April Fools 2016 / Help Swholli go to the Moon

http://swholli.com/kickstarter/

Guys, if you know me, I don't normally do things like this. I don't like going on the internet and begging for money.

But ever since I was a little kid I've dreamed of going to the moon. Well, in 2024 NASA is going to make this a reality for me.

They said that if I could raise a goal of $1,000,000, I could buy a ticket on board their next manned mission to the moon. And I need your help to raise that money.

Every little bit counts, even if you can only give a small amount! The kickstarter I have hosted on my website closes today! Please PLEASE consider donating! Help make my dream come true.

How to Make Blockland Machinima! - PART 1: The Story

Ever wondered how to make those oh so interesting BL vids that get all the views? This is how!

Part 1: Story - Learn the ways of crafting an interesting experience that audiences will want to watch!

--

Recently, Mouse Droidz 21 sent me a PM asking if there was anything I could do to help him improve his skills in making blockland videos, and I realized that a comprehensive guide to making creative videos really doesn't exist, especially about making them in Blockland's engine. So I set out to create such a guide that everyone could benefit from.

I was originally going to keep the series specifically for Mouse Droidz first and was going to try to finish the rest of the series over the weekend, but I wasn't able to do that so now I figured I'd just share them all with you now, and update this post as parts 2 and 3 are released.

Obviously these aren't the only methods available, but I'm trying to distill it down so that Blockland users can better apply it to their videos.

If there's any questions anyone has, feel free to ask them- I'll do my best to answer everyone.

Off Topic / Blogland: My grandfather passed away last night
« on: February 02, 2016, 01:00:27 PM »
If you know me, you know I very rarely write personal stuff on here, but I just wanted to inform those of you who so kindly follow my stuff (my clan, Block Wars, my movie reviews, etc) of the reason why this week (and perhaps even next week) you might see a little less of me.

My grandfather, William Thompson, passed away last night at the age of 91. He had been suffering from dementia for at least a decade, and for the last 5 or 6 years he and my grandmother had moved in with me, my mother and my sister as we took care of them in their twilight years.

After some unfortunate circumstances (or if you believe in fate, then fate) he developed a urinary tract infection and slowly stopped eating solid foods until eventually he stopped eating foods at all. Though we tried to treat him, he wouldn't take his pills and of course, being as advanced an age as he was, an infection like this basically did him in. He died peacefully at five til six last night, February 1st. He had just celebrated his 91st birthday in December.

Basically, though I'm not saying you all should care just cause (I mean, I realize you didn't know him, that's ok), you should at least acknowledge his passing as if hadn't been for him you all wouldn't have me. I mean, unless you hate me, in which case I understand- please commence the throwing of the tomatoes.

What I really mean to say is, he was a man who shaped my sense of humor and creativity. He was a carpenter by trade and was always a man who worked with his hands, as such he's the one got me started playing with Legos in the first place (big duplo blocks- we used to build massive towers and sprawling cities in my living room whenever he came over to babysit). If not for this man I literally probably wouldn't be here talking to you all. He helped influence my childhood and became like a second father to me when my dad was busy at work (he's a blue collar man, works long hours, all that jazz).

Also, my name is Swholli, as in Scott William Hollingsworth. So that W forever immortalizes him even on these forums.

So, I just thought you'd all like to know the reason I'm not nearly as finished with Block Wars like I thought I would be a year ago. A great man has left this world, one who's energy and sense of humor I now very prudently carry with me. He very much helped shaped me into the person I am today. He was my childhood best friend who I spent more time with than I did kids my own age. He was just a kid himself who was unlucky enough to grow old.

In memory of William E. Thompson
12/19/1924 - 02/01/2016

Goodbye, old friend. May those dusty old country roads take you home.

Off Topic / Swholli Levels Up! (Morph-day Thread)

Alright guys, after a cycle of grinding I've been able to finally reach level 23 and I have no idea what skill to allocate my XP points to! You gotta help. Here's my character screen right now. I also have an option to learn a new skill, so if you think that's a better option, I'll take suggestions on which one.

Games / Swholli's Junk Trunk - Swholli Plays X-Files
« on: January 08, 2016, 02:12:22 PM »

Basically, unlike my movie reviews, Junk Trunk is a show that's whole purpose is to cull through all of the cheap, old, and horrible games I have that don't really belong in my collection.

As a game collector, you've gotta make a call what's worth putting it on your shelf and what belongs back in the Junk Trunk- but you can only do that if you actually play a game. So today we're gonna do that. For 43 straight minutes (congrats if you sit through it all).

If people like this I plan on making it a series because I get so many chances to buy or get junk games that I turn down because I'm "fiscally responsible" but if it's for Youtube I'll have no hesitation buying literal stuff.

