If that person truly has managed to resist the temptation to make an alt and has really been away from the forums for 3 years then I see no reason why they shouldn't be given a second chance.

The most awful members of the community rarely leave; they just reincarnate as "a whole different person".

I took AP history in highschool. For what little of it I suffered through, I can say with confidence that it was the most painful class I've ever taken. The text, "American Pageant", is awful. My university textbooks aren't anywhere near as bad as that abomination.

You're expecting that Badspot will allow the use his authentication system for a non-critical feature like an external chat client? Not a chance.

General Discussion / Re: What do you hate about City RPs?
« on: February 10, 2011, 12:06:14 AM »
Wallet summed it up nicely.

All I can add is that the way the "jobs" in CityRP just hand out cash for simply having that position doesn't encourage any interesting forms of play. The player ends up grinding for a little while till they can get their next "job" that happens to print out a little more money for them each time. If the jobs had some meaning to them CityRP could be quite entertaining.

A few examples of possible jobs you could have: firefighters, designers, and repairers. The first puts out small fires that are randomly set around the city. Every fire they put out grants them money for their success. If they fail to put out the fire, the build gets put back the way it was at no expense to the owner but any firefighters in the server miss out on that opportunity. The second, designers, are given their choice of tasks for building public structures to improve the city. That might mean building banks, bridges, or more based on a written prompt from the server. Once they've indicated that the task is complete they can be rewarded money based on the quality of their work. The final job, repairers, assumes that public buildings (not private ones like homes) decay slowly over time. As these bricks fall off, the task falls upon repairers to replace these broken components.

The above ideas do require that the server host/mod maker generate artificial issues for the players to resolve, but at least it gives them something fun to do whilst they are in the server. The designer role encourages good building without the need for negative incentives. The roles need not be mutually exclusive and I see no reason why players should be forced to stick with a single "job".

Sounds like he has reason enough not to get back on the IRC in that case.

The news feed isn't a critical feature; As long as your add-on appears in the right category there is little to complain about. If the news feed were more selective about what new releases it mentions, then I'd agree with you.

It doesn't seem to be designed as a colony ship. It looks more like a "space carrier". Also, runways are unnecessary in space. It's difficult to see it clearly from the screenshots, but the engine doesn't appear to be very well constructed. I like the glowing stripe down the spine of the craft though.

General Discussion / Re: Dedicated Hosting Service
« on: January 31, 2011, 11:28:19 PM »
1. It's only really been down maybe two or three days since he started accepting payment.
2. Often servers can be made to post to the list with "webcom_postserver();", this has always worked for me.
3. So you're saying you only bought Kalphiter's service to convice Ephailtes to create a simular service for you to buy into?

Two or three days out of a month is a significant amount of downtime for a server. That means the server had a downtime of almost 10% assuming it's been run for a month.

Console commands shouldn't be necessary for something as fundamental has having the server show up on the list.

Yes, I bought this service in the hopes that Ephialtes would offer a similar, better service. The service has been disappointing thus far so my concerns over having Kalphiter running this were valid.

And if Ephialtes is to say that it doesn't happen as often, neither has this service hit problems often. We got up on the wrong foot yet after that I think this ran well. Only a few Hiccups along the way!

It's difficult to decipher what you're trying to say, but I assume you mean that Kalphiter's dedicated servers are as reliable as the services Ephialtes has offered over the past few years. That's a laughable claim.

This dedicated hosting service has been a disappointment thus far; the service is not as easy to setup as it could be and has been inconsistent over all. Servers have been randomly stopping and starting and often they fail to appear on the server list.

I don't regret paying for the first month. My interest was more in proving that people are willing to pay for a service than it was in having the server run by Kalphiter. I hope the participation of this many people is enough to convince Ephialtes that it's an idea worth pursuing.

Everyone is discussing memory and disk space as if they are they are the reason you can't have a BL-like game on a phone. It appears none of you can conceive of anything but a direct port of Blockland to a mobile device. Has it not crossed your mind that a BL game for mobile devices need not be 3D or be anywhere near as complex or demanding as its desktop counterpart?

It might be fine on purely feature phones like an Android (hooray! I can watch ads on my phone and have my battery die twice as fast!)

What exactly is a "feature phone"? Do Apple products lack features? Jests aside, the Flash software isn't included in the Android OS, but it is an available option. Even if it were standard, I think you'll find that features common to all smartphones (such as WiFi and GPS) are far more likely to drain your battery life quickly than using certain kinds of content-players.

« on: January 26, 2011, 02:34:40 AM »
I don't see why you'd need a special app to browse these forums, and why would you need to check the server list when you are away from a BL-capable computer? This would just put an extra burden on the master server for no reasonable benefit. This idea holds no merit.

You can't, people can only see custom decals if they also have them.

You cannot force people to download your images.

For good reason too. I can only image the horrors that might show up if players were allowed to upload images to other people's servers.

Even if it is possible, no.
If it works, no.
If it were out now, no.

That really makes no sense. I can understand rejecting an idea if it's impractical or overtly offensive but to reject a working system without reasonable consideration seems quite foolish.

No mobile Blockland application exists right now so I'm not sure how you can outright reject the idea. If the proposal were more specific than just "put Blockland on mobile devices" then I might understand.

Off Topic / Re: Can someone explain what a dual core processor is?
« on: January 24, 2011, 11:37:26 PM »
My mother believes that the monitors are the actual computer; when I told her I intended to upgrade she demanded to know why I needed a new machine when I already had 3 computers. Needless to say, it's the only time I've really ever regretted having so many screens.

Another fun fact is that my parent's computer is in most ways superior to my own. My father asked me to spec out a build and he ended up getting the i5 750. I'm sadly still stuck on an old Core 2 Duo E6850.
