Security, testing the integrity of the server, etc.
Care to elaborate on this? What specific tasks are you going to perform using which tools/utilities?

I'm not going to read the post because you have not read the topic yet and are therefore uninformed.
I read the OP, that's enough to know the entire topic is wrong.

I'm not going to read the topic because it's obvious there's a lack of knowledge in here, the OP completely failed to understand the context of the discussion surrounding the post he cherrypicked that quote from and has taken my words completely out of context. At no point did I say my service would offer 100% uptime, even though it is realistic (I've been monitoring a server in the same rack as mine for 6 months and its had 100% uptime). The discussion was about premium providers vs budget providers and how if you're operating a business, 100% uptime is important but expensive to achieve. When you're operating a transactional website, downtime means you're losing money so putting measures in place to have 100% uptime in a facility is what makes premium providers expensive and worth the money you pay. The level of redundancy a hosting facility has is certified by the Uptime Institute (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Uptime_Institute) and typically the higher the certification, the higher the cost of that facility/provider. Good providers also have SLAs (service level agreements) on 100% uptime - if your site goes down and it's their fault, they will refund the cost of your service on a pro-rata basis depending on the duration of service interruption, this could be thousands of dollars for big customers, even for the smallest amounts of downtime.

If you're interested to know anything more about this topic, feel free to shoot me a PM or look it up on Google, don't just twist my words and make a dramatic topic about it, that's not needed.

I think Glass himself is paying for the server and he's only using his father as a proxy to buy the server, as Glass is underage. I have no doubt that Glass will be able to handle this, and push comes to shove, Evar and I can pick up the bill until something is worked out.
Realistically though, would you? I doubt it. I agree, a hosting service is a nice project to work on, but wait until you have enough financial security to run it.

What if your dad suddenly decides he doesn't want to pay for the server anymore? Good luck with your service but trying to offer something to paying clients with no personal financial security sounds like a bad idea.

Industry is slow to respond to it's errors.
I'd disagree, IT is pretty cutting edge. We'll have to agree to disagree though.

Intel is overpriced yet is the industry standard. Industry knows nothing, clearly!

Rub I know you're smart, quit fail-trolling seriously it's not working.
Locking the thread is genuine advice, discussing service problems and billing concerns in public is not professional.

You also lose more money going with Intel, it's another one of those 'name brand' things. You can get AMD processors that are extremely similar to the one you plan on getting for less.
Everything is planned and priced, really, I appreciate the concern but don't worry yourself.

8 - core 2.7 Ghz AMD processor = 21.6 Ghz of processing.
4 - core 3.4 Ghz Intel processor = 13.6 Ghz of processing.
That's 8 billion more calculations per second.

Intel's architecture might be slightly faster than AMD architecture, but with how little Blockland normally demands it really is obsolete. You'll need more processing power altogether to host a large amount of servers.
Don't worry, plenty of research has been done and I'm confident my choice is the best option for how I want to run my service. I'm not trying to stuff 50 servers on a node to make the biggest profit out of 1 server, that only leads to quality issues.

By going into his thread and blatantly trashing his service. You're not as good as arguing as you are at trolling my friend.
If he had any sense he'd lock the thread, there's nothing that needs discussing there and all support and billing queries should be handled in private, obviously he just wants drama.
