Games / Why do FPS games do this?
« on: May 14, 2011, 09:00:18 AM »
I want to know why first person shooter games only show the hands and the gun. In real life I can see my whole body, arms, legs, feet, body, ect.

Then the way you hold your gun it always looks  like you are aiming, but if someone else looks at your character they see the gun held downwards.

In mirror's edge it fixes these problems but I always feel like the camera is too high for the actual eyes.

I would also like to see first person games use this kind of method with looking around/aiming. Right brown townog stick moves the head, left brown townog stick moves the body (moving the body left/right or walking forwards/backwards). It would be harder to master but it would take the concept of first person shooting to the next level.

Also, this means you can now shoot where your head is looking but you are able to run forwards (instead of traditional sideways running). This would simulate run and gunning better,  many third person shooters do this.

That and I would also remove the crosshair. The whole point of shooting with out aiming is not knowing exactly where your shots will fire. If you want to aim with accuracy then use the iron sights.

The crosshair just makes people want to run in the open, then they complain they are being killed by someone camping with their iron sights on. Maybe no crosshair for run and gunning would eliminate this kind of bullstuff and this would also make run and gunning less deadly/accurate.

Off Topic / Name that diagnosis.

I have stuffy/runny nose, headache, sore through, barely any cough, barely any sneeze and random watery eyes. What could this be?

By the way I never had allergies in my life so it may not even be that.

It seems that the PSN outage is beginning to have a damaging affect outside of the online realm, with retail beginning to suffer, as the patience of PS3 gamers wears increasingly thin. Sources have told Edge that there's a growing trend of PS3 consoles being traded in for cash or an Xbox 360, among other things, such as a steep decline in sales of PSN vouchers.

“In the first week of downtime we did not really see any major change in sales or trades,” states one source, an anonymous store manager for a major UK retailer. “However from the second week onwards we have seen an increase of over 200 per cent on PS3 consoles being traded in, split almost 50/50 between those trading for cash and those taking a 360 instead.”

This isn't the only testimony noting a “massive increase” in the volume of PS3s traded in over recent weeks, as another source for an independent retailer in the South West of the UK also claims that a lot of customers have been trading their PS3 in for an Xbox 360. Said source notes that it's primarily “the hardcore online shooter crowd” doing trades, just to get back online with Call of Duty: Black Ops or Modern Warfare 2.

Tom Mestdagh, of Belgian indie game store Gameswap also observed that "in every case it is because of Black Ops and or Modern Warfare 2." He also noted the sharp rise in PS3 trade-ins: “We’re just ten days into the month and already we have an increase of 200 per cent in PS3s coming into the store compared to all of March. Normally we sell them really fast, but not this time. We’ve only sold 30 to 40 per cent of our inventory right now.”

Xbox 360 versions of games are also being favoured over PS3 versions of the same game, with some consumers even cancelling PS3 pre-orders to switch to 360. For instance, for the week ending April 30th, Black Ops sales were divided 59/30 per cent in Xbox 360’s favour, whereas last week that margin grew to 66 percent of sales for the Xbox 360 version compared to a relatively paltry 24 percent for the PS3. A similar pattern also applies to sales of FIFA 11.

Customer satisfaction has also taken a massive hit due to the outage, with one such retailer claiming that “a lot of people have been phoning asking us about personal details on PSN as they are struggling to get a response from Sony themselves. Overall, people that have traded with us seem annoyed at how Sony has handled all of this, and say they would not trust them with details again in the future.”

Naturally, this only a small slice of the overall PS3 user base, consisting mainly of players craving an online fix, who have taken drastic steps to get reconnected to their favourite online games. The majority of PS3 owners remain loyal to their preferred console, and remain patient as Sony strives to restore its PlayStation Network services.

Suggestions & Requests / Gold Coins!
« on: May 12, 2011, 05:50:03 AM »

Nothing complex here, just looking to see some gold coin bricks.

A working 2x4 JVS chest would be great too.

*edit* I am thinking of two ways this would work nice/well in a way we can all enjoy.

1. Coin items that can be used for buying other items such as weapons and such. Then here is where the JVS chest comes to play when you open the chest by clicking it you can store your coins into the chest by throwing the coins at it. You will have to make sure that other items can't go in the chest.

1A.
Stupid idea unless you had a dozen slots or so to hold the coins
Coin bag, the ability to put coins in your bag and take them out when needed.
*You could open the bag as a GUI and a coin inventory system will show up on your screen.

I would also make sure the bag is not safe like the chest. If you die you should be able to lose all coins in the bag.

**tl;dr Use coins for buying weapons, safely able to store coins in JVS chest with out losing them. You can carry more coins with you in the bag however, you will lose them if you die.

2. Coin bricks as a nice looking prop for decoration. Possibly just stacked coins.

If you like classic zelda you will love 3d Dot Game Heroes. You can even make your own character. I made my in game blockland avatar, I'll show a picture later.

Or

If you are lazy you could download your own heroes made by other players.

Modification Help / v8 zombiemod source
« on: May 03, 2011, 11:20:57 PM »
This stuff does not work. Do not simply try to put it in your add-ons folder expecting it to work.

Discuss, combine your codes with others, whatever you got to do to port this.

http://www.mediafire.com/?bec4fyw7m8a946y

Here is a very sloppy, and unfinished port. This isn't meant to be played and used for fun. All I have done is put everything in one .zip, and made a server.cs to execute the files.

Only the zombies head's are shown, the apfinder needs to be executed differently.
Download

From using this, and comparing the scripts, I think I know why this lags less than Left 4 Block and ZAPT.
1. The zombies are spawned differently.
2. They aren't constantly execution functions, to wander around. Instead they directly go for the players in the server.

Like I said, this isn't to be used, and it is broken. Most of the script needs to be edited so it can work with v20. This is an awful, unfinished port, but at least it's some progress.

Suggestions & Requests / Anti personal spawns outside of minigames
« on: May 02, 2011, 07:50:47 AM »
Since v8 you could place spawn bricks and you wouldn't  be able to spawn with the brick outside a minigame. After v9 you could plant a spawn brick and use that as your spawn outside a minigame.

Being able to use a spawn brick outside of a minigame broke a lot of map boundaries. When I block off a secret area or the window from the bedroom because I don't want someone building there they just plant a spawn brick, ctrl k and spawn right inside that area.

In interior only maps like Ikea house, buildbox, ect. Anyone can plant a spawn and get outside of the map itself.

In my recent map (fallout 3) I added an invisible barrier preventing anyone from leaving the area. However they can leave it by planting a spawn brick.