Suggestions & Requests / Taking Requests for new Decals/Faces/Prints
« on: January 07, 2016, 01:39:35 PM »
Believe it or not, I started out my blockland career as a face and decals guy.

Admittedly they weren't always very good, but then sometimes they were:

I saw this guy make rounds back in the day.

Anyway, point is seeing as TheWorm hasn't been on the forums for nigh 4 years now, we haven't really had any decent, dedicated decal/face/print makers since him. He made packs upon packs of great faces and decals, which if you're unaware have become default the argyle sweater, for example.

I intend to change that by reclaiming the throne TheWorm left and taking my rightful place as the decal guy. I can't model, I hate scripting, but I'm good at this- this is my great contribution to Blockland.

tl;dr: I am now taking requests or suggestions for new decals to put in one all encompassing pack.

If you suggest something that is from a copyrighted work, it will be changed to some sort of parody of the original. I don't expect this pack to become the next default pack or anything, but in case badspot wants to I'm going to make sure it won't get anyone sued.

I'll post periodic updates based on which decals and faces I get finished.

Off Topic / Star Wars Episode 7 Reactions (WILL CONTAIN SPOILERS)
« on: December 18, 2015, 12:12:50 AM »
Unlike any other thread, this is a thread is specifically only for those who have seen the film, if you haven't yet and you want to avoid dem spoilers, get out now.

Do you ever want something so badly and then when you get it you have no idea how to react to it?

Well that's how I'm feeling about Star Wars right now. And it's not even because Han died or that Kylo Ren is his son.

No, what left me feeling really weirdly disappointed was just how much this film ungracefully borrowed from other Star Wars without even the satisfaction of a better explanation than "well, it's what's supposed to be there." Plus all the loving coincidences of plot convenience.

Like, why was the Falcon just so happened to be on Jakku for Finn and Rey to find? Why did Finn out of all the other stormtroopers decide right then and there he was done being a stormtrooper on his first outing as a stormtrooper? How did Finn mistake Han and Chewie's freighter as the New Order's ship other than so we could have a "dramatic" Han Solo reveal? Why did Kylo Ren stop a blaster bolt with the Force? How did Rey learn out of now where what a Jedi mindtrick was if literally a few scenes earlier she was questioning if the Jedi were even real? Why did R2D2 just so happen to wake up at the exact right moment to complete the map to Luke as soon as the Starkiller base was destroyed? How did Rey just close her eyes and decide to start "using the force" to beat Kylo in a saber duel when she has had no formal saber training at all and even if Kylo was an unskilled force user, he still had more training than her and should have still easily beaten her cause she's never touched a lightsaber in her life?

Why was Kylo Ren made to be a badass in one scene and then totally throw a hissy fit twice in the movie when things don't go his way and yet he's supposed to be our new Darth Vader?

Why did they literally just do a not as tight version of the plot to Episode 4?

Like, I loved the characters a lot and the dialog was pretty great (mostly) but like, I just don't know how to loving feel yet.

Was it better than the prequels? Yeah, sure, obviously. But was it as good a movie as it should have been with all the things it had going for it? I just can't tell.

I'm planning on seeing it again on Saturday. I'll let you know how I feel about it after digesting it without as much hype or cynicism to go with it.

Help / Active a new key on old account on steam?
« on: December 06, 2015, 12:06:01 AM »
Asking for a friend.

If someone purchases a new key and ID, but wants to tie it with an existing steam client (that was already tied to an older key that is banned), is that possible?

And if so, how? Anyone who might have experience with this and/or badspot if he's lurking in this thread, help is appreciated.

Merry Christmas! Here's a link to the download if you want to include this track in your Christmas playlist!

Download This Shizz

You might remember that four years ago I made this:

It's Beginning to Look A Lot like Blockland (preview)

Well that really got dated now as it's been exactly four years (on the dot, strangely enough) since I uploaded it, and I figured since the season is close by I'd polish this up and actually finish it. This is apparently the season for finishing projects I worked on years and years ago.

Also, yes I'm fully aware it's not Thanksgiving yet, I just figured I'd releases this early and let it simmer as it rides out the holiday season to maximize its view count.

It's Beginning to Look A Lot like Blockland

Also, this is my new channel for Blockland related things, and that includes any and all future updates on Block Wars, so if you want to see more of my Blockland related work and are only subscribed to my main channel, you should totes subscribe to SwholliBL.

Also, feel free to rate, I guess. If anyone even asks that any more.

Modification Help / Block Wars Modification Contest
« on: October 30, 2015, 01:46:43 PM »

Modification Contest

Block Wars is nearing its completion (December mother forgeters, we're serious about that) but I'm in a bit of pickle, so being the last running community project ever (not a forum game), I figured I'd ask to community for help.

