I recall Kompressor as being the one who was behind most of the substantive work with shaders/v21. He didn't post here much that I can recall but he's always seemed nice.

Someone--I don't know who--brought up this whole subject in a post I saw during one of my earlier sporadic logins to this forum, and I haven't really been able to get it out of my head since. This place was essentially a little self-contained Kiwi Farms (ironically, considering who would wind up hosting that site) with a key difference existing in that the vast majority of people here were literal children.

I wasn't even out of elementary school at the time that I made this account, and it's startling to realize just what I was exposed to through here and how much that has likely affected me. It's very sobering to come back and read stories e.g. Bisjac, Plastiware and realize that the rest of the people involved in that were close to the same age I was.

I think some people might make the argument that Badspot wasn't equipped or prepared to deal with moderating a community of children, but I think that even if that is true that he should have recognized that as the situation and he should have dealt with it accordingly. Simply put, if he wasn't prepared or interested in moderating his forum full of children intermingling with creeps and predators then he should have just closed it down back then.

As for Blockland's success, it is pretty remarkable that he managed to get a head start on Roblox and Minecraft by making a game with the same appeal and a passionate community (despite everything) and then let it go to waste. It even got a second chance when it released on Steam; I recall people here being worried about the game stagnating even before the Steam launch, and then that came and the playerbase briefly exploded basically overnight. And then there were no more substantial updates, and then the playerbase trickled down to nothing, and now we're here.

I don't know, maybe Badspot just wasn't interested, but it does seem like a waste of potential.

I'm like 99% sure it's just going to come back.

It's already back up.

I hope with the number of retrospective topics there are on here other people catch the addiction again. This place has a vibe that isn't anywhere else. It's the only forum left besides Something Awful and Kiwi Farms. Facepunch is gone now right? That's the only other forum I could think of with this vibe.

On a side note: Should I join SA? I never have because I figured I'd be banned right away but now that I'm older and $15 isn't actually that expensive I'm kinda considering it.

There are plenty of other active forums floating around the internet to be honest. Knockout was created to replace Facepunch like someone else mentioned—it's still moderately active.

SA is fine. It's pretty good all things considered and if you just lurk for a bit and abide by the rules and the vibe of the place then you probably won't get banned.

General Discussion / Re: How in the hell are any of you still here?

I've had this place in my search history for the last 10-11 years and bookmarked so that I can occasionally come back to see if it's been shut down yet. I like to read through the chronology whenever I get nostalgic.

The entire period of my life where I played this game and participated in this forum feels like a fugue state occasionally punctuated by stupid lolcow drama. This place was formative to me growing up and I enjoyed my time here (I think?), but I'm not really sure how I'd explain it to anyone who wasn't here.

EDIT: Slightly related but a very similar type of community to this one (dramatic/concerning community, apathetic owner) existed for a Garry's Mod DarkRP server I used to play. One of the more prominent members of that community was a Blockland player. They were the only person I've met in the wild who's played this game.

General Discussion / Re: What makes you stay?

Nostalgia. I haven't played or posted actively for a very long time, but I spent a pretty large portion of my childhood here and I like come back every once in a while to lurk through and to make sure that this place still exists.

« on: July 20, 2020, 02:06:40 AM »
I mean yeah, it's been dead for a while if we're being honest with ourselves. The game hasn't been actively developed since forever, "the community" has largely moved onto Discords both private and public, and even if it was still active there's no real reason to stay here as opposed to any other forum now that the game itself is dead.

This place is over a decade old at this point, and it's had a good run. A lot of cool and interesting stuff has happened over the years, and at this point I just hope that somebody archives this place for when it inevitably comes to an abrupt end when Badspot decides to shut off the servers.
