you're using your special interest as a scapegoat
if anything you learned about your special interest coincidentally when you began to do something that started alienating your friends and that's why you're losing them, not because of the special interest itself
i know tons of people who have really weird-ass special interestes and only ever bring them up when it comes up as a goofy conversation topic, and nobody really minds (mostly because of the fact they're so forgetin goofy- it's hard to take 'being into girls who have fishnets and a missing leg'* seriously) so logically the special interest itself can't be the issue unless you're, like, mentioning to all your friends that you can't stop picturing them with fishnets sans one leg or are trying to fap under the table whenever you talk to legless fishnet girls or something
*what's interesting is that the person who is into this is actually aloveual and also female, which really only makes the example even goofier

kaje made the models themselves
and by-and-large JVS was useful. integrated with events, neat sounds, neat animations, filled a niche where we needed it most, and it had a kickass modeler behind it to boot
