Repost
Old Topic

Originally I was going to post this in the RTB Development topic, since this is related to RTB, but it makes more sense to be here than there.

While browsing the RTB Content Packs, I noticed something. There is an Advanced Bricks Pack, Advanced Builder Tools Pack, and a Advanced Emitters Pack. But there is no Advanced Lights Pack. There are plenty of great light-related Add-Ons, and it would be nice to see them tossed together into a single pack.

I was thinking we (by we I mean me and anyone else who agrees) could possibly setup a list of light packs and vote which ones should/could be in the Advanced Lights Pack, if Ephialtes considers putting the pack together.

What exactly makes up an "Advanced Pack"? How did Ephialtes or any other RTB Moderater determine what makes up an "Advanced Pack"?

Off Topic / Improve Video Quality With Sony Vegas?
« on: December 03, 2011, 02:14:48 PM »
I have a pretty low-end computer, so when I record Blockland with Fraps, my framerate drops. The only way I can avoid this is if I set Blockland to Windowed Mode at 640x480. So now the framerate is fine, but the quality is very low.

Is there a way to improve the quality with Sony Vegas Pro 9? I know I have somehow done it before with Windows Live Movie Maker on my older videos, so when you watch it in HD on YouTube, it is in HD. Even though the video was recorded in SD.

Basically, is there a way to improve low-quality videos with Sony Vegas Pro 9?

About Marble Hornets
Marble Hornets DVD Trailer
Marble Hornets is an Alternate Reality Game (more like an Alternate Reality Movie), following discoveries made while looking through raw footage of a trite student film.

In 2006, film student Alex Kralie suddenly abandons his movie in the midst of production, swearing to burn the tapes and never speak of it again. Alex's friend Jay rescues the taped material and, years later, begins reviewing them, only to realize too late that the abandoned film shoot was a High Octane Nightmare Fuel refinery and that by digging it up again he may have reawakened sinister forces.

Jay's YouTube account chronicles material from the tapes and, increasingly, the bizarre and frightening events of his own life . A Twitter page was added some time later. Since Entry #9, he's noted a guy named 'totheark' responding to each entry, adding a whole new level to the scary.

I've been looking to get a new laptop, somewhere around $1,000. Currently I have an HP G71, and I'm quiet fond of HP's laptops. I'm not sure how well this can run games though. I'm basically looking for something that could possibly run Left 4 Dead 2 at highest settings with a framerate of 30FPS.

If you can suggest a better laptop, feel free to do so. I'm not very smart when it comes to graphics cards and processors, it's like a whole other language to me.

Getting the ASUS G74. Thanks guys.

Off Topic / Intense Situation With Friends
« on: September 30, 2011, 11:34:17 PM »
Alright, today I planned on sleeping after getting home from school, but I couldn't help myself from playing some GTA :P
It's around 7PM, and it's getting dark out, day is almost over. My friend calls me (we shall call him Darren), and says he is with his cousin and cousin's friend (John; Shaun), they want to hang out. I decide to get out of the house and tell them I'll meet up with them. We are on our way to Darren's house. On our way there, about two cars full of college kids (not consecutive) drive by and scream at us.

Now this happens to us all the time. We live near a university, so there are always college kids driving by on the weekends, that throw trash at us, or scream at us when they drive by. It can get pretty annoying. So one day me and my buddy Darren decided, we'll carry a small rock or stick around and throw it at their car when they throw something at us or yell. Not something overly large that will damage it, just enough to let them know we hit them with something. So some days there would be a point where we would be carrying something small, decide to just drop it since no one drives by and bothers us, so we leave the object behind. And when someone would drive by, throw trash, yell, swerve close to the sidewalk etc., we never had anything to throw.

So tonight, we were just wandering around the area around Darren's house and decided to stop by there and get something to drink. We are right around the corner from Darren's, roughly halfway down the street, and a SUV drives by, they stick their head out the window and scream at us. John says "God dammit Tyler, why don't you ever have a rock with you?". Thinking quick, I see a small rock in the street, I grab it and throw it at the back windshield of the SUV. There is a small "pop", and the SUV stops right in it's tracks. Darren, John and Shaun are already running down the street. I'm trailing behind them, the driver of the SUV yells "You better loving run you piece of stuff" - no doubt he is angry - and we run around the corner. My three friends run into Darren's apartment, by the time I was passing by the apartment, the SUV of college kids was already turning around. So I continue to run down the street, I know I'm going to get the stuff beaten out of me if these guys get a hold of me. I am passing by someone's lawn where at the edge they have a small concrete wall, so I hide behind that.

