Animal Crossing is a "Life Simulation" game, devoloped by Nintendo. It has open-ended gameplay, and one of the first games to make use of the internal clock on your console, when a day passes in real life, a day passes in the game. There are also Holidays in the game also.
(Christmas, Thanksgiving... etc.) Four Animal Crossing games have been released worldwide as of the making of this thread, I will explain them, click their images for the wiki page to learn more.
Animal Crossing : The first game in the series, originally for Nintendo 64 but was ported over to the Gamecube. You're a new resident in town, and when you start up the game you will be greeted by a cat named Rover. All of the characters, besides you, is a animal, kinda freaky but you get used to it. One of the main goals in the game is to upgrade your house, you may customize it however you want, roof color, flooring, wallpaper, furniture, etc. When you get in the town, you will soon meet Tom Nook,
(A tanuki, not a god damn racoon!) He has a local store, which you will buy your stuff from. He also sells you your first house, with a mortgage of 19,800 Bells, Bells are a currency in the game. Tom Nook will also offer if you want to expand your house when you pay off your mortgage. There are a total of six villagers at the start, they move in or out depending on your actions. More villagers come on in later.
Animal Crossing : Wild World : Basically Animal Crossing but on the DS, more customizability.

Animal Crossing : City Folk : Similar to the other Animal Crossing games, but on the Wii and (in my opinion) better. This one includes a City the player can explore, you still live inside the village though. The game has Online Multiplayer, and also has Wii Speak, so you can have Voice Chat.

Animal Crossing : New Leaf : For the 3DS, released in Japan November 8 2012, releasing in the first half of 2013 for other regions. Similar as the other ones, but this time you start out in a tent, instead of a house, that can be upgraded and expanded. You can now modify your pants in shoes in this game also. The major change is, you play as the mayor, and can customize other peoples homes.
