Crazy how time flies, I was just recalling the feeling of building my first PC in 2011 thinking it was some of the best hardware out at the time and now it's basically in the dust... I'm gonna be working a steady job during the school year and looking to make $100 a week. I'm going to be going to college the year after so I'm looking to upgrade/build a PC with some saved money around a budget of $1000 (not exceeding $1200, I want to buy other stuff too). What parts should I look to upgrade? Should I just try to sell my PC and build a completely new one when the time comes?

CPU: Intel i5-2500K
GPU: XFX HD 6870
RAM: 8GB
Mobo: GIGABYTE GA-Z68X-UD4-B3
HDD: HITACHI 500GB
PSU: Corsair 550W (need to upgrade this for sure lol)
Case: Antec 3000

All of this is 2011 era so I forgot specifics, but basically my system by today's standards is stuff. What should I plan on upgrading?

~$300 for case, PSU, SSD and better CPU cooler (if you're still using the stock one) + $250-300 for a GPU that I couldn't add because the availability is stuff right now, keep everything else.

Lol it IS mechanical you numpnuts, there are even pictures showing the switches. They're Cherry MX clone switches, and probably of pretty good quality too. Definitely a steal for $40.

The SSDs I've bought, two Crucial MX100s and one el cheapo Adata SP550, have coming with some Acronis cloning software just for that purpose. I've never tried it but as long as the data on your Windows partition fits on the SSD it should work.

I'd just buy an Alienware or something.  Building computers is for loving pilgrims.  "Why buy a house when you can just build one?? It's cheaper!!!".  Stupid as forget imo.

You can pair far more powerful GPUs with a Haswell i5 before the performance becomes an issue, at least a GTX970/980, R9 390(X) or RX 470/480. Given how little Intel improves on their CPU performance each generation he can probably skip socket 1151 entirely. Heck, I'm still on a 2500K and yet my next upgrade isn't going to be the CPU/mobo but rather the video card.

What would be the next logical step in terms of an upgrade? Price range around 200-300 dollars.
SSD + RX470/480, SSD first and the video card when the non-reference models some out.
you save for about 500-600
then upgrade to skylake mobo/cpu/ram
lol, that's not gonna do jack when he doesn't even have an SSD, and even then a $300 Skylake CPU/mobo/RAM combo will be maybe 5% faster than the Haswell i5 he has now.

Same price as the Lenovo, but twice the RAM and an SSD instead of a slow-ass, fragile hard drive.

You'll probably not get much better for $800, I'd say go for it.

Yes I'm definitely running 640x480 nevermind the fact that Windows XP and above doesn't even allow you to go lower than 800x600.

Bolt modding can be risky, but will fix your board.

Yeah, I've been thinking about that. The board's toast either way so I don't have much to lose.

Yes Model M master race <3
Mine's a bit out of shape though, some keys don't work properly. I'm guessing the rivets that hold the internals together are shot, gonna buy some sockets and stuff in the weekend and find out.

no please don't bring this evil here

Here's a quick build I threw together in like fifteen minutes: http://uk.pcpartpicker.com/user/Chipskate/saved/hQTscf
You can get Windows 7 for £40 and upgrade to Windows 10 for free from here: https://www.amazon.co.uk/Microsoft-Windows-Pro-English-Pack/dp/B00H09BOXQ/ref=sr_1_7?ie=UTF8&qid=1463933061&sr=8-7&keywords=windows+7
I left out the video card since IMO it's better to wait until AMD and Nvidia release their £300-350 cards, but if you're impatient I'd recommend an R9 390: http://uk.pcpartpicker.com/part/xfx-video-card-r9390p8df6
