Off Topic / Re: The violin oh how I want to learn to play it
« on: May 08, 2012, 12:42:33 AM »
I took violin lessons for a few years, never got past 1st position of the hand, but I can play things by ear in that range. I mostly play video game music on it now, pretty fun when you think of a new song that might be good to play.

I'd love to get an electric violin...

I was just in DC this past Friday-Tuesday, I miss it already! It's really neat being able to walk and take the metro to anywhere you need to go, I hope I get to visit again.

When did you get in DC, are you staying at a hotel in the center of everything, or outside? We stayed at one near the Crystal City station.

Playable version probably doesn't mean public. Just a version that actually does something similar to the end result he could show off in a video.
If you look at the official 0x10c site, "Releasing a DCPU-16 emulator environment" is on the todo list. Looks like it's going to be public.

Edit: Just read Notch's twitter and see that you weren't talking about the DCPU-16, I agree, playable probably doesn't necessarily mean public in this case.

I think you guys are over thinking the viruses. You can't simply infect someone with a virus. Until there is a standard OS or something with a flaw running on most ships, it'll be highly unlikely you can mass infect ships. Even if there is a standard OS or something when the game launches, most players will probably simply use it, and it'll be the OS writers who are responsible for protecting from attacks.

Stop being cheap and come up with 20$ for a VPS.

It's ridiculous.
We WERE hosting it on a $20 VPS from linode.

Give the stuffs to me.

Ill try to host it tonight. see how well it does tonight and we'll go form there.
It'd be pretty cool if you could host, but didn't you say you can't host 24/7?  Hosting irregularly is better than nothing, but that's still low quality.

begin a new map, less memory to deal with.
What about when the map gets big again? I'd feel a little bad if we couldn't get to the later stages of game or build big factions.

~2mbs upload/download.

and 500mb of ram?

That's for a loving website. Not processing monster like Minecraft.

With 300 mess of RAM you would've been fine with ~4 players, you were applying with an average of 16.

For 16 players you need around 2.5gbs of RAM and an upload speed of 5mbps
You're right, no need to get angry though. I thought it might work out, lesson learned, we need a different hoster.

NITRAMTJ What your upload/download speed?
I'm not sure, I've seen the server download at 2 MB/s (not mbps) before. The VPS should be in a data center, so I imagine it has a similar upload speed.

Completely restarting the server now to see if that will help.

Just as a note I too have experience with assembly programming and am more familiar with the concepts of it and processor design than Nitramtj.
This, and he's probably better at teaching than me too.

I think it would be awesome if a petition was started asking them to create a server that was vanilla. I'm sure it's possible, we'd just need to prove that enough players would play on it.

I'm honestly thinking about drafting one up.
I honestly wouldn't play it, it was a pretty big grind fest back then, the server would need a lot of people to make it feel natural.. It'd also be very expensive to maintain the two different codebases and it'd confuse newer players.

I'll just quote a guy from Facepunch.
He lists all of my points and more so.
I actually saw that earlier and noticed you were making very similar points.

I'm still going to reiterate my point about who cares if the game is 'finished' or not. That's just a tag in a repository, what matters is that it has enough gameplay to be fun and keeps you coming back.

You guys are going to pay a monthly fee for a multiplayer game that isnt even in alpha yet? LLL You do realize Notch still hasnt even finished Minecraft yet? He has also broke numerous promises to his community about features he'd add and saying multiple times things are impossible(Pistons and a few others I cant think of atm) later to be proven wrong by the modding community for him to pay them nothing and put them into the default game.
Minecraft isn't finished? Well it sure plays well enough for me not to care.

Of course I'm not going to pay for this monthly if it becomes a flunk, but the idea appeals widely to an EE/CS major such as me, and I'm sure it appeals to a bunch of others in the same boat. You're saying Notch's past is a reason not to trust him, but I think it is a reason to believe he can get something interesting done. He's got the experience of making multiple games, and he's been able to make Minecraft fun and interesting (who cares if it's "finished" if we have that.)
