i'm giving you an alternate solution to your problem
PROBLEM: need to transport ores
your solution: water that takes things down creating lag.
my solution: minecarts with chests in them.

My solution: Kill mobs.

how many loose blocks and items can be on the ground at once? and how long do they last?

i was thinking of flooding the ground of one of my mineholes to water-rush dropped ore and junk to an end location.

just dont want the better stuff disappearing because they game requires me to grab them within 15 min.

I think around 100000 or more can be on the ground at once. However, the more there are, the more fp's the game will use to keep the game running. Items last for around 3 mins so if you die in a cave, You need to be quick or you will lose you'r stuff.

think about it, you could add a pressure plate at the bottom of a deep hole and put a spring going into it. you hook up the plate to a piston that is holding back the water. it would drown the mobs that went into the hole without any danger to you or any humans.

Very nice idea, i might do this after i make a crushing machine.

Each piston is connected to a redstone circuit behind the cobblestone walls, all of the redstone is connected to the piston's are connected to a lever in a watch room/control room at one of the ends of the machine. When a mob fall's into the trap, the water will drag them to the machine. They cant escape unless the player opens the machine door, witch blocks the way to the pick up post. There are 2 levers in the watch room/control room. 1st One turns the machine on and off, ON makes it crush mobs that are in the machine, OFF makes mobs not to be crushed. the 2nd lever makes the machine door open and close, It is not a good idea to open if mobs are still alive in the machine or they may attack you in the pick up post, So you should open it once all mobs die in the machine. The water will carry the drops to the pick up post witch the player can use for such as TNT and bonemeal.

you could add a pressure plate trap too, or a sand/gravel drop trap.

I was thinking doing it by button/lever, Pressure plate's would be a little harder through but i can give it a go once 1.7 is out but you got a good point.

Does anyone know if piston's make you take damage if they push you into a wall or if 2 piston's facing each other crush you? If they do, I would make water traps to trap monsters in that go to a crushing machine that will crush them and drop there loot and it goes to the pick up post. That would epic.
