Off Topic / help fred with something
« on: May 19, 2011, 07:41:56 PM »
so i have this project due tomorrow. we have to make a magazine. my magazine is called "travel". so i want a list of 5 places that would be cool places to go, preferrably not tourist destinations. there needs to be enough info about them to fill a page (which really means part of a page, since i can do pictures). the teacher is pretty easy going lol.

there are some other requirements but i dont have the assignment with me so ill do them tomorrow in class, the 5 articles are the biggest part.

Games / Planet Calypso
« on: May 18, 2011, 12:32:29 AM »

Quote
You are invited into the future to join an open-ended social, economic and political action-adventure as a human colonist on a distant alien planet. Explore over 1500 square kilometers, developing more than 200 unique skills, as you follow you own unique story with others from around the world.
You will enter a new chapter in Calypso’s story. After an exhausting five year conflict with an invading robot enemy, the long awaited promise of peace and prosperity on Calypso remains elusive. With the robots mostly repelled to their home world Akbal-Cimi, cracks in colonist solidarity are emerging.

The war-time economy has produced industrialists with the resources to buy up Calypso’s precious land, while disgruntled ex-soldiers are left to wander Calypso, hunting and mining for their survival.

Have you got what it takes to stake a claim on Calypso?

More info:

-Free to play, kind of
-The PED currency used on Calypso has a fixed exchange rate of 10:1 with the US dollar allowing you to deposit and withdraw real money during your adventures on Calypso.
-Runs on CryEngine2. If you turn the settings all down low it's still really easy to run though.
-Three broad professions are hunter, crafter, and miner. There's tons of other skills though.
-I have never seen a game with a map this big. It's huuge. There's even two space stations orbiting the planet that you can visit.
-Kinda boring video, oh well. video plus the full review.
-Unofficial but apparently popular wiki. There is no official wiki.
-Official guides.

It's kinda hard to find info on this game. It is free to play, but to get a start you'll probably want to deposit $10-20 USD. The alternative is basically using a special gun thing to extract sweat from animals. 1,000 sweat (which takes a long time to get!) sells for 2-3 PED, 5 if you're lucky. So basically, 50 cents for alot of tedious work if you're lucky. I think quite a few people make monthly deposits, similar to subscription fees of other games. I don't think most people actually profit from playing, though it is possible.

I will update the OP with more stuff when I'm not tired and supposed to be doing homework. Anyone want to start a blockland "society" (clan, basically)? :D

Games / Some Battlefield stuff on sale on steam
« on: May 08, 2011, 01:41:07 PM »
BFBC2 is $6.80, BFBC2 Vietnam is $7.49, BF2 is $5.00, plus the new Medal of Honor for $15.00 and Medal of Honor Airborne for $2.50.

I think I'll get BC2 and Airborne because its so cheap, but is it worth it to buy Vietnam?

Creativity / A photograph I entered into a show...
« on: April 24, 2011, 09:49:32 PM »
...and got in. No awards, but it was my first show so I didn't expect any.

it looks better when it's printed out at full res/larger size. the detail in the wall is pretty amazing. the final print was a bit more saturated, too.

(i resized this when i uploaded to imageshack. and before someone starts complaining, JPEGs are used for photography. i actually use .tiff's because they're higher quality but the file size was too big to upload. 60mb, lol)

Off Topic / scheduled defrags/virus scans
« on: April 11, 2011, 04:02:47 PM »
right, so i've been a maccigarette all my life

but I'm currently working on getting my own PC up and running. I have it scheduled to defrag at like 1 or 2 AM, and I have Microsoft Security Essentials scheduled to scan for viruses at like 3 AM. Neither of them ever do it, though. MSE says there haven't been any scans done, and defrag utility thing says the last defrag was one I did manually. ):

(yes, I do leave the computer on. i sleep it.)

Off Topic / Fred's New Ghetto-Rig
« on: April 03, 2011, 12:14:31 AM »
Got it today :P

Dell OptiPlex GX620 (Yes I know it sucks, you don't need to tell me :P )

Specs:
Pentium 4 HT 3.4Ghz (1 physical core, 2 "logical" cores)
2Gb of RAM
bla bla bla. thats the most important stuff.

The tower was $100, keyboard/mouse was $15, monitor was $5. Total $120 :D

Planned upgrades:
Well I already installed Windows 7 Ultimate 64-bit, runs great.
I REALLY need a wireless adapter card so I can connect to the internet. (Gonna pick one up after I get my tax return this week/get my paycheck this week)
Radeon HD 4670 to run some games.
2 more gigs of RAM.
A 1Tb hard drive.
A lot of the things I upgrade it with (HDD, wireless adapter, things like that) I'll use when I finally build my real computer.

Since I can't connect to the internet, I can't update my drivers. So I have no audio or video stuffs. Blockland won't even launch :P

Off Topic / I just got a Dell GX620 on ebay
« on: March 28, 2011, 06:04:59 PM »
For $100, free shipping. Lolol. I'm going to practice working on hardware and stuff with it. Might buy a cheap gpu and play minecraft or something. I'll probably buy a 1tb HDD to use, and when I buy my real computer I'll transfer it over. Maybe do the same with some other parts.

Specs:
Intel Pentium 4 @ 3 Ghz
2GB RAM
80GB HDD (lol)
Windows XP SP3

Discuss what I should do to this computer.

Off Topic / 1- Build computer. 2- Sell for money.
« on: March 10, 2011, 08:12:27 PM »
Should I do this? Build inexpensive computers, then sell them to grannies that need a web browsing/email/word processing machine at a little bit of a markup? I'd sell locally, I wouldn't ship them or anything. There's a website that basically everyone in my state looks at when they want to buy something lol. If people think the general idea is good maybe I'll bother to type up more specific details.
