About 15 seconds. Though it is largely dependent on how many add-ons I have installed. Vanilla loads in 4 seconds. Computer is brand new and has quite good specs.

Modification Help / Re: File I/O - abusable?
« on: April 15, 2013, 11:38:04 AM »
The user cannot access files both abovee the blockland directory, nor those dieectly in it. It must be in a subdirectory if the blockland directory to be accessable. For example -
Key.dat - no
Blockland.exe - no
C:/some/stupid/thing.txt - no
Blockland/config/server/server.cs - yes

Assuming the files are only open for read and are never written, you'll be fine.
Assuming the files are open for write at some point and they are never exec()'d, you'll be fine.

The only flaw i can think of is that the client could theoretically reconstruct files on their end by observing the sounds that are played, but that would be both highly sophisticated and awesome.

I woukd suggest creating a "music" directory and forcing the clients to stay in there so they don't hear the synth for super secret code files.

Ahh! I see.
I'm not too afraid about reconstruction of files, so that doesn't concern me.

The only thing you should worry about is if you let users write files. Make sure to isolate where they can write to a separate folder and make a size usage limit per BL_ID.
Of course. I haven't made the write part yet, but I keep that in mind.
On a related note: why isn't there support for reg.ex. in TS? That would've made my life so much easier. String search and replace isn't the best with the default functions. Not enough wildcards!

What makes you so sure that we won't be able to? If associated with religions, does your religion not believe that we are able to accomplish it?
NASA has been working on a new project to send a Men to the Moon, and even Mars. It will be decades before it will be operational but it's more than possible to settle on a different planet. That's the difference is unless we fly to the Earth alike planet lightyears away, and say settle on Mars, the only life supply would be transport ships sending supplies to and from Mars, or the moon, or wherever we'd land.
If I would've had a religion, I'm pretty sure one could argue that leaving earth is a sin. God created the earth for us, so when we seek to leave earth, aren't we then leaving behind God as well?

I was trying to say that extraterrestrial human settlements are very, very unlikely to happen. Even though we can send men to the Moon, maybe even to Mars, we aren't able to build lifesupporting colonies there. And going beyond our solar system? Forget about it. The technological challenges are way too large. Not to mention that the journey itself would take hundreds or thousands of generations.

Let's face it: humanity is bound to earth. We only have a relatively "short" time left, and there's no way we're going to settle on a different planet during that time. Therefore, we should spend our time and ressources to live as sustainable as possible.

Modification Help / File I/O - abusable?
« on: April 15, 2013, 11:00:12 AM »
I'm working on my first script ( a modification of this ) and I need to store large amounts of information (let's say a 1000 char string). I don't know how to do that with ordinary brick events, as the char limit is around 200. However, I've found that using file I/O is very easy and convenient. The user enters the directory of the file they want to access, and the script then converts the file into a series of notes that are played in Blockland. Quite easy stuff, in other words.

But I'm wondering if giving access to my computer like that is abusable somehow. Can the user hack his way into my computer by sending some stuff along with the packets that request access to my file?
The code looks like this:
Code: [Select]
function fxDtsBrick::pianoSynthRFF(%brick,%nameOfFile,%delay,%client)
{
//blabla
%brick.noteCount = 0;
%brick.isPlaying = 1;

%file = new fileObject();
%file.openForRead(%nameOfFile);
playSynth(%brick,%file.readLine(),%delay);
%file.close();
%file.delete();
}
Is this method safe? Or do you suggest anything else?

Space exploration is really what we should be using money on. It's cool.
Seeing that humanity probably never will be able to travel to space and settle on a different planet, it would be much smarter to spend that money on medicine and renewable energy.

The scientific method is the furthest thing from guess work you can imagine, and science has made many steps to improve your life.
There's a good deal of guessing involved in science as well, trust me (I do guessing on a daily basis :D). Scientists are just better at guessing than most other people. And about 90% of all inventions were either mistakes or complete coincidences.

And I don't get why people always argument as if science and religion are two complete opposites. Being religious does not mean that you completely deny science. Believing in Darwins theory of evolution does not necessarily exclude the existance of a deity.

I've talked to Sylvanor about the 50k rule, and we pretty much agreed that it needs a bit of adjustment. We need Slevens opinion before we set a number, though. So for you guys who are building apps right now: if you are happy with your build, but the brickcount only says 21k, please don't add 29k worth of crap. Submit it as it is. Sometimes, less is better.
Especially I am a fan of brickcount conservation, since I've been playing on a crappy computer for quite a while now. My golden rule is that if you could build the same thing with less bricks, without loss of detail, then you should.

About being active during the summer: I have absolutely no idea. Apparently I'll be working abroad (Czech Republic, to be exact), and I have no idea what to expect. But I won't have access to my gaming pc, only my crappy laptop. I guess the good thing is that the laptop can't run all the games I've been into lately, so there's more time for Blockland :P

A lot of science has been proven, none of religion has been proven. Like I said, religion was created to explain the unexplainable. Our brains do this naturally. Our brains make sense of things that we don't understand. For example, you probably can think of an event that happened to you when you were a small child. Most of the details that you think are true are completely false. This is because over time your brain has lost information about the event, so when you recall the event, your brain has to fill in the parts that have been lost so the event makes sense to you. The fill-ins are almost never correct.

