Off Topic / It's My Birthday!
« on: January 24, 2024, 05:57:06 AM »
I turn 31 today! Yikes!

Later today I'm going to the local library to do a presentation about short films and believe it or not they're letting me screen the first two Block Wars prequels, so Blockland is once again breaching containment for unsuspecting townsfolk.

Wish me luck!

Like, there’s a thousand things we might rightfully complain about but at least I don’t see ads for Blockland crossing over with Costco.

July 5th is a special day for me because it marks the day I signed up for the blockland forums in 2007 after finally buying retail.

I am 30 years old and I am still here; dear god.

Anyway, thanks for 16 years of the weirdest loving corner of the internet!

Add-Ons / [BRICK] Blockland in 2022
« on: April 20, 2022, 07:39:55 PM »
This brick is based on this post. I want it to be noted I spent no more than 20 minutes on this, it was for stuffs and gigs cause I thought Pomp's drawing was funny. Now you too can leave this statue behind as a reminder of who we once were, as a people...

My name is Ozymandias, king of kings; look on my words, ye mighty, and despair!

Gallery / [VIDEO] Behind the Bricks - First Episode is Out!
« on: December 30, 2021, 04:26:01 PM »

2022 marks the 15th year I've been playing this game, and I have a lot of projects in the works to show you! One of them is this: Behind the Bricks, a hybrid of dev-log and tutorial, behind the scenes and vlog, whatever buzzword and whatever buzzword.

I'll teach you tips and tricks that I use to make machinima (I know, finally), as well as show you a behind the scenes look at projects I'm working on as I work on them. Hope to see you in the new year!

This is one of my new projects in the new year because I firmly believe that despite everything, this game refuses to die and I will help its shambling corpse for as long as I can lol

Off Topic / Who here has played a year's worth of Blockland
« on: November 24, 2021, 03:26:50 PM »

While I know for a fact I have, as I've been playing since before the Steam version circa 2006, obviously Steam only counts from when I started using the Steam version.

But this got me wondering: does anyone have a year's worth on Steam? Can you prove it? Don't photoshop- fake internet cred isn't cool and winners don't use drugs.

Off Topic / Hot Take: Let's Players are Good Actually
« on: September 12, 2021, 05:10:56 PM »
YouTube Search: Game LP No Commentary. We've all been there. We've all tried to be one.

But I had this wild realization that only the old guard gamerstm would truly understand. Let's players have always been good.

It's cool to rag on the ol' Game Grumps or Markipliers for being tired sell-outs to the YouTube corporate regime but their content is, I think actually, wholesome.

As someone far too socially miscalculated as myself to actually watch some stream live knowing they can see my name in the chat- to be perceived at all? Let's Play give you that sense of internet community with a known and liked personality leading without any of the poggers or memes.

Don't get me wrong, streaming is a natural evolution of the art and it should continue moving forward as it has, but the LP community big hitters who still produce weekly to even daily comfort content for so many? Yeah, I give more of a stuff than I might have.

What are your thoughts?

General Discussion / Packer and Swholli Podcast
« on: August 24, 2020, 04:10:22 PM »

What's This?

Packer and I (yes that Packer) are combining our talents and starting a live-stream podcast where we'll talk about video games, nostalgia, video game related nostalgia, and just- yeah it's mostly about video games. We'll probably talk about some Blockland oldcigarette stuff at some point.

Oh and we're gonna try to play Conker Live and Reloaded's multiplayer on the original xbox (using original hardware, see this guide if you have the game and want to try and join. I'm pretty sue Xlink Kai also works with emulation software)

We're trying to do our first stream tonight. It'll be live on my main Youtube channel so you can subscribe to that if you haven't already to be updated. I'll also update this thread with a link once we go live. If we don't go live tonight I apologize in advance, we don't have set steaming schedule and he lives in Australia and I in the US so we're already stretching the limits of this as it is.

I made this topic because the BLF is basically our first internet stomping ground and there might be some of you who want to hear two guys in their late twenties talk about video games from 2005.

If this proves successful we'll do the usual, start a discord, get a PO box, give out our home addresses, you know.

