Walter waves and points out what he can see while yelling

"There! Is that another way into the hull?"

"I'll catch up-" Walter moves to help out Virvel in what little ways he can, looking for alternate entry points into the carrier or any object that he could use to bridge the gap

Looking around yourself you see everyone else on the walkway in an equally dazed stupor, with Virvel confusedly looking back at everyone else as if to make sure she's not imagining things. The evening sky is being lit up by stray LAMS fire from both the Indomitus and the cruiser a few hundred meters out, and a wide, incredibly fast moving silhouette passes between the cruiser and carrier at just above your elevation, seemingly fading into the background as it continues on its path. As you run towards the door you entered from, a missile strikes the deck below you, sending a large piece of debris up through the walkway behind you. Virvel is thrown off her feet on the other side of the newly formed gap, and Arkhip falls forward, his momentum causing him to roll under the railing and fall off the balcony. He grabs the ledge to prevent himself from falling off the carrier entirely, but lacks any foothold to pull himself back up.

"Fenrirs?" Walter stammers out disoriented from the muffle of noise around, he quickly sorts himself and gains his bearings from the blast as he wipes away some of the blood coming out of a gash across his cheekbone. He shortly looks over at Virvel briefly before promptly deciding Arkhip is in a more dire need, Walter moves back over to the railing and hooks his leg around one of the posts as he leans down to attempt and grab any good grip on Arkhip with his hands.

Walter jumps and curses aloud while he covers his face for a few moments and stumbles back to the wall, then lifts his arm up to look if anything is in vision before moving towards the door

: Mm, your people would be the ones to imagine the aftermath of atomic genocide as "sunshine and rainbows", wouldn't they.

"Well, anyone souped up on their share of propaganda to not see the other side of things and just blindly follow Tarkirov and whatever the government has to say, As far as I know the populace doesn't know about this plan. Even then it's completely bogus because the Imperials themselves know and could easily counteract this with some forward warning, I don't understand how they think it can work."

: So... you left because you didn't feel respected?

"I'd say so to a certain degree, I have my fair share of being stubborn and being a little unorthodox with how I operate, but I wouldn't mind the option to at least have a little more say in things." Walter lets out a sigh "Perhaps someone didn't want me to have that, or someone never filed my flight operations. The Important thing anyways is I don't want to fight for something that we lose either way-" Walter shifts uneasily and narrows his eyes

"This of course is also all on the merit of a purported nuclear deadman's switch, which I suppose won't change anything for me if it's real or not now that I'm standing here on this carrier. Even if I supported Aesthia; nuclear weapons would be launched on some accord, It can't be all sunshine and rainbows like Tarkirov imagined."

: I suppose you could call it that. Why are you here, anyway? I have my doubts that you people would stick your necks out for us if it didn't somehow benefit you even more.

"I'm not quite sure, It's a plethora of things but mainly focuses on my trust of certain people. I don't have much to gain from this but I also didn't have anything to lose at the same time; despite being the top ace in the Airforce I wasn't handed much recognition or reward for serving the majority of the war, My family would've supported my decision given they had the full picture, and I was given an opportunity to swap over easily without bloodshed by the Kintharians."

Walter looks to the side at the landscape again

"I guess it's just a moral choice oddly enough, I have some familiar faces here for now but there's no telling what comes after that."

: I know we have, I recognize the unit emblem on your planes. Your people helped stop the insane Huit from launching nuclear missiles at Mercana.

"Hm; and now we're helping stop an insane Aesthian from launching missiles at the Imperium. Funny how that turned around."

: Huh. I think I know who you're talking about. I flew with someone by that name who led a unit of Aesthian slave-pilots.

Walter roosters his head towards him while he slightly squints in thought "I wonder... I know a few times we had crossed paths with her on the opposing side, I wouldn't be surprised if we've gone against you also at some point."

: Hold on- what did you say her name was?

"Coaxoch. I still have a hard time pronouncing her name properly. She transferred some Aesthian POWs back over to us after the war ended, then she just stuck around as base staff until moving away to Kintharia where she might be a little more accepted as a normal person.

He gestures over his shoulder at his squad leader.
: Well, this guy knows it at a conversational level because of a period of service with a Deltan squadron that had a bunch of Aesthians in it.
: It is a long story.
: Everyone else seems to at least know a few phrases; I guess because Aesthia is enemy number one over here, they want to be able to know what we're saying? But that doesn't mean they like speaking it, more than once I've been on the receiving end of someone pretending not to know any so they wouldn't have to talk to me.

"It's likely they've lost some friends or family, I remember speaking with Coaxoch about this sort of thing when she was staying on base with us. She was fairly alienated herself by the rest of the staff despite her knowing Aesthian. The same effect goes on here I assume for the majority of people, even if we weren't responsible for something were still an easy and convenient scapegoat. Especially if you're to find out who some of us are."

He sighs.
: I don't know. Fine, I guess.

A few awkward seconds go by.
: ...Not really the most substantial answer, but I haven't really had a chance to settle down and start living here or anything. I signed on with the Imperial Air Force because, well... it's not like I can find any other jobs here, and they put me in a late-stage training unit. I'm assuming it's so I can learn how they do things here without being dead weight in a real squadron. Still weird being several years older than your CO though.

"I know I wouldn't enjoy that if I were in your shoes, but I've always been a stickler for not listening to commands in the first place anyways... How's the language barrier though? I've already had a bit of issue with it from my short time here, and I've only ran into a handful of people that can speak Aesthian Fluently. "

I don't even know if she likes pizza, and even then how would I explai-

Walter turns to face Arkhip and address him, looking surprised as he's caught off guard thinking.

"Oh, Hey- No that's understandable. Something you thought you left behind in your life for good that came back to your doorstep all at once... How have things been going for you here anyways?"

Walter remains silent as he looks out at the bleak landscape, almost enjoying the atmosphere from some strange sense he couldn't pinpoint. The slight grin that Walter had soon dissipated as he was reminded of the creeping dread that kept pulling at the back of his mind, wanting more and more attention as him having to make a choice became more prevalent. With each hour that passed undistracted Walter grew more uneasy.

I should've stayed and tried speaking more with Musashi, that was really helping me out.

He looks at the kintharians farther down the walkway for a moment and then quickly at Virvel for another, then swivels his head over at Arkhip and Paladius before uncomfortably turning back to the landscape.

Not like there's any flight officers I can open up to either, and for me to ignore a lifetimes worth of propaganda against the Imperium at the same time as they throw their pitch to me- and not to mention their own propaganda they'll throw at me to try and make me stay. That one imperial that suggested the colony to Klara seemed honest, but I just don't know.

Walter breathes in a large breath of the brisk air, stinging his lungs in a pleasent way as he backpedals and collects his thoughts

Mercenary work, Working for the imperium, or maybe finding somewhere nice to settle down... Kintharia? Mercana? That colony with... her?

Walter turns to watch Virvel smoke as he's caught up in his thoughts about what to do after everything is over, that is, if it does end well.
