Gonna add onto what he said, also to be blunt
When you're doing commissions, you also need to bear in mind that you're only doing the drawing. Meaning that you're not doing much, if any, brainstorming or planning. Meaning that you have next to no idea about what your buyers will want. He could be asking for a gryphon, sure, but he could also ask for a wolf, dinosaur, human, robot, airplane, spaceship, coffee table, anything.
You have to be ready to draw anything known and unknown to mankind, so studying basically everything about drawing forms and figures is a must, from colour theory to how the shine on a pool ball differs to that of a metal plate to anatomy of feral horses. To be completely honest all I've seen you draw is gryphons and perhaps a wolf every now and then.
Of course, you can always impose limitations (many artists that I know who do commissions will refuse to draw buildings or robots simply because they don't feel up to par), but then again
The furry community is so saturated with artistsand they might look for others who have a more broad range of abilities.
