Correction; MOST guys are jerks.
I'd imagine it's because of one guy being a jerk and getting all the incredibly stupid and impressionable people (No offense) to think it's cool.

Wish granted, but you wonder why you wished for nothing.
I wish I had a functional 3-up block right above my head, and it was only visible, hittable, and solid (Same for the starman too) to me, and it was just within jumping reach.

Anyways. The SCALE of any object or plane (In this case, plane) is how big it is in comparison to a 1x1x1 brick. (I think.) So, if you were to have a plane of water at 1 x 1 x 1 would make it a 1x1 tile, whereas a 32 x 32 x 32 would be a large brick of 32 blocks long, 32 blocks wide, and 32 tiles tall. Hence, 32(X) x 32(Y) x 32(Z).
Get it now?
