Off Topic / Re: Which browser is better?
« on: July 01, 2012, 05:00:27 PM »
Firefox user here since 2008. It's decently fast, has an interface that isn't too dumbed down and is highly customizeable. Unfortuneately it's VERY slow at startup, and then there's also Mozilla's update frenzy.
I've considered switching to Opera since it's faster, also supports plugins, has a better interface (with a real status bar!) and is more stable. However, Opera 12 introduced something called the "plugin wrapper". It's similar to Firefox's plugin container, with the difference that it sucks. It nearly doubles memory usage and makes the browser crash a lot. I'm surprised the devs left it in in the final release. Until they fix it I'm staying with Firefox.
Google Chrome is fast, but the minimalistic interface pisses me off, and the options are awfully dumbed down. Safari is similar to Firefox, except it doesn't support plugins at all, and is therefore useless.

Tried it on my Pentium II-400, and got 21 in Opera 11.64.

I've used internet explorer for years and never had a problem with it.
There is no point in changing to a completely new browser just because some friends on the internet tell me to.
You haven't had any problems before because every has been adapting their code to IE, as mentioned earlier in the thread. However, now that web devs will ignore anything that doesn't follow set web stardards you'll start to have issues (unless you use IE 9, which actually does an okay job).

CPU: http://www.newegg.ca/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16819115072 (go with an I7 if you're doing hyperthreading tasks, get a CPU fan if you're going to overclock)
Wouldn't it be better to get a 2550K instead? It excludes the on-chip GPU and is clocked a little higher.

Add-Ons / Re: DOS Colorset
« on: June 19, 2012, 04:14:15 PM »
This actually looks quite interesting, though the title bugs me a little. DOS programs could, by using VESA modes, display screen resolutions up to 1600*1200@32-bit color. A better name would be "CGA colorset", since those are the colors used in the full CGA palette.
exact 16 colours DOS uses

still a nice colourset
Wrong. That is a small part of pre-Vista MS-Paint's palette.

Oh god, this was in an actual Donald Duck cartoon?

They weren't even there first, NCSA Mosaic was.
I know, but I forgot about that. By the way, Internet Explorer was actually built upon Mosaic's source code after Microsoft bought them out.

Mine works fine. You just have a problem with your connection/computer if that happened.
He used the same connection for both tests, and Firefox was clearly faster.
Then its the problem with the other browsers. Internet explorer was pretty much the first browser, then the other browsers came along. Internet explorer was there first.
The internet doesn't work like that; it isn't "those who gets there first gets everything". All current web standards are developed by the W3C in order to be accessible to everyone, not to be monopolized by one greedy company.
