Creativity / Writing Megathread - Swholli's Creative Writing
« on: July 14, 2015, 01:45:22 AM »
As far as I can tell there's only been one of these so far and it tanked, so I'm rebooting the idea.

Writing Megathread!

Hey! Do you like to write? Do you write short stories and want positive constructive feedbacktotal destruction of your ego?

Then this is the thread for you!

I was tempted to make this thread for two reasons: one, Hodot and I were talking about writing and stuff and it inspired me to make the following site:

Which is just a collection of my creative writings as of the last year or two. These are the stories I've actually taken the time to write down (considering I'm constantly thinking of new story ideas) though none of them are finished completely. The longest story is as of now 21,524 words long and three chapters.

Basically, I've only shown a handful of people these writings, but I figured I might as well let you all see them, because you're all harsh, inconsiderate starfishs with your opinions, and sometimes those are the best opinions to hear when you want to better something creatively.

Secondly I made this topic because I figured, why only let me get to show off my writings? Why not let everyone post stuff and we can all talk about it together. Considering I'm currently studying the art as a career (if you actually remember the times I've talked about my schooling, yes, I really have changed majors this many times), maybe I can even give you a more concise critique of your story than if you asked, say, your mom or your middle school English teacher.

So, yeah, go ahead and write stuff or just trash on my writings, either way, I declare this thread open.

How to share your writings with us

If your writing is too long to just post here on the forums, you can use a site like pastebin or piratepad, or you can share your stories directly from Google Docs (which I think it the best method because it has its own built in spell checker and other word processor tools), so that any edits to your stories can be done in real time!

If you're going to use Google Docs and have never known about the publishing feature, this is a quick step by step guide.

First, locate the top bar of your document.

Then, bring down file:

Go to File > Publish to Web

This will generate a link for you that will stay constantly up to date on all the edits you make, simply copy it and post it here.

Creativity / Endeavour Sprites - Mega Art Update
« on: June 22, 2015, 02:54:11 AM »
So I guess I want to put these here because I've been working on them on and off for a bit and I figured I'd show you all.

I'm still bitter about the fact that Nick, Menen, or myself were never able to finish an adventure in Supreme Guy's quirky Endeavor-verse.

So I'm always trying to concoct new ways to bring back my favorite characters that were created on a whim because Menen didn't get into Mining Endeavour.

One of the major problems with the sprites themselves is, why they worked well for the retro-style pixel art they were, and obviously were easy to manipulate quickly. They lacked the ability to poses minute expressions, and thus made the panels we created far more dialog heavy than they probably needed to be, just to show the emotion of a character, instead of letting the character do it.

So, after toiling with the idea and concept art of taking an image no bigger than 20px by 20px, and making it blown the forget up.

Thus, I give you Endeavour v3 (cause I used v2 already):

I went through a few versions of these character models, and right now I only have Menen and Marc.

They're made entirely in Adobe Flash now, completely vector based so scaling indefinitely is possible. They're animatable if need be, and they're able to be colored and tinted and shaded to fit in to any sort of environment with lighting in it.

So now, I guess what I'm asking, aside from just posting it here, if you were somone who used to enjoy the continuing adventures of Menen and Marc and their daring do-gooding in a magical land of urban gnomes and hipster werewolves- would you like to see us try one last time at an adventure topic?

I've been mulling over it, and it's not something I'd just jump into right away, all of the assets would have to be pre-made in order to sustain the kind of interactivity the topics used to have. The story itself would be loose but be at least stringed together from the beginning so as to not lose sight of where the plot is headed.

Menen and I have been discussing this greatly, and he wants to do a regular comic, and that might be what we ultimately do (we're so obsessed with these characters we're constantly creating stories for them). But I still want to believe an adventure topic can be mustered for old time's sake.

I'm asking you, the creativity board community, if you or someone you know who browses the forums remembers the old times, answer the poll. If you demand it enough, it might motivate us to do it again.

And if not, that's cool. I got to show you what I've been working on at least.

Written Reviews on a Blog

Metal Gear Solid V is out! I'm not done with it yet, but here's what I think so far...

Though Metal Gear Solid V was just released to the public yesterday, and I'm no where near finished with it, I decided to give my first reaction thoughts so I could compare how I feel after finishing it later (and also because I really wanna talk about Metal Gear).

I saw the Avengers last night and wanted to review it without making a whole video.

If you like to read my words as much as hear me speak them, then this blog is the place for that.

Why make a mega thread about your own channel?

Well, to put it plainly, I'm tired of making a new topic every time we make a new game review or let's play or whatever, so I decided to just do this.

