After another moment of daydream, I'm hit with a stark reality, I'm the commander's wingman, wouldn't that put me in first line for commander? I can only wonder if in cut out to be.

I catch news of the defeat through autocat retransmissions. It hits me hard. The Huits have take the port, and allegedly Captain Steele and 2nd LT Daxton have been captured. I can't help but feel guilty, as I got out with a for-the-most-part functioning aircraft.

"Mjolinr 1-2 cleared to land Runway 9, taxi via route alpha, hold short at bravo,"

I eventually get to the hanger. The roosterpit is open, the parking spaces to my flanks, empty. My concscience, guilty.

He's probably just going to eject or just dump all of his missiles in hopes that one will hit the Jaguar's air intake (but not explode)

This would cause an explosion that would destroy the Jag.

I maneuver painstakingly up behind the tanker. The tranfer only takes a minute or two. I disconnect and continue on my way. There's only 1000km between here and Valhalla, the MiG will make it.

Everything.

In all honesty AMD will give you good quality for the price, while anything GTX will be superior, albeit more costly.

"Try it out now," one of the mechanics say.

I turn on master electronics and begin testing the controls. The aileron doesn't move.

It turns out, they only fixed the navigation lights. A fuel truck pulls up next to the plane and they give me a full tank. After which, I thank them, taxi to the runway, and take off. I head for the point where the tanker for the return trip should be at, hoping that my comrades are doing alright.

The runway comes in view and the aircraft decends slowly. The wheels touch with a bounce and a skid. The aircraft slows as I taxi off the runway. The place is desolate, the hanger all open, the aircraft, all gone. A Marshaller takes me to a waiting group of mechanics. They are outside a smaller maintenance hanger. Inside is a gutted F-16 and F/A-18, draped in a tarp of sorts. I climb out and sit on a box. The maintenance crew begins applying scab patches to the bullet holes, not a permanent fix, but it will do for now.

The crew chief askes me if I want them to take a look at the hydraulics and electronics of the MiG's control surfaces, even though none of them have ever worked on a MiG before. I say no, and thank him for his consideration.

A few minutes later, on of the technicians notices severed wired in one of the bullet holes. It's near a control surface, and it's quite possible that it could restore at least partial function to a control surface. They go ahead with sautering the wires together, as I sit on the crate and stare at the sky.

I hear Oracle's calls over radio. We're fighting a loosing battle. From the nonstop chatter, it sounds like we've lost another one of our own.

After a few more minutes of flying, the scanner picks up the airfield controller's calls.

"Contact 0712, IFF response, good. This is Colossus Tower state identification and purpose,"

"Colossus Tower this is Mjolnir 1-2, 514th Strategic Fighter Wing, Aesthian Air Force,"

There is a few moments pause.

"Assisting the defense of the shipyard?" was the tower's reply.

"Yeah, but my maneuverability is hindered severely, I have damage to some control surfaces. Any possibility of a quick fix?"

"What aircraft?"

"MiG-29,"

"We don't have those in our inventory, anywhere, sorry. We can still at the least scab patch the surfaces, maybe make some makeshift repairs, but that'll take time and there's no guarantee that we can return you to combat. We probably don't have the munitions you would need either.,"

"I'll take whatever repairs you can give. Thank you," I say.

I continue flying and begin a gradual decent.

I level off the aircraft. The Jag behind me has stalled or was shot up long ago.

At altitude, it's almost peaceful. The sunbathed off-white clouds resemble mountains of cotton pressed against an intangible pane of glass.

"Mjolnir 1-2, bug'd out and egressing feet dry,"

I look back at the aileron. It's has a few holes, which seem to have hit the hydraulics. Some fluid glitters on the skin of the piece, likely the results of bullets impacting the pistons which move the part.

The lovely thing about the MiG is that it has a glass roosterpit, no brown townog displays. A GPS shows the base marked 75 miles away. I take a deep breath and allow myself to somehow sink, or at least conform into the rock-hard seat.

You can still use them, just don't be surprised when allied planes have no idea what your character is saying.

The brevity remark wasn't intended to cause all this stir. It was just a meaningless stab at the AWACS characters.