General Discussion / Swholli: Biography of a Failure [BOOK]
« on: June 22, 2020, 11:49:13 AM »

Quote
I was asked to write this by Swholli. At first I thought he was taking the piss so I asked him why, and he said that he wanted to have his own 'Blockland story' or 'book' about what he did, like some other players have recently been doing. He told me he wanted it to be like a biography. In particular, he referenced Steve Job's recent book that he explained he had read. He said that a lot of his in-game inspiration for Blockland event computers was drawn from Apple. Even his last build looked unashamedly like the iMac G3 released by Apple in 1998 or so. He said, much like Job's book, he wanted it to be similar in that he didn't want to stop me from writing it my way and posting negative information. In saying that he did send me a tonne of links and snippets over email, some of which I lightly skimmed over due to them being too big. But for the most part I feel I did a good job by myself.
His reference to Steve Jobs perhaps vindicated the feeling that Swholli had an ego bigger than Blockland itself. It also reflected another aspect about him; his strange desire to build or create mock-realistic services, builds, and tools. Its as if Blockland was another reality for him. Another world to hide away in.
When I asked Swholli what he meant by the whole 'Steve Jobs book' deal, he said to me “I want a mock-book with the same vibes of his biography. In the world of Blockland, I think I may be fitting for someone who makes an interesting read.”
Someone asked me, why did you write this anyway? Privately, I like Swholli. I don't agree with how he acts (sorry Swhy haha) but I was a fan of his videos and his builds. When I was asked to help I felt honored (but I kinda expected it due to being somewhat close to him for a while). However I feel I should remain anonymous to the wider community, as after having read about Swholli and seem some recent topics about him I now realize a lot of people hold contempt for what he did. And I don't want to be dragged into it. To those of you who overheard me and Swholli on servers or know who I am, please have some respect for me and don't blurt it out.
Swholli and I spoke for pretty much all of November during 2011. Through email, on Skype, and over Steam. Even sometimes we had voice chats, though Swholli regularly shied out of them. At one point he got a cold and demanded I leave him alone, then later apologized and spammed my inbox with “<3 <3 <3 luv joo”. But over time, through both talking to him, being sent information, and conducting my own research, I actually had real fun doing this. So without further ramblings, I welcome fans and haters to the Blockland life of Swholli...

Games / [Video Review] Game of the Decade Announcement | Happy New Years!
« on: November 22, 2019, 07:11:08 AM »

Older vids

In what has become something of a tradition whenever I make new content, I always share it with the BLF as you guys were my first major audience.

This is technically my gaming channel that I started way back in 2010, but it was always plagued with inactivity and general mediocrity (as only a couple of high schoolers could bring you). I've decided to reboot it as I wanted to make videos about games again but I didn't really think it would fit the theme of my main channel where I still do movie reviews.

Hopefully you all enjoy! Also if you wanted to subscribe, well I'd just be tickled.

Off Topic / Blockland Gets Honorable Mention
« on: October 14, 2019, 03:58:17 PM »
We made it boys.

While doing some cleaning of the strategy guide section of my store, an employee showed me this exclusive redstone guide and I noticed the "& other building games."

I think to myself "is it there?"

Lo and beold:

We're in the official, unofficial guide.

Creativity / EndeavourQuest - The Webcomic
« on: August 08, 2019, 03:08:53 PM »

WHAT'S THIS?

Hey ya'll. Remember this stuff?

Or more importantly, do you remember all this stuff?

If you do, then you probably remember the universe of characters and stories Menen, NicktheSushi, and myself all created in those interactive forum adventures. We used to spend countless hours pouring over our own lore and mythology, crafting these stories with a lot of scope.

And every single one of them at some point was given up on.

Now the prevailing theory is the right mixture of silly or stupid user suggestions combined with too many IRL responsibilities meant maintaining a forum game was sort of hard to do unless you were Andrew Hussie.

For years now the "menenverse" as we dubbed it has laid dormant, with my futile attempt last year at rebooting it with Untrodden Undertaking lasting the least amount of pages out of all of them.

But yet still my creative spirit yearns to tell the story of this blonde boy and his werewolf companion, roaming the countryside beating up monsters and evil and- no I swear it is not an Adventure Time ripoff.

EndeavourQuest is made with an entirely new art style (while still trying to capture the impromptu aesthetic of the original sprites we used). I'm still experimenting and getting into the swing of the art style, but I've made 8 pages so far of my story and I've deemed it time to share it with some kind of audience, and I think BLF is worthy of being the first, as it was born here.

