I have something to admit. User 164188- AKA "Jackhammer" as some of you might know him as- is actually an uplink of my own personality. He's currently running out of a USB stick off of a server on a Gateway 2000 computer running Windows 2000 Professional in my trailer's guest bedroom.

I'm sorry, everyone. I never meant for this lie to go on for this long.

Off Topic / classic forum theme restoration/site customization?
« on: July 21, 2020, 10:24:26 PM »
Heya, not sure if this goes here or in general/help/requests etc but i was wondering if a full classic theme restoration existed
I do have swollow's forum overhaul thing, and apparently master matthew had made something of a pretty faithful classic theme restoration later in that thread but it had an old injector/exploit in it? basically, i'm just wondering if there's a safe restoration theme out there yet for the original layout/look (https://i.imgur.com/ZY1v0JJ.png) with the original category bars, buttons, icons, etc. like what matthew had done

also i'm curious about getting into theme modding/creating themes myself (particularly stuff like changing up the color patterns of sites or its images) myself because honestly, i'm totally clueless about it all (though i do have some pretty light experience with working with HTML/basic site building stuff so im not sure if that helps any) so i'd appreciate any kind of starter tips/pointers

we just need to make a thread interesting enough to draw the lurkers in while also not causing any stuffstorms to happen
[HOT NEWS] THE FAPPENING 2: GUEST SWARM BOOGALOO

on a serious note, while this topic's title is seriously dramatized, i think sheepocalypse kinda has a point- but i'm not really sure if it's totally hopeless. i've dipped my toes back in here every now and then over the past few months but each time i've checked back in, this place seemed like half of it was ROBLOX forums tier illegible avant garde stuffposts with the remaining two quarters being master matthew & lord tony """news""" threads-- though i will say that things actually seem to have improved with a bit more potential going on here this time around

but getting back to the point, i think in this case it's a "be the change you want to see" kinda thing. really, instead of just hammering in the whole "NOBODY COMES ON ANYMORE ITS JUST POLITICS WTF" point home (yeah no stuff i think the most of us realized that over a year or two ago!) maybe try starting actually interesting & coherent discussions of your own that requires at least some input beyond one-word answers and actually instigate some kind of conversation, trying to avoid those barebones survey-esque topics. one idea i had myself was creating a revival of the "creepy stories" thread or w/e that we used to have wayyy back where people would post their own amateur (albeit fun) creepypastas basically, which was probably one of the things that kickstarted my interest in storywriting- or, maybe even just a general stuffty little short story/amateur writing thread could be open and interesting enough to get the ball rolling a bit more

trying to avoid going on a long winded nonsensical sleep deprived rant so i'll end it with saying that at a glance there at least seems to be some threads with discussion potential, the car thread, the hobby thread, and the paranormal experiences thread to name a few. any of these could be used to kickstart some interesting discussions and there's still plenty more you can try to do here. also, keep an eye out for personal experience threads or make them yourself, those have usually been a promising staple for off-topic over the years (this section isnt particularly aimed at you sheepocalypse but really just anyone reading this)

tl;dr if you're gonna rant about/buy into the idea that the forum's dying because of the current culture, at least try to stand by the idea of giving it a dignified death and be diligent in trying to find a solution and keep discussion at some level of quality beyond /b/ 4kidz edition. ignore stuff threads & bump the ones with fruitful discussion (or even just the potential for it) rather than driving a claw hammer into its already weary structure with another pessimistic thread telling us the same things we've already heard a billion times. yeah, you may get some facetious replies in your serious thread but they're not really worth doing anything more for other than ignoring & moving on
and as much as it may not seem like it right now, at it's core, the BLF is still an early/mid 2000s internet forum and is still strongly a remnant of the days of 'internet outskirts' sites. compared to other, far more popular internet forums that are still standing, it still has an amazing advantage because of that, and with any 'outskirts' community like the BLF, self-moderation is key

Quick progress report, so far I have:
- Designed a new auth database
- Written and tested scripts for converting old data into new database
- Researched steam auth on dedicated servers
- Written new auth server and master server backend

Still need to:
- Update game client/server auth
- Create new name/blid selection gui
- Test all the backend stuff
- Rewrite steamRedeem page
my mind's a bit fried from sleep exhaustion right now but i just wanted to say thanks for working on fixing all this & even creating some new stuff on top of that-- not too sure how to fully convey it myself, but it's pretty interesting to see all these changes being made/planned for BL all these years later, even stuff like the new GUI.
(out of curiosity what does "name/blid selection" entail btw? is that something new or is it something we already have that im misunderstanding?)

i'm curious to see where things will go beyond this once this is all settled & the move is complete.

gonna drive tomorrow to take pics of a weird and stupidly designed driveway; the driveway leads directly into a telephone pole so if you drive straight you crash into it
thats just what happens when you dont pay attention to where you're building stuff in simcity 4

Off Topic / Re: The Chronology of the Blockland Forums

this forum is a semi-permanent record of our lives as immature kids
i have panic attacks at night and regret remembering what i've posted here and said to people

don't worry the only parts of the internet those irrational zealots only know how to use are modern social media sites from their smartphones, they're literally incapable of navigating a traditional online forum and finding your posts.
that's definitely something i feel like i should've appreciated the forums for a lot more when it was more popular and active, nowadays a lot of the 'classic' forums i come across are either really small (even smaller and more inactive than the BL forums today) and REALLY weird communities that are basically just twitter or 4chan but in a vaguely """classic""" forum format or RP communities that i'm not part of anymore. awkward stuff. BLF was nice, it was a cute little microcosm of what i'd say could be summed up as a 'classic internet' feel well up to the mid 2010s.

i wish i had a cool avatar I COULD'VE BEEN IMMORTALIZED

Stratofortress
i remember this!! wasn't this part of a nearly site-wide fad of garfield avatar edits? or am i getting it mixed up with something else (i think there was a cookie monster one too)? those were some FUN TIMES

haha remember those blockland youtube ads to the side of the video
i was just thinking of those. they were on like 1/3 of every loving roblox video, and iirc were what got me interested in the game in the first place. i don't think they were still a thing by the time i started using an adblocker, whatever happened to them?