Religion is a fill-in.
You can't "prove" religion like you can prove science. And to take that discussion right away: you can't even prove science. There is no such thing as scientific truth. There are only theories that haven't been falsified yet. When a theory is falsified, we have to use a new one. (see philosophers like Popper and Kuhn for more on this)

You're saying that religion is a fill in. I like to think of religion like that as well. It is a necessary fill in. There are millions of things that humanity doesn't know yet, or simply doesn't have brain capacity to understand. Let's take a few examples: what happend before the Big Bang? Time and space was created in the Big Bang, but how can one imagine a universe without time and space? If time and space didn't exist before the Big Bang, what exactly caused it to "bang"? And where did it bang from? An explosion can't take place without a medium (space), so how the hell did (and still does) the universe expand?

Just thinking about that kind of stuff makes your brain melt. It is much more convenient to have a "God" to take over where scientific theories start to fail. And untill science can give us some more information, why can't we just say that "God" caused the Big Bang?
I'm not saying God is this old dude with a white beard with a son called Jesus, and who created the universe, the earth, Adam and Eve in 6 days. God should rather be a fill in where science doesn't work.

In response to Anti-Block's application:

My impression of the build as a whole is that it isn't finished yet. The first thing that strikes me is that you only have terrain on one side of the castle and the courtyard looks way too empty. On further inspection, the corners of the wall caught my attention. They aren't properly aligned with the rest of the wall, they are shifted up or down by a plate. I don't know if that is intentionally, but it looks weird. They also don't have nice supports like the rest of the wall, which makes the whole structure look very weak. It also seems like you forgot to build the inner part of the roof. In other words: fix those corners!!
Another thing that bothers me is that you seemed to have gone lazy and duplicated the walls, as 3 out of 4 walls are identical. They look like placeholders, but not like a final product. Replace the walls by something else, and it will look much better. For example, you could put a small monastry / temple on the east end, while the west end is expanded to include a nice little japanese garden. That way, you'll get some more variation and asymmetry into your build. Some more suggestions include a small pond on the outside, including a small gazebo. And for added contrast, how would things look with a wooden floor instead of the boring red in the surrounding walls? As you see, the possibilities for expansion are endless!

Now that I've scared you with all the critique, let me say some nice things about the build as well. First of: you're technique is good! Especially that gate is very beautiful. It shows that you've understood the essence of traditional japanese architecture, and you manage to put it into bricks as well. The curvature of the roofs is well executed! You also seem to know a bit or two about terrain building, which is nice.

In conclusion: this is a very good build, but it is not quite finished yet. It has a lot of potential, and it could easily become one of the best builds of its kind if done right. That would require a lot more work though. You're definately on the right path, but we need more of it. Not because of the 50k brick rule (which I don't see a necessity), but because the build needs more variation and a bit of polishing.

As of now, I give it a 6/10

In response to I-have-not's application:

The build as a whole looks good. It looks like all parts belong together (with the possible exception of the castle, it looks kinda out of place)

The castle looks fine, though it is a bit too symmetric. The marble castle looks weird, but as it is still under construction, I'll ignore it for now. The trees are well built, but I'd like to see even more vegetation. That's just my personal preference, though. The mountain is excellently executed. But the transition into the beach looks weird. It is way too abrupt. The beach itself is also quite short. I'd like to see some more pictures of the mine. I feel that with a mountain like that, you have very much space to experiment with inside it. How about a secret pirate hideout? The possibilities are endless! (almost). I would also like to play on the map. As this is meant to be a treasure hunt, I feel that the gameplay should be taken into account when judging the build. Even though the build itself has some (minor) aestetic issues, the treasure hunt could make up for it if it is good enough.

I see you used default bricks only, which is a big plus. The brickcount rule isn't mentioned in the Application information in the OP, so I won't substract any points for that. Though I'd like to see what you would've come up with if you would've used 5 times as many bricks. It would probably have been good :)

Final verdict before play-through: 6.5/10.

I hold back 1 point since I haven't played on it yet. Can you please provide us with a save?

Any updates King Leo?
The updates are that I've been playing a bit too much BF3 lately :P
I take a look at it now.

Oh good. Now I can make good church windows.
That seems as a very bad idea. These bricks are very resource hungry. Just use normal bricks instead.

Did your patients pass the test?
Also, I think it is a bad idea to use people in need of medical treatment for construction!

I used the vacuum cleaner. It is very clean, but the computer won't start for some reason :S

No seriously. NEVER use a vacuum cleaner to clean the inside of your computer. If you do so, you'll most likely end up frying your components with static electricity.

Some sort of rating system to seperate the bad from the good tutorials would also be nice.