The Suave Zouaves is a channel I started four years ago with my friend Dylan King, and we've been making videos on and off about games for some time. Most recently, we've started a new Let's Play series that was inspired by the likes of Game Grumps and I wanted to share that with you all.

Suave Zouaves' Split Screen

What's this? - Basically it's the same format of the ever popular Game Grumps, but isn't a direct rip-off, because it's all just LP's and frankly I don't even remember who the first LPer was, so technically we're all copying off of whoever that was.

My thought process was, besides the Grumps, there aren't really any LPers on Youtube that are truly dedicated to old school console games. Pew Dee Pie, Markiplier, whoever else is popular, they all play modern PC games for the most part, I wanted to distance myself from that because everybody does that. There needs to be more old console games being played because reliving those childhood memories is a blast.

New episodes Mon-Fri garenteed.

Classic Game Reviews

What's this? - The title pretty much says it all. Technically, we've been around old school reviews since way before the Angry Video Game Nerd, he's just who made them popular. That and Dylan's Brother, and ancient relic of the internet days who never did make it big, used to trade games through the mail with his internet friend James Rolfe. Aka the Nerd. So we've got seniority rights here.

This is the seventh consecutive birthday spent active on the Blockland Forums.

I'll probably be turning 32 in ten years and still posting about it (assuming this game still exists). So hoorah.

General Discussion / Block Wars Teaser Trailer
« on: January 20, 2015, 03:32:56 PM »

This is a post for those of you who don't frequent community projects often and might not have been aware of the current progress on the reboot of the film, so I'll just leave this here for you!

The film that was Dugg by Badspot and even posted on the front page of Blockland.us is back, and better than ever. Completely remade from the ground up in v21 (or whatever it's called these days) to utilize all of Blockland's potential and engine power to create a stunning and visually interesting parody of the beloved film, Star Wars Episode IV: A New Hope.

This is Block Wars Episode IV: No Hope! Coming soon!

New Suave Zouaves game review!

After literally a year of hiatus, we finally decided to get together again and review a new clunker of a game, E.T. Interplanetary Mission for PS1 (and no, it's actually not the infamous one, it's a new one).

General Discussion / Block Wars - Locked: See New Topic for Sequel
« on: December 28, 2014, 11:44:06 PM »

After much diliberation I've decided to go a day early on my claims (to make up for how long I delayed instead in the past)

I present to those of you who weren't in the stream:

A long time ago, in a galaxy far, far away...

BLOCK WARS! The major motion picture event of Blockland machinima is finally here! After a decade of waiting, the video is out! Adventure! Laughs! Romance! Block Wars!

Director and Cast commentaries are available here: http://blockwars.swholli.com/commentary/

In the event this video is continually flagged by Youtube and viewing becomes impossible, you can watch the film in it's entirety here: http://blockwars.swholli.com/videos/bwfinal.htm

Livestream Schedule
Monday, May 2nd

6:00 PM (EST) - Server officially opens and twitch stream begins. Allows time for premiere guests to filter in and for those looking to stay for the duration of the stream can get here early to not lose out.

7:00 PM (EST) - Premiere. Block Wars is officially released to an audience after nine years.

8:00 PM (EST) - Post-screening Q&A session. Just general chitchat pertaining to the film. Can be cut short if not that many questions are raised.

9:00 PM and beyond (EST) The wrap party begins as we celebrate the release. Music (as DJ'd by me) will be played through the stream so it's suggested you leave it open to partake in song requests and general merriment.

The server is hosted by graciously by Pecon's Blocknet hosting service.

Block Wars - Official Trailer (2016)

rofl i bet you any money that movie will be a fail

GL with block wars =]

If you weren't aware, I announced some days ago that production Block Wars has been officially reopened. At least, publicly.

In reality, the third (and hopefully final) incarnation of Block Wars has been in my head and on and off being put together by myself and Packer for a few months now, it wasn't until I saw a recent post here on the forums where a user said that Block Wars is what cause him/her to start playing the game in the first place.

Immediately I was floored and thought to myself: "Swholli, you're 22 now. It's time to buckle down and finish this god damned thing, and finish it right."

So everything previously has been scrapped (except for most of the script, which was salvaged and retooled as a more mature writer) and I've decided to start completely over.

So, basically, if you'd like to contribute to this, pay attention to the server status for when I have Blue Harvest up and running. It will be passworded, so PM me with some credentials (I need players willing to follow instruction, no more main stream riff raff like before).

Hopefully, with your help and my already budding team, we'll actually be able to put this forgeter to bed.

...

And then I can make Empire Strikes Back...

I mean, seriously what.

