But whats the problem again
  • Pay $20 for Blockland
  • Install
  • Join random server
  • Wait 20 hours while bullstuff downloads
  • Email Badspot and complain
and the cache file?
Magic.

WOAH. So, you mean you are gonna make it so you don't have to download? This is ''the next big thing''.

No... what.  You still have to download.  Downloading is how files get from other computers onto your computer.  Now there is just a way to download them quickly and they are stored in a cache file instead of being crapped into your add-ons folder.

Dont remind me X_X
wish I could help but I dont have the space to download everything.
So badspot once this is done should we delete the extra folders in the addons folder?

When v18 runs for the first time it will automatically cache everything that you have in your add-ons folder which will save you some downloading but after that you can actually delete your entire add-ons folder and still connect to servers.

To clarify, this update allows clients who are connecting to a server to download needed art files from a central website.  It also eliminates duplicate file downloads and file version conflicts.

The primary issue that this is addressing is that new users are forced to spend hours downloading common add-ons when they first start playing.  The server side of installing and loading add-ons is unchanged.  It is not an add-on manager.

Right now the only way files get onto the website is by me running a script to upload them.  This is not completely sustainable in the long run but it gets the system off the ground and allows me to ship the update sooner and help out those poor new users who are stuck downloading crap for 10 hours.

The speedometer attempted to measure your speed by iterating over all game objects 10 times per second.  It is possible for there to be over 256,000 game objects.  This does not work.

These things are failed for good reasons.  Please don't act like I'm doing it for some petty fanboyism.

Is your time worthless?  Do you OCD?  Do you want to help out with Blockland v18?  Now is your opportunity!

Here's the deal:  v18 features a high speed file download system.  To facilitate this system I need every add-on that exists.

I need some volunteers to:
  • Download all files from the add-ons board
  • Put them all into a single archive
  • Send me a PM when your archive is ready
  • Upload the archive via FTP to the address I give you.

There are 3 relevant sections of the add-ons board:
  • Add-Ons
  • Maps - done by blitz9100
  • Music - done

I already have all RTB files so it is not necessary to do that section.  Each section can be done by a different person but I don't need 100 people to do this half way.  I need one person to do each section completely.

Only attempt this if you have the bandwidth and time to download, archive and upload 1GB+.  If you can do this, pick a section and reply.

Unfortunately due to an oversight in the way the save system works, keys did not get saved.  Also some of the checkpoint stuff doesn't work without some v18 changes but v18 is no longer network compatible so it's kind of not working right now.

No need to advertise your stuffty RTB ripoff, I think we know what happened kthnxbye

Pretty sure RTB does not have this sort of graph.  Let's keep the flaming for when it's deserved.

No, it's caused by high CPU usage for some reason.
And this happened once before, in which it crashed once and was fine from then on.

I don't know what the problem is but it's not CPU usage.  The server has like 8 cores and I've never seen it go over 10% usage.  Most freezing on the forum is related to sql usage and the general crappiness of smf.

There are a large number of connections open on the server but I don't know what the normal numbers are like.

I randomly poked some numbers in the apache config and now it's working but that could easily be a coincidence considering it's been up and down all day.

Creativity / Comic - Checking Out
« on: October 16, 2010, 12:37:28 AM »

I don't know how widespread this is, but the grocery stores around here implement this sort of predatory donation tactic where they ask you to give your change to some charity. They do this even if you are paying by credit card and the "change" is just an arbitrary number rather than a set of physical objects that would inconvenience you.

You must either lose money or have a -1 social interaction with a person. This is the same tactic that bums use except bums are usually filthy cretins that can easily be brushed off as non-human. Grocery store clerks are usually normal people that will trigger the socialization cues in your mammalian neocortex.

Luckily my social interaction score has bottomed out so I am indifferent to further penalty. The girls demonstrate a different coping mechanism in this week's comic.

Could you make the item color reflect the color of the brick?

Individually colorable items and mounted images would complicate the entire inventory system and require networking changes.  It's not worth the hassle.

Help / Re: "Offline Mode"?

If your key is invalid for any reason it will say "Invalid key"

"Offline mode" is exactly what it says.  Blockland is not connected to the internet.  Probably due to firewall settings.

Do you all see how clever these messages are?  They mean exactly what they say.