What makes this comic unique, to the spirit of adventure comics before it, I'm actually using a real tabletop rpg to decide what happens as I write the story. I am both GM and PC simultaneously and it's maddening (but fun). I don't know if I'm the first to try this idea, of course, but I'm sure it's not seen that often.

The system I'm using is entirely my own. It's called DERPS (Dungeon Endeavour Role Play System), you can find the unfinished player's guide here: http://swholli.com/derps/

I will be updating the system as I go and add mechanics as I need them (this webcomic is also a sort of playtesting in its own right). The system was derived from all the forum adventures we'd done before but refined to be a simple yet engaging system to play easy tabletop stories.

As for the webcomic, now that I've shared it with some people (not just the small discord server I have with Nick and Menen) I'm going to try and be good about keeping it updated. I should hopefully have a new page out every Friday starting tomorrow.

Any and all feedback is welcomed, I much rather engage with an audience as I make art than just sort of shout into the void and hope for the best.

CAN I HELP?

So actually you can. In the spirit of our old games, I'm totally down with folks creating their own OC's for this universe to be used as background characters or even NPCs depending on their skills and such (your name will appear under the comic page when I use your character giving you credit).

You can use either this old base which I will upscale for you:

Or the new base I'm using for the comic (you can also download the .fla if you're familar with Adobe Flash and want to create a vector file for me, you can send it back in .fla and I can import directly into the comic)

Note: I may take some liberties with your character in order to get the positions of items and such to fit within the proportions of the comic. The setting is high fantasy/steampunk tech, so be accordingly with what you design.

Small edit: If you want your character to be able to fight, these are the six major skills of the game:

Speed (SPE)
 - Your speed is how fast you move in or out of the battle. Any time you run away, run towards something, or who starts the battle is all decided by speed.
Strength (STR)
 - Your strength determines how hard you can hit, how hard you can swing a sword, or how hard you can pull back a bow. The higher this skill is, the higher the amount of damage you can deal.
Intelligence (INT)
 - Your intelligence skill determines how easy it is for you to learn new things, understand difficult puzzles, or figure out creative solutions to problems. Having a higher intelligence score makes you harder to confuse.
Ability (ABL)
 - Your ability is your physical prowess and endurance. The higher an ability score the easier you are to move swiftly around the battlefield, climb walls, or do daring jumps.
Personality (PER)
 - Your personality is how you present yourself to other sentient creatures. Your charm and charisma abilities are your personality.
Magic (MAG)
 - Magic is a specialty skill and not all characters will need to use it. At least one magic skill point is needed to do basic spells and more advanced spells will have their own requirements.

Don't get too crazy with these stats else I might have to nerf you a little. Don't worry about class or race stats if you don't feel like reading the player's guide I wrote, just give me some base stats and a weapon or two and I'll do the rest of the work for you.

OK COOL LET ME READ IT

This is page 1, all the other 7 pages are on here, but I will be updating only the website after this. I'll still post a link to this topic when a new page comes out, should you guys actually want to read it.

Forum Games / [100x70] Untrodden Undertaking - Back on my Bullstuff
« on: July 17, 2018, 08:22:25 PM »

Your name is Paige. You just started your summer vacation from school and your parents are away on business.

Your babysitter is a mean, old woman and she's locked you firmly in your room.

Behind you is your dresser and your autographed Bakshi poster (probably worth millions) your father lent you.

What shall we do?

COMBAT/ACTIONS

To play this game we're gonna keep things simple. When you initiate a command when in combat, or using a particular skill that isn't just walking/talking, I'll roll a d6 to conclude the outcome. We're going on the epic fail-epic win scale of rolls, as such:

6 - EPIC WIN: Your action succeeds better than you could imagine and you even do some bonus damage.
5 - WIN: Your action succeeds brilliantly, you deal some bonus damage but not as much as a 6.
4 - COOL: Things go well and you look cool doing it. No bonus damage.
3- MEH: Your action neither succeeds or fails, it just sort of happens. Still pretty good, but you probably won't deal as much damage.
2 - FAIL: Your action fails pretty badly, you even take a little damage as a result.
1 - EPIC FAIL: Every bad thing that could happen does happen and you take some heavy damage as a result.
