Off Topic / My parents got a check for ~$3900...
« on: November 14, 2012, 08:26:20 PM »
...from the IRS.
They filed for a bunch of random stuff in 2006 and just now my mom received a notification and then the check itself. My mom and dad are going to split it (separate), and my mom is going to use most of her half to pay for a lawyer's work who represented her in a case to continue a restraining order. My dad needs all the money he can get at the moment and will probably be able to do a lot with it.

Off Topic / (Movie) Sky Captain and the World of Tomorrow
« on: October 16, 2012, 04:29:05 PM »
This movie is an amazing movie. It is hokey and dumb and amazing. It was made long ago in the distant future when there were no colors but sepia.

I just recently watched it again and I thought you guys would get a kick out of it.

Here's the Wikipedia page

The thing about this whole movie is that it has all the right actors and some great ideas, but the whole steampunk thing throws some people off, so be warned if you do plan on watching this for giggles that, in the words of my sister, "every line is a catchphrase." Still, c'mon, underwater airplanes, aviator goggles, abandoned Nepalese mines, a ton of awesome robots, and everything in brilliant shades of sepia.

Creativity / So I started coding something in DarkBASIC
« on: October 13, 2012, 06:45:40 AM »
Yeah, so my computer programming teacher can't read it. What the program does is it displays a 5x5 section of a group of lines of text. You can use the arrow keys to navigate up, down, left, and right, and when you press the keys, they would be displayed on the screen as well. The lower right coordinates are also displayed, but I'm thinking of changing them to those of the center of the view. However, what I think makes this worthwhile is that it doesn't use any sprites, it just uses text commands. This results in it looking rather poor, but at the same time I love it. At the moment I'm thinking that I'll turn it into a simple dungeon run game, but unfortunately I don't know how to do level generation.

Anyway, since it uses normal text file encoding, I just put it into txt, in case any of you guys have DarkBASIC and want to try it out. Later I'll post an exe if that's okay.

Off Topic / A moment of complete peace
« on: September 29, 2012, 09:09:13 PM »
So earlier this evening I got dragged along to a contradance, but when we got there I decided to just stay in the car. I had some music on soundcloud and I kept repeating it; I played shopping cart hero and angry gran. I got tired of that music after a little while and I moved on to listening to The Tree by Klippa. That got me into a really calm mood and eventually I just opened up a game called Naught and listened to the main menu music, put down the iPhone and stared at nothing. In just a couple of minutes, I was more relaxed than I've been so far this year and infinitely patient.
It only lasted for so long, of course, but I'm still feeling absolutely calm.

Anyone had any similar experiences?

Off Topic / Browsing forums on iPhone...
« on: September 05, 2012, 08:53:58 PM »
Minecraft topic views are suddenly a link. I must investigate.

My iPhone read as a phone number. I had already hit call before I saw the options.
Hit home button as phone starts to switch to the phone view. Before I get back, obnoxious music and "your call could not be completed"
:c

Why am I so stupid?

Off Topic / (?) Should I get FL Studio (?)
« on: July 31, 2012, 06:11:48 AM »
I should essplane that I am only making this topic because I'm extremely stingy and I barely buy anything over 20 dollars.
Since the only WORTHWHILE version of FL Studio that I am willing to pay the amount for is $100 and I'm not letting my father pay for any of it since he's poor.
I have a couple of samples of what I've done so far on my soundcloud, but there's sooooo much that I haven't even started to understand. Then there's the matter of people not liking the complexity that I put into parts of my pieces. I don't know how many people like what I do with music. Take http://soundcloud.com/katadeus/the-tablescrap-advances for an example, the kick confused my sister and she thought that the claps were unnecessary and also confusing. I don't know if it's worthwhile if I can't produce something others like.

Nobody is interested in DMs anymore. I find it sad.

Discuss DMs and TDMs and which are better.

Suggestions & Requests / (Mission editor) Smooth Planar
« on: July 09, 2012, 09:41:44 PM »
So while using mission editor and using the smooth tool, it occurred to me that smooth always goes towards flattening horizontally, and that what I want would be something that flattens according to 4 selected points or the edges of a brush area in mission editor.

If this makes sense to anyone, please explain it for everyone else.

Off Topic / Idea: Sound Simulator
« on: July 03, 2012, 06:00:48 PM »
I am merely looking for a response about whether or not this is theoretically possible, not accounting for how intensive the processing would be etc.
My basic idea would be to have a program that would have a 3d modelling interface, and the model could be assigned materials that would be effective for an entire solid area. You would, after assigning all parts of a model materials, simulate a collision and have the computer generate and record the resulting sound or sounds.
I have thought of a few possible purposes for this already, but I want confirmation on the idea that it is possible.

Off Topic / Always horribly itchy
« on: June 28, 2012, 10:05:45 PM »
Apparently I have an extra-violent reaction to bug bites, but it takes me by surprise every summer. Right now I'm having trouble sleeping. I also get itchy all over when it's humid, so argharghargh.
Also, apparently, I can't stay indoors, even though I also sunburn really easily.
Discuss bugs, bug bites; anything.

Creativity / THE GAMBLER -- Piano Cover (NEW WITH VOICE)
« on: May 29, 2012, 05:56:17 PM »
No, not digitally. I recorded myself playing piano; specifically my original take on The Gambler.
Apologies for my horribly sound quality and stupid voice and all the moronic blunders, this is just a bit of an experiment.

I'd be much obliged if you'd give me feedback and forgive what I have done wrong.
