The i5 has built-in processor instructions specifically for encrypting with AES; which is 8x faster than the regular implementations. It's not even close to BS. 'Course, my harddrive is nowhere near that speed so it would only encrypt however fast my harddrive can read and write.

the i5 instructions i can believe, but yeah no way a HDD would be able to do that.  SSD yeah.

intel i5 3337 @ 1.8 GHz

that stuff should be going up to 2.7 GHz turbo boost.

AES encrypts for him at 400mb/s. And for the guy who said it was slow, for me it encrypts at 2GB/s. -.-

Try cancelling the encryption, restarting the computer, make sure nothing else is using up CPU and try again.

2 gigabytes a second?  calling bullstuff to the extreme

no experience with encrypting files but i imagine it takes a while for 500 goddam GB because it's 500 goddam GB and you probably have a pentium
