You might want to take into consideration a SSD for booting your OS and working with other applications faster.

Not a bad idea.

They're relatively expensive though.

Monitor speakers generally suck.  Case in point; my monitor speakers.  They sound very hollow compared to my real speakers.

Case - holds the computer in a box. typically comes with fans, sometimes lights. the more you pay, the prettier and bigger it can be.
Power supply - takes power from outlet and distributes it across your system.  be cautious not to forget this up.
Motherboard - Think of this as the nerves of the computer.  connects everything together and sends data all across to each other.
CPU - Think of this as the brain.  Basically does a lot.  Calculate physics, video encoding/converting, etc. lots of stuff.
RAM - Sort of the muscles of this system.  The more muscles, the easier it is to lift things.  Likewise, more RAM means faster access and enough RAM for your programs which ensures your system will flow smoothly.
GPU - Makes pretty pictures.  The more expensive, the better.  The better, the bigger; the bigger, the more power consuming.  Make sure you have a very good power supply for a high-end GPU.
Hard Drive - Stores everything.  Self explanatory.
DVD drive - self explanatory again.
Operating System - The interface through which your computer will live and be used in.  Generally, Windows 7.

In that case, building it is still cheaper.

When you buy a pre-built the manufacturer charges extra to cover for the workers that put it together.  And the licensing for stuff like Windows and all that.

If you have a full $2k to spend, go for two of those graphics cards and not one.  It's up to you what version of Windows you want.

I personally got Ultimate through my dad and his connections for free, pretty much.

My problem with windows is the kernel hasn't been changed since the beginning, the OS takes up 2 gigs just to run, and all that trial bullstuff will slow it down even more. And even then, the viruses and other stuff...

I will consider all options though.

I use Windows 7 x64 with 6GB of RAM, three 2GB 1600 MHz in triple channel.  In English, it's fast.  Windows maybe uses up hardly 20% of the RAM, roughly 1.2GB.  It will use more the more RAM you have.  If you have 8GB, it would probably use roughly 1.5GB.  Likewise when I had 4GB, it used maybe 1GB itself.  Windows uses RAM, its well known but it won't bring you to a crawl when gaming.  I've played games like Minecraft that practically whore up RAM and my system will continue flowing nicely.

Trial software is only included on pre-built included versions of Windows.  If you buy a copy of Windows from NewEgg, it'll be straight from Microsoft.  No trials, no bullstuff.  This is called "Original Equipment Manufacturer", and it means that it is untouched from Microsoft to you, unlike other companies that modify the copies they sell to include their brand name, links to support lines and stupid trial bullstuff that will slow it down.

Viruses can only happen if you're absolutely stupid.  Considering you navigate the internet quite often, I don't think this is exactly a huge problem.


That being said, would you still like to stick with Windows 7?

Get something that isn't open box for your motherboard.  It'd probably save headaches in the long run.

I also suggest getting a SATA HDD.  Hard drives aren't exactly expensive except for SSDs, and although there's an IDE port in the pictures it isn't listed on the product page which concerns me.

Explain to me how AGP is in any way "more suitable for lighter gaming".  It's like saying that a smart car (AGP) is better for driving than any other car (PCI-E 2.0).  They can both get you there but one is much better at it than the other.

PCI-E 2.0 allows for much more data to be transmitted between the GPU and the motherboard (as well as the entire system).  AGP is much slower, it's like using USB 1.0 instead of USB 2.0

Plain old PCI is slower than AGP, yes.

PCI express 1.0 x16, used currently, is about 3.75 times faster than AGP 8x.

This November PCI express 2.0 will be released. PCI express 2.0 x16 will be 7.5 times as fast a AGP 8x.

AGP is highly outdated.