They begin to drive down the street, I keep looking around the corner of the small wall to see how close they are, the headlights shine on me and they see me. I run into someone's backyard and there is this steep hill with trees, bushes etc. So I jump in there and throw myself down the hill, I hear the car doors open so they are getting out. I finally get to the bottom and out of there, they are probably back in the SUV now, it's not like they are going to leave it behind. Now I'm behind this small row of one-floor apartments, so I go around it and across the street. I'm starting to run out of breath, to the point where your throat gets cold and scratchy, you know what I'm talking about, right? So I get into the university parking lot and hide behind a car. John calls me and asks me what is happening, I let him no I have no time to talk and I'm exhausted so I hang up.

I stay behind the car for a minute or so then make my way down to a snack booth right next to the football field, I hide behind that and tie my shoe. I leave the parking lot and continue running down the street, I just don't want to stop running, but I keep running out of breath and stop behind a tree. I'm there for a few seconds before I go up this small hill onto the side of the highway. Not a highway-highway, like with toll booths, one of those small ones in a suburban/residential area. So I'm behind the guard rail, I call John and let him know to meet me in the university lobby. Meanwhile, I decide I don't want to be seen, so I climb this fence where there is a large banner covering it, so I can be behind that. I reach a side entrance to the university and enter. I make my way down the hall, and over to the next building where the lobby is. I finally meet up with the three, and describe to them what happened after we got separated.

In hindsight, it was a pretty bad idea but not a totally boring day after all :P

Here is a highlighted map of the route I took incase I didn't describe it well enough for you.

Click the image for larger version.

1. Area around Darren's house.
2. Where car drives by and I throw the rock.
3. Where I hid behind the short wall, cut the yard, down the hill.
3.5. Going around the corner from the one-floor apartments, crossing the street.
4. Hiding behind a car, catching my breath.
5. Tying my shoe behind the snack booth.
6. Catching my breath again behind the tree.
7. Getting onto the "highway".
8. Climbing over the fence.
9. Entering the university.
10. Reuniting with my friends c:

So I guess, discuss your close calls or stupid mistakes you've made? Or discuss this.
MegaScience's idea to post this after I told him about it on Steam :o

As most of you know, Fraps can drastically lower your framerate if you have a crappy PC (or a laptop in my case). Due to the high CPU usage from Fraps, can it slow down Datablock loading and Object loading? From my experience, it does, but I'm no expert and not very well at explaining why.

Secondly, when I play in Singleplayer, the player list states that there are 1/x players in the server, where x > 1. I noticed that x is also equal to the player amount I had set when I hosted a server. Does Singleplayer ever display 1/1, or is it always 1/(whatever you player amount was set to)?

Modification Help / [RESOURCE] Default Weapon, Vehicle, Tool & Player Models
« on: September 03, 2011, 05:11:58 PM »
Since I needed the Sword as a prop for something I'm doing in Blender, I decided to go through a series of imports and exports to get it to a .blend. With Shaper (A .dts importer) only being available for free with a 30-day trial, I decided to do the rest of the default weapons too.

Default Weapons: (.blend) (.txt) (.obj)

Default Vehicles: (.blend) (.txt) (.obj)

Default Tools: (.blend) (.txt) (.obj)

Please note: The Milkshape one does have nodes.

Player Model & Doll, special thanks to TheKhoz

Player Model: (.ms3d) (.3ds) (.skp) (.blend)

Player Doll: (.dxf) (.skp) (.blend) (.ms3d)

Since the DTS Exporter only works with Blender 2.49, I've read some people model and such in 2.5, then animate it and export with 2.49.

How exactly would I go about using 2.49 just to export and animate? Would I have to uninstall 2.5 and reinstall 2.49 everytime I wish to export, or is there some kind of workaround for this?

Off Topic / I Finally Did It - Time Offset
« on: September 03, 2011, 02:57:57 AM »
I finally got the Time Offset to actually match my local time. I would always use "Auto Detect", but the time displayed on the forums would always still be off no matter what. I have just come to realize that the Time Offset can also be in decimal form, so I set it to 1.278 and now it is perfectly synced up.

But I'm guessing most, if not, all of you, already knew this and I'm just slow.

General Discussion / Do you build your own doors or use JVS?
« on: August 22, 2011, 07:56:21 PM »
Well, I was in the middle of recreating a city from a game, and I got to the point where I have to build doors, and I'm not quiet sure wether or not I should just use JVS, or build my own doors. I thought, I might as well ask the community, and which do you prefer?

Build the doors yourself, or just use JVS?

Mapping Help / Skybox: Reflection Image
« on: August 08, 2011, 02:34:09 PM »
Alright, so I have a 1782x1782 texture that I am going to use for the skybox in a map. I know that you divide the texture into six pieces-one for each side of a cube-but could I divide it into five pieces instead? So the bottom texture would be different from the sky, like Plate?

Next, how would I go about dividing it into five pieces if one is supposed to be for the top?

Here is the texture scaled down, if it will help in any way.
