Off Topic / Google Chrome + Steam = wtf
« on: March 06, 2011, 03:13:30 PM »
1. Add chrome as a non-steam game
2. Launch chrome through steam, and go to a youtube video
3. Open steam overlay
4. ??? (overlay opens just on the video, not your whole screen wtf)
5. Profit
6. Notice your keyboard isn't working, remove chrome from steam games, launch it normally :)

General Discussion / Fred's 16x16 Contest Results
« on: February 28, 2011, 09:56:52 PM »
I recently ran a contest on my server. Short version of the rules: build anything you want in a 16x16 area. I was pretty satisfied with the number of entrants, and some of the builds were really damn good. I had a hard time deciding what should win. Just now I have decided:

1st Place: StarHawk, ID 3623. "Stalker II Class Attack Walker".

2nd Place: Bacterium, ID 12458. "Greek Architecture".

My reasoning for putting Bacterium's in second place: Yes, it's amazing. It just feels really... cramped. You can't really appreciate it all because when you walk inside of it you feel like a giant in a midget's house. Now don't get me wrong, I love it. And if he enters a similar build into one of my next contests that has a large size limit (say 32x32) I think it will be a definite contender for first place. The main challenge of this contest was the size limitation, though, and I thought StarHawk's seemed more natural.

StarHawk will receive a $10 steam game of his choice. If my hours hadn't recently been cut at work (again) I'd probably give Bacterium and maybe one or two other people runner-up prizes, it was really really hard to decide on a winner. I will be hosting more contests like this, on a larger scale. Bigger builds and bigger prizes. This one was just to see if a contest on BL could be successful.

Also, please stop by my server and take a look at the builds. There are some wonderful ones, including Rusty's, Cheezey's, Banjo-kazooie's, and a few others. And watch out for another topic in the future announcing my next contest. Same as this time, the prize will be a steam game. Probably one that's more valuable than $10 ;)

Off Topic / parents.
« on: February 22, 2011, 12:00:32 AM »
dear oh-so-helpful BL forums,

in about 1 year and 3 months I can move out of the house. unfortunately, my parents have tightened their "religious grip" over me (ever since they found out my older bro and sis don't go anymore) and basically force me to go to church every week and read scriptures with them every night. whether you like religion or not I shouldn't have to pretend I believe this stuff (I'm not even going to say whether or not religion in general is bad, all you need to know is this one doesn't work for me) just because my parents don't want me to make my own decisions. should I confront them about this or should I just buckle up and endure it until I can move out?

sincerely
fred

p.s. the reason I'm asking an internet forum is because it's easier to "talk" to people I don't and never will really know.

Off Topic / Fred's New PC
« on: February 19, 2011, 04:03:10 PM »
So I'm going to buy parts for a new PC soon. I've tentatively (as in, by the time I have the money this probably won't be what I've decided on lol) decided on these parts.

AMD Phenom II X6 Black Edition Processor
Cooler Master Hyper 212+ CPU Cooler (I'm going to overclock a little so I got this to be safe)
MSI 890FXA-GD70 Motherboard
G.SKILL Ripjaw Series 2x4GB DDR3 RAM
Radeon 6870 Graphics Card (Not sure about this but it looks good for the price)
Western Digital Caviar Green 1TB (The difference in price between a 1TB and something like a 500GB is so small there's no reason not to get 1TB)
USB Add-on Card (Hey, it's $10 and USB is cool, why not)
Corsair 600T Case
Corsair AX850 850W Power Supply (I don't need 850W now, but eventually I might and this way I won't need to buy a new PSU)

Now I think all of this together is like $1154, which I'm very happy with, but I'm being stopid and want to spend too much on the monitor:
Acer 32" Monitor. It's not the highest quality, but it's 32". Oh my god that would be great. Unfortunately it's more than I'd like to spend on a monitor...

As for keyboard: Logitech K800 Wireless Slim is what I've settled on. Mouse I'm not really sure, but for now I've chosen Logitech M305 Wireless.

On NewEgg I'll get $45 off in mail-in rebates.

I'm going to be doing a lot of work in Photoshop and similar programs, so the six-core processor will help there (Photoshop can take advantage of lots of cores, unless I have been misinformed). 8GB of RAM might not be totally necessary but it's not super expensive so what the hell. If anyone knows of any monitors I might like that are cheaper than $350 then please, PLEASE tell me lol. I don't want to spend that much on a monitor but 32" would be amazing to use. I'll probably watch movies and things from across the room so that'd be nice. Also if anyone can suggest a nice wireless mouse, preferably Logitech so I can use 1 USB dongle for keyboard and mouse.

Ways I might try and save money:
Buy a smaller PSU, I don't need 850W and who knows who long it'll be before I do (though it's worth saying the corsair case/psu are a combo deal, you get $30 off so I'm already saving a little)
Buy a cheaper monitor
Buy a cheaper keyboard/mouse
Buy the motherboard open box
Those 4 ways could potentially save me quite a bit of money. What do you guys think?

Off Topic / Windows 7 Home Premium vs. Professional vs. Ultimate
« on: February 18, 2011, 10:39:34 AM »
So I'm slowly building up money and choosing parts for a new system (it's looking good so far, I'll probably make a new thread in a week or so about the parts). As far as the OS goes, though, I'm not sure which to pick. Honestly Ultimate doesn't look like it has anything that special, same with Professional. What do you guys think?

Off Topic / Learning computer stuffff
« on: February 12, 2011, 11:56:29 AM »
So I want to build a computer, but I don't really have, uh, any experience with computer internals. I've watched quite a few videos on how to build a computer and I'm confident I could do it, but would it be a good idea to pick up some really old computer for cheap somewhere and disassemble/re-assemble it a few times to get comfortable? I don't have all the money I need to build one yet anyway, I'm going to wait til I have $1100-$1200 probably.

General Discussion / What is your (realistic) dream server?
« on: February 06, 2011, 09:57:07 PM »
What kind of server have you been waiting for for years (or whatever...), but hasn't ever happened? A cityRP that is tweaked to your liking? A TDM with all your favorite features? I have a 24/7 server, and if what I have planned for it doesn't work out, I want new ideas :P (preferably not cityRP though lol, I don't want to compete with Diggy's/Skill's and Surb's)

Modification Help / Fred's Basic Questions
« on: February 02, 2011, 03:24:50 PM »
I've recently tried to start scripting stuff again, and I've got some very basic questions. All the questions I've tried to answer myself by searching forums/looking at scripts etc. but I just want to make sure I'm doing it right, or I still have no idea.

1. What's the "generic" form of messageclient? and messageall?
2. What's the findclientbyname and findclientbyID stuff, exactly? I know what it's used for, just maybe not exactly how to use/type it etc

Will edit this post as I figure stuff out/get more questions c:

General Discussion / RP Idea
« on: January 31, 2011, 01:08:22 PM »
So I'm working on getting an RP going, this is my first draft of the concept. What do you guys think? There's a PNG version that looks nice but will probably stretch your screen to hell, and a RTF format that works alright. Note: It is a very rough idea right now.

General Discussion / The State of Blockland

I used to play blockland, quite a while ago (BLID: 1479). I hop on every once in a while but haven't seriously played. What's going on these days? Popular server types? Add-ons? Maps?