So if you saw Creativity a few days ago, you'll probably have seen I made a Game Grumps Animated. Well that was fine and dandy and it's gotten almost to 1k views, which is pretty solid in only a few days, I'm used to some bigger viewed Youtube videos.

But I also uploaded it to Newgrounds, being it was a flash animation.

On November 20th, of all the submissions to the portal that day, there was a Top 5 taken and I was 5'th overall. I'm freaking out.

I know it's, like, not a terribly big deal after all. I mean I didn't get front page or daily 1st or any of that really big stuff, but I still placed. And I have never, ever done that.

Like you don't understand, the 13 year old me is pumped as stuff, ok?

Thought I'd share it with you lovely bunch.

Spent most of this evening making it (not incredibly hard given it was only 30 seconds of audio), thought it turned out pretty good. It came from their Sonic Boom playthrough's first episode.

Not sure why max resolution is only 480p, but it doesn't make it hard to see what's in the video, so I'll worry about that next time I render something.

Insidious Sucked - Swholloween Special Review

Remember Insidious? That stupid loving movie that gave away it's scariest moments in the trailer?

Yeah, well, in order to get into the Halloween spirit I decided to review these two pieces of garbage.

Looks like I got this video just out in time for Halloween. I guess that means I can worry about next months big holiday review.

What’s even in November? Well, I suppose its election month, I could always do a political movie. Or perhaps Veterans Day, there are so many terrible war movies to watch.

Or maybe....

Oh no.

The Fault in The Fault in our Stars Review

Don't worry, you don't actually have to think. You put the movie in front of your face but you don't let it do the storytelling. It's a metaphor.

A METAPHOR FOR REALLY STUPID.

Pain demands to be felt. And bad movies demand to be watched.

This time I tried some new things to fix the problems people had with the last one. Less dead air visuals (black screen only) and a structured review style (numbered points).

God's Not Dead (The Super Long Review Edition)

If you can sit through 40 minutes of me rambling about a really terrible film, then this is the video for you.

It started out as a short idea, but soon turned into a long brown townysis of the film, and in case you’re wondering, it’s entirely about the plot, story, and characters. I don’t even dispute the arguments made in this film (I do give them counter arguments, but this is not a review to bash faith or Christianity, this is a review to bash this terrible movie that happened to be about faith and Christianity).

This is a Lifetime movie that got a Hollywood budget and is as melodramatic cheesy as only the warm-and-fuzzy-religious media can provide.

This took a couple of days to edit as it started out as a ten minute ordeal and quickly turned into this. Holy stuff.

If you don't really care about the whole story side of things and only want to see where I dismantle the films tired rhetoric, skip to this part of the review.

Off Topic / Garfield's Dead
« on: July 31, 2014, 10:31:00 PM »

I may star doing this again, though not nearly as often (daily felt like a chore and I don't want art to feel like a chore).

So about a year ago I was reading the Sunday paper for the first time in like, three years, and as per usual I quickly moved directly to the comics.

I read through some dull and mercilessly awful stuff, but I trekked on the to the bottom to find my favorite strip since I was a wee lad, Garfield. Garfield would never let me down. He was America's fat cat, the lasagna lover, Monday hater, overweight super star cat. How could Garfield ever be bad? I made my way down the page to the bottom and soaked in that orange feline taste.

And it was bland and horrible and I hated it.

I never looked back on it, and have honestly not read a Garfield strip since. But something struck me. Garfield was loving 34 years old. How in the forget?

Thus this comic was born, aka, how I suspected the daily Garfield strip was doing since I last read it:

That was August of last year. Somehow I stumbled upon my own comic just recently, and it hit me: this is a pretty decent idea for a parody strip about the state of syndicated comics these days. Who better to bring us laughs at his own expense once more than the great Garfield? Before you (or Jim Davis and his, I'm assuming, cat based lawyers) come down on me for originality, I simply say: this is fan-fiction.

So I present to you a (hopefully) series to come, Garfield's Dead:

PREVIOUS STRIPS:

CURRENT STRIP:

Suggestions for future strips and ideas are of course welcome, and before you say anything, yes the art style is very rushed, it's both sort of a stylistic choice as well as a time saver. I have thus named it guerrilla-comicing (a play on both the rushed and quick style as well as the aping of a beloved icon) Thank you, move along.

Forum Games / Dungeon Endeavour - Don ye sword (voting is complete)
« on: July 20, 2014, 03:48:33 AM »
Having believed to have learned my lessons with previous adventures, I think I finally have a good grasp on the elements needed to keep an adventure stable. That being said, let's give this one last go with:

What's this Bull?