What the contest is

As you're probably all aware of, in Star Wars there's a famous scene that takes place in the Mos Eisley Cantina:

And in that scene there are forget-ton of aliens. Now of course I could just do decals for all of these aliens, but personally I don't think that's as fun, so I'm coming to blockland's modification community for help in creating some cool head models/player types.

What I want you to do

If you are a modder, or even just a 3d artist, who's interested in helping, all I need you to do is create an alien for me. It can be as simple as a head that a blockhead can wear, or a full playertype conversion that changes the whole player. The difficulty is up to you.

The best part is that, since this is a comedy movie, the choice of what you create is up to you. If you want to be a purist and recreate something that already exists in the movie, go for it, and if you want to go wild and model an alien who's made entirely of bananas, that's cool too.

These are minor backgrounds characters who will only be featured for a few scenes, so this is your chance to hide as many easter eggs into Block Wars as you want.

How long do you have?

Well, given that I know making mods and models can be somewhat time consuming, especially since I can't ask you to make this a priority, I'm willing to give you as much time as possible.

The deadline, then, will be Star Wars 7's release date, December 18th. That should give you all of November and some of December to make your mod.

How is it chosen and what's the prize?

The winner will be chosen by the members of the forums. All you have to do to enter is present your mod in a screenshot and then post that here to the forum.

On the 18th the contest will be officially closed and all applications will be made into poll options in this topic, where we'll all be able to vote on our favorites (probably up to 3).

The winners (I'll probably chose up to ten to be background characters) will get their addons in the film, as well as be given a credit in the films credits.

However, the person who gets the most votes will receive a specialized prize from me and the talents I can do for you. Maybe a personalized ring tone (or anything else pertaining to voice acting that I can do for you) some sort of art (or anything art related I can do for you) or really anything you can think of that you'd want from me (within reason of being able to do it) I'll do it for the winner.

Or, if all else fails and you don't want any of that stuff, I'll gladly gift you a Steam game worth 20 dollars or less. So really it'll be up to you the kind of prize you'd like to receive.

Conclusion

So, the contest is now officially open! I hope you all can come up with some interesting concepts and I look forward to seeing your results and will be eternally grateful that you've assisted me in creating my goofy Star Wars movie.

A Short Clan History

Formerly, I was put in charge of Darkstar's now defunct but highly popular film making clan, BEE (Block Eye Entertainment). Myself and others were having talks about the idea of rebooting the clan to its former glory, even so far as to ask Dark himself about the idea (though he did give me to go ahead). However, we realized we needed something different than just bringing BEE back from the dead. We needed a handle for this new generation of videos being produced by the old generation of videomakers.

Blockland Classics was born during a conversation we were having on the set of Block Wars. While talking about how many of the old Blockland machinimas (including the original Block Wars) were an influence to many new players having actually bought the game in the first place, we realized that the art of video making in Blockland was now sorely lacking. Blockland is one of our favorite sandbox games and it can allow for some serious creativity, as such we agreed someone should bring about a renaissance of the craft to inspire those like we were then to create. We decided we needed to return to the "classics."

Who are we?

We are filmmakers and artists, builders and designers, eventers and modders. We acknowledge Blockland's limitations and we view them as a challenge to still make something great despite its age. Blockland has soul and edge and is retro in its own right. We realize that there are kids just as young as we once were now embarking to be the next genration of players of this game, and we want to encourage them to produce quality art if they want to, and we're going to show them that it's possible, even in a game that's 10 years old.

Members

Note: Right now I'm only 100% positive of one member joining us for sure, if you were there in the conversation we had on the Block Wars set and do in fact want to join the clan, all you have to do is contact me and I'll add your name. Also I'm extending that to any and all former BEE members, you can join without an application process, simply message me with proof you were once apart of BEE and you're in.

General Discussion / Block Wars Teaser Trailer #2
« on: October 02, 2015, 11:59:38 PM »

This is a second post for those of you who don't frequent community projects often and might not have been aware that the loving HYPE TRAIN IS STILL ROLLING.

The film that was Dugg by Badspot and even posted on the front page of Blockland.us is back, and better than ever. Completely remade from the ground up in v21 (or whatever it's called these days) to utilize all of Blockland's potential and engine power to create a stunning and visually interesting parody of the beloved film, Star Wars Episode IV: A New Hope.

This is Block Wars Episode IV: No Hope! Coming soon!

This time I did not disappoint with my trailer shenanigans, and thus I showed you even less footage than the first time!

But episode 7 trailer parodies count, right? It's what you all wanted the first trailer to be.

Also this is the first time I've announced in a trailer the official release! I'm aiming to get this sucker out the same time the actual Star Wars is out for relevancy.
