Here's the same angle on a darker map with the light changed to a less bright one.

Looks better to me.

Since you said to post pictures & not write essays, here are some pictures:

And for the final one, comparing interior Bedroom to brick Bedroom.

Good pictures. The lighting on the lamp is awful - specifically, I mean whoever built it put way too many lights that are way too bright on it. So it looks bad. It would look bad if you took the interior and put that many lights on it, too.

93
So, the update is for sure being put into the game?

Yes.

94
Could someone direct me to the post where he says if killed brick physics will now be accurate across all clients or not? I guess I missed that one. All I know is the lighting will effect them, but could that mean as asked?

Brick physics are not changing in this update.

95
With the increased usage of bricks, will the brick limit be raised again? I would see this as sort of a necessity as now we need to create even larger builds to include a built terrain. 512,000 would be the obvious next limit but is it possible to push it further?

Start posting saves capped out at 256k and I will look into bumping the limit up.

Also, I love love love love the update idea, but I was just thinking, and please reply if you can, Kompressor, what will there be of build styles like in the boss battles server? I mean, what's the point of stuff addapting to terrain if there's no terrain? No one will build terrain just so they can addapt to it xD

I'm not sure what you are talking about.

I like how you tell of kompressor in this video

That is a good video. But all the good parts in it are the people, vehicle and builds. I think most of the other stuff would look as good or better not being interiors/terrains. Also static DTSes will stick around for now.

I am talking about the brick saves in the kitchen MAP

There will be a way to load them even though kitchen/bedroom will be gone.

99
Will this even be optional? I'd like to see how much processing power this consumes.
To be honest a backwards compatibility system that automatically turns off special effects when loading interior or terrain maps would be much more fair.

Yes it will be optional - I've said this many times.

The issue is that the complexity required to support interior and terrain is fixed whether or not any are in the scene. Go ahead and get a Torque 1.3 code drop and prove me wrong if you want.

This is not a discussion about fairness. This is a discussion about how to keep Blockland moving forward.

Removing maps is the best way to make people better in building, it will "force" them to build.

That's not the primary goal but it's probably true.

The mapping community can now refocus their creative talents into building, as is the motif of this game.

Couldn't have said it better myself. If "mapping" means "making interiors and terrains" yes there won't be much to do for mappers. Sorry.

Aphtonites, you seem pretty annoyed by all this. Maybe you should go for a walk and clear your head.

Figures why my posts against the update were just removed, even though they have valid points.

I said in the OP I will aggressively moderate this thread.

However, you did follow the OP's suggestion, by posting screenshots. So good on you.

But the shadow update makes that second screenshot look 100x better. :)

So, just wondering, exactly what ARE the "little touches" you speak of?

Guys crouch, have particle effects, are affected by world geometry around them, have good stepping/jetting behavior, have neat little animations, scream when they fall, can be painted + exploded... Tons of stuff. Play the game and see!

MORE ANSWERS

has badspot handed the game to you or something. im confused

I work on certain parts of the game like networking, rendering, and physics.

Hopefully when the update comes out, precipitation will also be fixed so that rain can't go through our brick houses, since precipitation doesn't go through interiors.

Good idea.

We should really have a vote

Blockland is not a democracy and neither Badspot nor I were elected. Sorry.

Just so you guys know, I am professionally involved in the game middleware space - ie game engines. I am very aware of Unity, Unreal, Torque, C4, irrlicht, ogre, etc. and personally know many of the developers who work on them.

Switching engines is an 18 month project and it will kill a lot more features than just interior + terrain - like all the little touches that make the Blockheads so much fun, support for DTS, and other things.

It's much better to improve things incrementally. Players have access to frequent improvements. We can keep making a living off the game. Everyone wins.

----

For lighting details, just wait and see. I will not play 20 questions about every possible scenario of the shadows. I am glad you are excited about it! But it's better to post pictures and video as it improves rather than write essays about it.

----

That said - bricks will cast shadows based on how they look. Translucent stuff will not cast a shadow. It will work just like the shadows in any modern AAA game.

What's a point of releasing a new map when everyone will be too busy playing through the old maps they loved before they can't play them again.

We are not releasing this update in the next 2 hours. People have time to enjoy it. Take a video of the maps, too, it will be useful if you ever try to get a job in games.

Thank you Kompressor with the response. I respect it.

But we do have a point. I wouldn't find Blockland as fun without terrain maps. I don't mind about interiors.

I understand. However, this is non-negotiable. Interiors and terrain are killing forward progress in Blockland development. Trust me - it won't be as bad as you think.

Q&A SESSION 3

Will bricks with FX look different?

Maybe.

One more thing, will this also fix brick-lights on big bricks placed next to each-other?

Lighting will always be smooth, no more big jaggy lighting artifacts.

Well, I guess all the terrain creations I've been working on for months upon months are now null and void. This looks great but I'm disappointed that these projects I poured myself into, that I was excited to finish and release, will never see the light of day.

Better release 'em soon so people can enjoy them before the shadow update! Or, you could mope and delete them and feel bad about yourself for a few months if you want.