The Endeavour series has become a flagship title in the depths of Community Project forum adventures, ranging from a mining adventure, to an RPG, to my failed space series, and even spawning the very successful (albeit dismayed these days) Menen-verse series (MSMM, CC, Deadrock and Chivalry).

Supreme Guy's contribution to the Blockland forum adventure realm is a very strong presence. But there hasn't been an Endeavour to fully see itself to completion. I intend to change that.

Using the Deadrock RPG system (I've described it as DnDlite) I wrote back in the day, and mixed-mashed DnD elements, this is Dungeon Endeavour. Four heroes (user generated as usual) will embark on a quest to find the greatest riches imaginable in this simple, yet very enjoyable dungeon crawler. No complex and needless story line, no over-zealous sense of seriousness, no complex character and world building. Just good ol' dungeon glory.

The goal is to collect treasure. Make it through all 50 levels of the dungeon, and make it out alive. The person at the end of the story to have the most gold is the winner. That's it.

I'll be designing the dungeons, and using a little bit of Rogue like randomness (i.e. rolling a die to see where to place enemies and traps and such), will be setting up a quest for loot. The play is as simple as always, four of you design a character, we'll vote to see which four get to go on the quest, and then every forum member has access to the controls of these four heroes (their respected creators having first say, of course) as they embark on this great quest.

Such an occasion requires a great upgrade. Please allow me to introduce for the first time:

Endeavour v2

Choose a race
Choose a class

Warrior - includes fighters, paladins and rangers

Wizard - includes mages

Priest - includes clerics and druids

Rogue - includes thieves and bards

If you hadn't noticed above in the example screens, the endeavour sprites have gotten an overhaul. Gone are the days of tiny limbs, expressionless sprites, and amputees (WE HAVE ARMS).

Each race has his or her own natural ability, so keep them in mind when choosing. A human will have natural speed over his counterparts, allowing him to move more spaces per turn. The drawf will have a natural strength, giving him more hit points even at his lowest level. The elf has a natural talent for magic; if he has spells to use, his will be more powerful right out of the box. An orc's massive size grants him a strength bonus too, however his comes in the form of heavy weaponry; where other characters will fail to pick up large items, the orc grabs them with ease.

The classes speak for themselves (weaponry, magic, healer, stealth).

The rest of the designing (clothing and weapons and such) are up to you. Be careful on what sorts of these you give your character, I may have to nerf some stuff if you start out too powerful.

Our Party:

Traeg the Orc Engineer

Name: Traeg
Class: Warrior/Tinkerer

He's the Orc with a knack for inventions. A talented tinkerer who uses his mechanical mindset to build incredible devices. His weapon of choice is a (Magic) Rocket Powered War Axe.

Orc Priest

Name: Orc Priest (?)
Class: Priest

Appears slow and weak, wearing tattered robes over light armor which is probably in similar condition. Carries an axe as a priest's staff. It's probably magic. Nobody can clearly see his face, which is half covered by what looks like an armored mask, and half covered by the hood.

Maverick, The Alchemist

Name: Maverick
Class: Wizard

He's a cousin of the Master Thief Marcus, exiled into this dungeon from a distant land for using prohibited alchemical practices... Or perhaps fake alchemy. His arm relic doesn't use transmutation at all. The only "alchemy" he could do is make potions.

Elli Kurzmann

Name: Elli Kurzmann
Class: Rogue (thief/bard variant)

A charming young lady who grew up in the lower class, she uses her intelligence and friendly looks to score quick cash off of those more well-off than her. She also carries a knife, so if her con doesn't work, she can rob them. She is a nimble woman and relies on dealing quick damage and getting out fast, should she have to fight.
Her choice of attire is usually accentuated by a scruffy overcoat and scarf.

Off Topic / Blocklander's in the Chicago area, I need your help!
« on: March 19, 2014, 04:07:58 PM »
Note: I'm not proposing a meetup, sadly, this is a romantic vacation with my fiancee and we're not planning on seeing anyone but each other (biblically).

Hey there peeps.

So my spring break is this coming week and the fiancee and I are going to be taking a scenic trip on the Amtrack trains from Toledo, OH to the windy city itself, Chicago, IL. We'll be staying at a lovely hotel in the city so we're wondering if there's anything worth spending our time doing as well have roughly a day and three quarters of time spent there, so we don't want to be bored between massive love romps.

Besides the obvious stuff like The Bean or Sears Tower of course, as everyone in America knows that stuff. I'm wondering if there are any inexpensive/free and fun things to do in the city that natives would recommend. If you all remember I am 21 now, so nothing is off limits.

Thanks for the help in advance!

Love and kisses,
Swholli
