General Discussion / Re: The plan for v20
« on: October 07, 2011, 08:20:46 PM »
Game related folders currently in my "My Documents" folder:

ArmA 2
Battlefield 3 Open Beta
DeadIsland
DFO
DragonNest
Duke Nukem Forever Demo
Eidos
EVE
PCSX2
SoldnerSecretWars
VVVVVV

Half of those games I didn't even know existed. However, unless it uses some sort of decal and face sharing purpose, wouldn't it be better to keep everything in one location?

minecraft, to continue our dumb comparisons to it, also tends to dump itself into the user's Application Data folder.

also, regarding how you will use this fabulous new system, do you have any particular ideas yet regarding new content or whatnot to be distributed with this, or is it just setting the foundation for some yet unknown glory?

Minecraft was made to work in-browser or in a separate download to allow Textures and skins to be transferred easily. Blockland however isn't.

Not to be rude, but have you ever played a game? Many, many of them store things in the Documents folder.

I have played several games. I also know programs use this file path as well, like Fraps. I just think for games, if need be, to put the files in a place that doesn't have school work or buissness articles in the same place. The AppData would work just the same.

I know very well this isn't going to be made but; Furling seems to think that it's unfair for it to be released because of a community of 4000+ he's the only deaf person.

I though he was just one of those people who hates everything, but that works too.

Wut? It's not hard to get to. Just go to 'My Documents' in the start menu.

It's just not something you would see usually in a game.

Except for the builds currently on the server. So for that he would either have to make it "hot-swappable" or he would have to implement Minecraft-ish autosave/-load.

I don't see how this wouldn't be a hassle to do, if programed to do it before the server shuts down.

Speaking of the way Minecraft runs, if we are going to compare the dedicated launchers, then I must say that I think the Blockland Server.exe will be very similar to the Minecraft Server.exe. Of course, the Java console won't appear, but the way the files are stored and read will be the same, unless there is another way that Baddy is doing this.

The launcher downloads the game to %userprofile%/My Documents/Blockland/ (windows) or /Users/<username>/Documents/Blockland/ (mac) and runs the game from there.  Everything inside the Blockland folder is the same.  There should be no compatibility problems.

I'm reading the path file for windows and all I have to say is, that will be a pain in the ass to find if you aren't familiar with it. I would rather keep everything in one place, than have two separate areas where files are stored.

Anyways, if you haven't notice, the clan site has been updated, and I'm also thinking of plans for {EC} in Minecraft. Right now, I am going to start making a town so that we all can hang and hopefully start getting some motivation going on around here.

What is wrong with you?

I stated my opinion and some of my concerns. I see no problem in that.

he's killer2 if that's any help

Who are you to judge me? I am me, and if you don't like that, then you need to take a look at the world once in a while. It's not like the world itself is full of perfect people.

Thanks. Seems legit, but I hate Wikipedia since it is basically made by anyone. Why would UAC be needed anyways?

Awesome. :D

I mean, I'm more excited than I've ever been about any kind of update on anything somehow.

Now all we need is an expansion or players.

i doubt it. badspot's never seemed like the kind of person who would do that. if he did make more content updates like that it would be cool.

Since this update can do such a thing, maybe Badspot plans to use this to do just that.

The main feature of v20 is going to be a new auto updater.

Features:
  • Does not require a new installer for each update
  • Can update without admin privileges
  • Works on the Macintosh
  • Works with UAC
  • Avoids script/exe mismatches
  • Restores accidentally damaged files
  • Works with dedicated server
  • Works with multiple user accounts
  • Allows me to easily put out small, quick updates

From v20 on, you will run Blockland via a launcher program that looks something like this:

-snip-

This launcher program contacts the master server, gets the latest version information, downloads any new files, verifies your files, then runs the game.  The launcher can run from "Program Files" (or "Applications" on the mac), your normal familiar Blockland files will be automatically written out to your user profile directory before running.  Add-ons and everything will still work, you just put them in a different place now.

To run a dedicated server, you will run BlocklandLauncher.exe -dedicated (and whatever other arguments you like).  The launcher runs in console only mode, updates, then runs your dedicated server as normal.

The initial roll out of v20 will add no significant new features.  The goal is to get the new update system up and working for everyone.  Once the new update system is in place, implementing new features will be much easier.  The release is still some days out.  I am giving you this information now so you can get used to the idea and not freak out as much when change occurs.

I quoted the entire OP to point out a few things:

1) When you say multiple user accounts, are you talking about on multiple computers, or actually allowing one computer to hold multiple accounts?

2) I like how Linux may not get the benefit of this update, since it does not say if the new auto-updater works for Linux.

3) Wait, New Add-ons location? Where exactly does the new folder go for this? Plus, it disappoints me to see it be changed, because the place where it is now is completely fine. I don't seem to get the change of the Add-on Folder.

4) Speaking of the Add-on change, this will require Ephi to re-write the Mod Manager code of RTB, since the Add-ons folder will be in a new location.

5) UAC?

6) Updating without admin privileges? I feel this can be more elaborate.

7) Dedicated server launcher is changed?  Using a new .exe file instead of a .bat might throw people off.

Other than that, I think that this will be a nice update. What I would like to see is this game only be required to be downloaded instead of having to go though an installation process. Possibly playable in-browser?

One last thing, Ephi mentioned a fix in v20 that will help RTB do some sort of specific function. I think that should be included in the features list.

Where will we have to put our Add-Ons in when this comes out.

eheh... beat me to it.
