When I tried to boot, all I got is a Command Prompt type screen with no text and it didn't accept any input. I can't access any recovery menus or anything, and google has been no help.Wait, you mean the screen when you're supposed to access the windows boot menu or just the grub menu (when you selected ubuntu in windows)
Oh, and windows 8 has a new bootloader so that's your problem most likely.

mine does on my desktop computer every once in a blue moon and it's happened 3 times max
someone code some hacklike plugin that tells me when that happens.
