I can still remember it like yesterday. In November 2007 I placed a topic on a forum if someone knew a game where you could build with bricks. The first one that replied came up with Blockland, and shortly after that I discovered there was a free version named Return To Blockland 1.045.

General Discussion / Chervorzk development - RELEASED!!1
« on: November 24, 2022, 10:05:53 PM »
Hey all,

This is a repost of the older topic, since it was too old to edit or post something in the previous topic. There have been some people that tried to make maps similar to this one, made by bricks. Shortly before the shadows and shader update was introduced in 2012, there was someone that tried to remake the Chernarus map from the game DayZ. But the lag spikes made him quit the project.

However, since June I have been developing this map named Chervorzk and it turns out pretty awesome already. Notice how the interiors and terrain create a perfect match with each other. There is also enough spaces for farm fields, little forests, power masts, two smaller villages, a military base with airfield, etc. There will be people out there asking me why I would make a map for a game that is slowly fading away into history. The question is simple. This map will be made for Age of Time, Blockland 0002 and Blockland retail (older versions). Chervorzk is currently being developed on Blockland Classic Mod.

I will keep this topic regularly updated now and hopefully Chervorzk can change the course of Blockland's future to bring back interiors and maps in a separate Blockland client.

Anyone is free to use the map assets to make a similar map in a different environment or something. Have fun all.

very good work!
Thanks man!

Here are the last pictures before the map will be released soon. I still need to make some more homes to create some variety.

Wait, wait. new Torque 3D?

I thought Torque 3D had long since been abandoned.
-snip-
A small team went further with developing Torque 3D over the years. They even have their own discord and website.

edit:
Fix'd the animations.

the specific gpu i used was an r9 270x so actually really close, as far as i remember that gpu ran blockland the best out of all the ones ive used
and yeah torque 3d is a bit dated but it would have been a massive improvement compared to the current engine while retaining the hallmark ease of moddability that blockland is known for. im sure people would have been much more tolerant of a "we have completely overhauled the game engine but some of your addons may need to be updated for them to work" rather than the whole v21 situation
The new T3D 4.0 could be released soon. I could give it another try to fix the Blockland vanilla port. If you want to check it out, here it is.

Version 21 should had been a port were Blockland retail moved from Torque Game Engine to Torque 3d (1.2, when it became opensource in September 2012). Torque 3d was the perfect engine for Blockland because of its identical modding capabilities which Torque Game Engine had also. The modding capabilities that Torque Game Engine and Torque 3d have, is lacking in other engines such as Unity, Unreal Engine, etc. I do really miss the days were you could make a map, fill it up with interiors and place it in the Maps section to give the community another adventure to explore.

The Torque engines really gave the players an option that they could shape for a large part the game. The game BeamNG is now profiting of this feature where the community can build customized add-ons for the game, because of Torque 3d engine. Imagine if we just had Blockland retail in Torque 3d also, realistic terrain and waters, with shadows and shaders.

Here are some screenshots when I ported Blockland vanilla into Torque 3d, but the animations stopped working.

I tried to make a realistic roads, similar to ArmA3 map design. Could have worked out great for Blockland maps, if Blockland was on T3D.

what's your secret for uv mapping all the meshes efficiently?

For the UV mapping, once the 3d model is done I reset the face positions to zero. This will make the textures align perfectly on other faces especially if you are using brick or concrete textures.

You 100% need to stick one of your ships into this map too
That would eat up unneeded mission lighting in the map without any interior to be discovered in the ship. I could, however, give this more simple frigate navy ship from Peekarica an interior and polish the exterior a bit more. It would be cool to see this frigate as a wreck somewhere around the map.

First of all OP, keep up the good work. The project looks awesome and it's honestly awesome to see someone still making stuff for this game. Second, I can't believe people are still making stuff for this game. Is there still an active enough playerbase to make projects like this worthwhile?

Thanks man! This map is actually being made in Blockland Classic Mod, a ported and heavily modified version of Blockland 0002 on the latest Torque Game Engine 1.5.2.

This map would be awesome for a gamemode like the Battlefield 2 Project Reality mod.

When it's done, make a gloomy overcast version, a night version and more importantly a winter version ;)
I will.

As of today, I have ported the map to Badspot's other game named Age of Time. Age of Time has a day and night cycle and it makes the environment and buildings stand out very well. This map will also be made for the older Blockland retail and Vanilla version. I have no idea about how or what but Age of Time v3 seems to be having a really fast mission (re)lighting for Torque Constructor interiors.

Thank you all. Here is some more actual progress of the map as today. The white bridge over the river is placed there to see how much I need to shrink it to make it fit perfectly. However, all the trees on the map are causing a little bit of a fps drop now, so I reduced the draw distance similar to the GSF Paradise map to get the best fps. Problem solved.

looks great. i like that garry's mod aesthetic. couldn't care less if people weren't as good at building since it was fun enough to just make minigames or buidings with maps being its foundation. too bad badspot isnt here to reconsider utilizing maps like this

I suggested Badspot yesterday to let Blockland handle between two different client versions. The best thing to do is to have a v20 installation by default in the v21 folder if Badspot integrates this feature. When you join between servers, the client will check if there is a current (v21) or older version (only v20) server running, it will close the game, boot up the right Blockland game version and joins the server. It is the best way to keep the community happy that are pro interior and terrain fans and the shadows and shaders fans.

To be honest, I really do miss the terrains and interiors in Blockland. It was a large fun piece of the game that made you go on adventure and discover entire (city) maps.

Looks promising

Thanks!

Hey all,

There have been some people that tried to make maps similar to this one, made by bricks. Shortly before the shadows and shader update was introduced in 2012, there was someone that tried to remake the Chernarus map from the game DayZ. But the lag spikes made him quit the project. However, since two days I have been developing this map named Chervorzk and it turns out pretty awesome already. Notice how the interiors and terrain create a perfect match with each other. There is also enough spaces for farm fields, little forests, power masts, two smaller villages, a military base with airfield, etc.

Many buildings, not all, have an interior to experiment with the mission lighting limit. If this map is done for an older Blockland vanilla mod this week, people are allowed to port this map into a different format into version 21 and make a similar DayZ gamemode for it. I really do believe that maps such as this one attracts a lot of people! Too bad that my mapping skills weren't great back then before the terrains and interiors were replaced by shadows and shaders in August 2012.

As of 28 August today, I have made up a story for the map. You can find some pieces back into the map. It was 2 October 2023 when a weird yellow powder had been spread into the air during the Ukraine war. A terrorist attack? A false flag attack? Rumors are going around that NATO got involved. The yellow powder began to act like a virus, infecting thousands perhaps a million people in one day across Eastern Europe. Within weeks, the entire world had been infected. Six billion people have died of the virus, most lucky survivors did not catch the virus and those who managed to survive the virus have become aggressive flesh eating zombies. It is October 2026 now, welcome to the fiction city Chervorzk in the southwest part of Russia.

Chervorzk meets Age of Time
It seems like that the modern age has finally found the remotest region of Port Town.

I haven't been online for sometime, but I will be playing this week again.

dang, i remember reading about peekarica (i think it was a clan?) in like 2010/11 when I was a kid
It started out as a mini city, then a virtual nation with some old steamships presenting the nation also, then a game next to it and then it went over into Blockland Classic Mod to survive the shadows and shader update of 2012. It's now going over in a 20s Generation Redesign.
