A lot of people think that a shotgun is magically a close-range only weapon, and only effective at about 5 feet. Wrong wrong wrong WRONG. Movies and stuff also COMPLETELY ignore the fact that MOST, if not all hunting shotguns/Civilian shotguns are RIFLED and fire SLUGS, not SHOT. CAPS.
A shotgun using shot (bird or buckshot) is still lethal for quite a ways (otherwise how the forget would you shoot birds with it), and keep in mind that it's a long-barreled gun, it really isn't a CQC weapon. Even "militarized" shotguns don't behave in this manner. You MIGHT be able to achieve that effect if you cut down the barrel on a break-action shotgun, but it'd have to be so short the goddamn thing would break off your hand, and that leads us to #2:
