I've heard that this is a bad thing to do
It is. Don't vacuum your PC. The static can fry your components. Use canned air instead.
Do your CPU and GPU heatsinks work properly? Try to check the temperatures with hardware monitor and see if you find anything suspicious.

You know you can be satisfied with your terrain when Conan gives responses like that.

I personally don't mind the trees. They get the job done while keeping the brickcount low.

Clan Discussion / Re: Brick Masters Clan
« on: April 28, 2013, 03:14:57 PM »
Hello, we are the Brick Masters (a clan I just started) and if your looking for a clan to join, then you have come to the right place, but first please match the criteria: you must be dedicated and loyal, those who are not will be banned (just to let you know) and you also have to be nice with fellow members and come to most meetings also please use our clan tag when you join (bric mast), if you think you match the criteria then please answer the following questions: what is your bl id, username, and are you good at TDMs? (for handling rival clans).
That has to be the longest sentence I've ever seen.

You need more layout for the clan page, otherwise noone will join you.

I heard from Sylvanor that a co-op build was acceptable as an app. anyway,

my new app is really starting to roll...reached the 2k mark, but it's the simple basics I'm working out. I'll bring you pictures and updates as I go.

But at the same time, there's the doubt of whether or not I know what im doing in this new style.

In case there are better ideas than the one I'm making (which I'm nearly certain there is),

Anyone want to suggest something?
We can't really judge your build and style unless you give us any pictures. Your previous picture doesn't really show much except a bit of terrain... It is hard to recommend you something to build, because it hugely depends on what styles you feel comfortable with. Build whatever you think suits you best.

After playing around with King Leo's rewrite, I came up with some interesting ideas:

  • Repeats - ||: and :||# border the area you want repeated with # being the number of times to repeat the section. Would actually make repeated parts more noticeable and cuts down on the filesize/string length as a small bonus.
  • Ignored characters in files - Find some way to make it skip past newline characters (the places where you pressed return) so we can have more readable files (e.g. one bar per line, empty lines between sections of a piece, etc.) as well as have // represent comments which ignore the rest of the line until a newline character is reached. (i.e. when // shows up, set an ignore flag until a newline character is reached, then unset it.)
  • Turn this into named brick relay sequencer? - Have everything before "special characters" in a word define the name of the brick, then find that brick and fire a relay on it. "Special characters" of course include / , * ||: :|| and whatever else gets added. This way we could make relayed sequences much more easily for things like player pianos, light shows, pyrotechnics displays, or even timed cutscenes and scenarios!

What do you think of these ideas? Would they be helpful? How easily could they be implemented?

Hmm. Those are some nice ideas. I don't know if all of this is possible, though.
Skipping newline characters can be avoided by making the program read the file line after line. The problem with that is that all the lines will play simultaneously, and only as long as the shortest line plays (or something like that, it was really weird). I could look into that again.

Repeats would require a complete processing of the string before it is actually played. Right now each new word is being treated as a note (or the lack of one), and the words are played in succession. That would obviously not work with ||: and :||, as there is no way to go back to the first ||: and play it again.
One solution would be to have the function recognize the symbol and skip to the next :||, saving everything in between as a string and passing it recursively to itself X times (typically 2 for a double repeat). That sounds like quite of a challenge, especially if ||: and :|| are on two different lines.

A brick relay sequencer you say? Do you mean that I have a brick called "AS5" that includes the event "onRelay -> Self -> playSound [pianoAS5]", and so on and so forth for every note? That would of course defeat the purpose of a easy-to-set-up-piano event, as the user would have to build and event the piano by himself. And going through relays isn't quite as effective as playing the sound directly. All in all, this reminds me very much of this and this, which I built a while ago. The only thing that would be different is the calling sequence, which is done with relayed bricks right now.
On the other hand, this would allow for some cool new things. It gives you more freedom in choosing the right soundpack. That would allow for a multi-instrument orchestra, for example. Another possibility would be (as you said) to use this for light shows and pyrotechnics.
I feel like this should be a variation of the current version, as the functionality is quite different from what we have right now. The good thing is that this is probably very easy to implement.

What do you think?

this

Ihn did you think co-operating an app was acceptable? :o
I kinda gave him that idea. He asked me whether it was okay or not, and I answered I assumed it would be okay if both people apped with a collab build. But I also said that I highly suggested to build an individual app, and that he had to hear with you guys first.

yes yes you're a real saint

there's nothing wrong with banning people. i don't know why you guys don't do it more often, especially if you flat-out don't want that kind of person on your server
Kick. Problem solved. 95% of them won't come back.

So if I learn Python, what could I do with it?

I know I should research this myself but you said you have experience with it so..
Well, you can do the same things as with any other languages. In that aspect, it doesn't really matter what language you choose. You will most likely start of with using it as a calculator, then you'll probably dive into a couple of simple for- and while- loops. Eventually you'll probably do some string manipulations. The basic stuff is the same in all languages. The syntax isn't though. And that's why Python is often recommended for newbies, because its syntax is easy to understand. Another pro is the availability of documentation. If you are wondering how to solve a certain problem, the answer is often only a short Google-search away. There is most likely someone who has encountered the same problem as you with big languages such as Python and C. If you decide to start with TorqueScript or another small language, you have to do much of the problem solving yourself.

Personally, I use Python (and MATLAB) for scientific purposes. Modelling dynamic chemical systems, for example. Those models often involve numerical solving of quite complex differential equations, which are very time consuming (or even impossible) to solve by hand.
But unless you are pursuing a career in mathematics or engineering, you probably won't need to learn that kind of programming :P

Here's a list of applications: http://www.python.org/about/apps/ , http://python.about.com/od/gettingstarted/ss/whatispython_all.htm , http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Python_(programming_language)#Use

According to wiki, Civilization 4 and Battlefield 2 use Python. So that's cool.

not that many really, it just accumulates people over time and i never bother to clear it except on holidays or when people ask me if they can be unbanned
I've only banned 3 people in my 2.5 years of playing Blockland. Okay, I might not be hosting very often. But even if I would, I doubt my banlist would exceed 20 entries a year.

I like those buildings. I think the art deco style would fit well in Blockland. That triangular building is well executed, even though those kind of shapes always look a little weird in Blockland. Arghh... we should have free rotation around all 3 axes, instead of being limited by a stupid grid. Imagine all the possibilities!!

I'm glad caffeine doesn't prevent me from sleeping :)
That sucks. Kinda. That's like the only reason why I would choose to drink a beverage with coffeine in the first place.

Red bull, Monster, alcohol, coffee...

it's all gross to me

and unhealthy
Good boy! Stay that way.

Only if you have a ridiculous amount of it.
The LD50 of caffeine is estimated to be about 170 mg/kg. So an average adult male would have to drink about 80-90 cans of Monster to die from it.
By the way: your liver and kidney would probably collapse from the excessive fluid consumption after only 20-30 cans.

STOP LIKING WHAT I DONT LIKE!
Swaggots, as theyre called in the us, ARE annoying, but the drink has nothing to do with it.
But the drink amplifies their behavior. And for some reason, these "swaggots" is what I associate with energy drinks.

And I don't like the general concept of them either. They're false advertising. They don't contain "energy", so why would you call them that? Coffee contains 10 times as much coffeine as these drinks. The amounts of taurine and other "miracle herbs" are minuscule. All they contain is sugar, lots of it. Basically, you would get the same kick from a can of Coke or Mountain Dew.
