yeah sure he's a great player and doesn't afraid of anything but that's kinda BS.
if you're involved in any kind of felony at all, you should just be barred from the NFL, but the NFL cares too much about money and publicity to do that.

Lewis, in his subsequent testimony, says he tried to stop the fight. Other witnesses will say they saw Lewis throw a punch, though none saw him wielding a knife. (Georgia law dictates that “any party who did not directly commit the crime may be convicted for the commission of the crime upon proof that the crime was committed and that he was a party thereto, despite the outcome of the one who directly committed the crime.”) Only one witness — an admitted con man who is later imprisoned — will say he saw Lewis actively involved in the fight.
then stop and re-read the Georgia law, which in literal terms, means "even if you didn't do the crime you're going to be convicted of it". further:
May 30, 2000 — On Day 5, no witnesses for the prosecution identify Lewis in the brawl.
even further: he went through 1 year of probation and was fined $250k, the largest for any NFL player not involving substance abuse. If you ever listen to any of his talks/seminars/speeches, he'll say the same thing: "being in jail changed my life", and in the time since he has started many charity foundations. so yeah he's totally in it for publicity and money.
