Help / Re: BL crashes when trying to start an internet game
« on: March 08, 2010, 04:41:37 PM »
Did you try leaving it for 5 minutes to see if it times out? I suspect your college would have something in place to prevent these sorts of UPnP requests anyway.

It appears to work now.

This is an issue with some routers returning weird info when asked for their UPnP details. Either it doesn't return anything and the game sits there waiting until it does, or it returns malformed details which blow up Blockland.

You can try starting a server and leaving it frozen for about 5 minutes, It should reach a timeout and just continue starting the server. This is an issue with your router though - and v15 allows you to disable UPnP so you can host via the port forwarding method only as before.

Ah, that makes more sense. I think I saw similar behavior when I tried to run a dedicated server.

Unfortunately, I'm using my colleges internet connection right now so I have no control over their routing equipment. It's a great connection, but I guess you have to "pay the price" somewhere. I'll just go ahead and wait for V15 and try disabling UPnP then.

If you've got an ATi video card, turn off Catalyst A.I. This is incompatible with Blockland, and will cause you to crash when loading.

I wish the solution were as easy as that. Unfortunately I am using an Nvidia card so that likely isn't the issue.

It is really quite strange. I can launch my own singleplayer/LAN servers just fine which leads me to believe it is a networking issue, but at the same time I've never had a game crash before over such a thing.

The body presents an incredible dichotomy to the knowledgeable observer.

On the one hand is quite resilient. It can heal wounds, replace billions of lost cells, actively fight off and create cures for diseases, and can adapt to a wide range of environments.

On the other hand, the body can be quite fragile. A thin set of electrical connections are all that allow the body to function as a whole, a number of natural toxins can easily overcome the bodies defenses, and the immune system developed to protect the body can even start attacking itself under a selection of circumstances.

The answer to your problem is to either see a therapist or start wearing concealing clothing such as "turtle-neck" sweaters.

Help / BL crashes when trying to start an internet game
« on: March 06, 2010, 05:52:48 PM »
I can run a single-player server and join online games without issue, however when I go to launch my own internet game it freezes. By that I mean that nothing occurs and no other buttons can be pressed and the game must be shutdown through the task manager.

For troubleshooting I have tried running only with the default add_ons and by using a fresh install of BL to a new location; both failed to resolve the issue.

It has been awhile since I've hosted an online game so I can't say if this is a recent issue and/or a result of an update. I've attached the console log from the fresh install of BL. Also attached is a screenshot of the DOS window after it stops working.

I own the full version of FRAPS and it works alright, but it can give you a significant performance hit.

I've heard PlayClaw is quite good, check it out.

Yeah, you can't play "social games" with a PC.

Fun fact: AC/DC is slang for biloveual.

AC/DC are typically used as acronyms for Alternating Current and Direct Current.

It is also the name of a popular band from the 1970's.

General Discussion / Re: What's with LAN and trust?
« on: February 27, 2010, 09:16:42 PM »
I believe the assumption is that when you are running a LAN server you can simply use physical force to resolve any issues.

There may also be a technical issue in that players may/may not have there own unique BLID which is a part of the trust system.

The ASUS Eee PC series is quite affordable.

They have small desktops and laptops.

Shot in the dark, but how 'bout that one?

Nope. Minimum requirements for Windows XP are...

  • Pentium 233-megahertz (MHz) processor or faster (300 MHz is recommended)
  • At least 64 megabytes (MB) of RAM (128 MB is recommended)
  • At least 1.5 gigabytes (GB) of available space on the hard disk
  • CD-ROM or DVD-ROM drive
  • Keyboard and a Microsoft Mouse or some other compatible pointing device
  • Video adapter and monitor with Super VGA (800 x 600)or higher resolution

The 2GB HDD means you essentially won't have room for anything but the bare OS. Even temporary files could easily fill it up. The screen resolution is also too small.

Ubuntu, a popular Linux distro, requires at least 4GB of hard disk space. You could run Puppy Linux of an attached USB flashdrive but that is far from an ideal solution.

You won't be able to run Windows on that laptop. I doubt Microsoft Office will run. You may have to stick with something light like a combo of Google-docs and a Linux OS.

Sounds like a good idea.

Would be nice if certain ubiquitous add_ons such as the Duplicator wand and the JVS content system were included. They are both fairly common and I believe the Dup-wand doesn't even need a download.

I'd like to suggest that there isn't any solid connection between practicing abstinence and establishing valuable, long-lasting, relationships.

I might also add that it may lead to future discomfort in social situations and opportunities may be lost.

Shadows appear to be exaggerated and the image as a whole could use some anti-aliasing, but it has potential.

If you could add backgrounds to it and/or other effects it could really "spice up" an otherwise normal build.
