezes for like a minute and everyone leaves.

It is a difficult problem to debug because it does not happen consistently and the freeze is not from CPU usage.  CPU usage actually drops to zero while it's happening.

I am having this problem that whenever the CDN DOWNLOADING thing pops up, it freezes and downloads forever.

Did the window become unresponsive or did it just sit there?  How long did you wait?  If you have to check the cdn for 1000+ files and none of them are there, it can take ~30 seconds to get through them all.

Help / Re: When Someone joins server, Events WILL NOT WORK.

If you find out what add-on was causing the problem, be sure to post what it was so we can solve the problem for everyone else too.

You're right I caused it, that's why everyone is having this problem and even in my server events don't work.  Oh wait, no one is having this problem except you and my server works fine.  Maybe get your head out of your ass and realize that maybe one of the 5000 handicapped add-ons you have installed breaks the game.  Client side add-ons run if you have in your Blockland folder at all, you can't disable them.

I'd start by deleting everything that starts with "client_", "server_" or "system_"

Aha!  It might be my lack of space? I have a critically low amount of space.. :/
I'm gonna remove some stuff.

Did that end up being the problem or was it something else?

Help / Re: Start up problem.

I tried to open blockland today, and once it loaded the screen froze.
After a while of waiting I looked at the console box which said the following:
"Got Bad connected receive event"
This happened every time I tried again.

You must have the latest version of Blockland to play online.  You are using v17.  The current version is v19.

Help / Re: Crash when someone connects.
« on: November 02, 2010, 10:40:09 PM »
This is v18/v19's fault. When a player connects, the server goes through every add-on you have enabled, and generates a file manifest and sends it to the player so that they can download it. If you have a few add-ons enabled, you almost don't notice it. If you have many add-ons enabled, you freeze for a bit. If you have very many add-ons enabled, you almost crash. A way to see this is that when people join, the last thing shown in console before the freeze is "Generating file manifest".

When people join, just wait until the game finished generating file manifest, or disable some add-ons when starting a server.

The file manifest is only regenerated when it is possible that the number of art files the server is using could have changed.
Events that will cause the manifest to be regenerated are:
  • Creating a datablock
  • Deleting a datablock
  • Changing maps

Once the file manifest is regenerated, it will not have to be regenerated again until one of those events occurs.

If you have an add-on that is constantly creating new datablocks, then yes, the manifest will have to be regenerated whenever someone connects because those new datablocks could reference new art files that the connecting user needs.  You should not be creating datablocks during gameplay.

Regenerating the file manifest consists of these operations
  • Iterate over all datablocks and add relevant art files to manifest
  • Iterate over mission group to find skybox, terrain, and interior files, add relevant art files to manifest
  • Add all print textures to manifest
  • Iterate over all files in the manifest and compare their file modified time with the time stored in the cache database.  If the file has been modified since the last time it was stored in the database, then the file must be read, hashed and re-stored in the database.

This means that if none of your files have changed, regenerating the file manifest should only take a few seconds because most files are not read, only their modified time is checked.  The first time you start a server, it may take longer than normal as none of the files are in the cache database yet, but it still won't take 5 minutes unless your hard disk is ruinously fragmented.

If your server freezes for more than a few seconds then there is something else wrong.

Blockland needs to have write permission to the Blockland folder.  If you have some security software or user permissions policy enabled that prevents Blockland from writing to disk then Blockland will not work.

Tbh, I preferred the old download system...oh well...
It seems that for every server I join, there are many hundreds of blobs to download.
There were hundreds of things to download before, it just didn't tell you how many there were and it took hours to download them instead of seconds.  Please try to be less stupid.
