Off Topic / Popsicle Sticks, Hot Glue and Giant Robots
« on: February 17, 2014, 05:01:29 AM »
Hey there kids, it's your ol' pal Swholli doing another dumb thing that he does when he gets bored at 4 in the morning because he has insomnia and ADHD!

SO.

Have you ever wanted to have your very own giant robot? Me too. I wish we could have that stuff right this loving second. I'd get in that forgeter and plow my way to the moon then romp around on some Godzilla-looking mofo's skull.

Well sadly we don't have those. And for those of you wondering, no, I do not have the time, the resources, the space, or the energy to create an actual 1:1 scale model of a giant robot out of popsicle sticks.

Though if I were an installation artist, I'd totally do that.

So anyway, this is a weekly (i.e. whenever the forget I feel like it) series that's part "look what I did" and part "you can do it too!"

The goal was to find whatever useless materials I had lying around and construct a stop motion (maybe) giant robot model/puppet for $0 (aside from the cost of having bought these materials at some point, though if you were to go out and start with nothing, these items literally cost mere dollars for packs of hundreds).

Let's see what happened!

UPDATE ONE

So today I decided to start with the abdomen chassis of my giant robot and get a good start on the scale of the beast.

First, like everything, we must draw out our plan ahead of time else be lost to not knowing what to do:

Pretty good looking body. A bit rough but the fun of adding the details is actually done without knowing so we've got a good plan.

First start by creating "plates" of the armor out of popsicle sticks. Create a frame with the sticks, then cover them with something thin and unbroken. I chose to use some cardstock I had lying around from an old phone number rolodex. Glue the sheets of flat material onto the stick frame on both sides and keep building and covering pieces like this. Think of it like making a papercraft except far more bulky but also sturdier.

Next I created the chest block (power source thingy for my robo). Here I used a box frame of sticks and like before, covered the frame with the cardstock. Then using perpendicularly lined sticks I created a vent or ridged like texture on the front. Doing little details like this will help sell the overall believability of your giant robot.

Now because this is a project where pieces get attached to each other, it would be very hard to paint all the nooks and crannies of the model if I waited until it was constructed, so I started painting right away. Here I added a flat black spray paint.

Once it was halfway done drying, I sprayed a metallic spray paint into a puddle on a piece of paper and, with a brush, delicately touched on the edges of the piece. I had available an aged copper look, but if you want yours to look more like steel you'll want a spray paint called chrome or silver or something like that.

Then using an old paper towel roll (sprayed directly with the copper) and a translucent red folder I cut out and put together this little chest piece. I left the bottom open for me to get into in case I decide later I want to get really fancy and put some small LED lights in there for extra effect.

Now I've got my two symmetrical chest pieces, seemingly the pectorals of my robot, ready to be painted. For this one I want them to look like they were metal that got painted over.

In order to do that you must first paint the pieces with the metal paint. While they're still wet, use a harder brush and stroke up and down on the paint to add strokes to the paint. This adds a brushed texture and makes them look that much more metallic and not cardstock.

Next, after the metal paint is halfway dried, apply your top coat of whatever color you wanted your robot to be before it got some battle damage to peel the paint. If you're creating a robot that's fresh out of the assembly line skip these steps, but otherwise make sure you paint near the middle leaving the metal edges exposed. Paint in the same direction you did your brush strokes from before to really seal the deal that this is painted metal.

If you want some extra battle scarring you can take a tooth pick or something sharp and scratch the wet paint to reveal the semi-dry paint underneath. The scratches are great touches and really add to the realism. Also, you can take some black spray paint and hold it about a foot away from your pieces and spray a few spots here and there to simulate explosion (or fire or laser) damage.

Always size stuff up as you go along because when you're still just working with popsicle sticks, you can alter that stuff if need be. Hot glue is very forgiving as the gun can remelt even previously applied glue. You can change and alter anything while still creating a pretty sturdy 3D object.

A better example of how to create the brushed metal look using only wet spray paint and a thicker bristled brush.

As you can see, when you stay in the center and brush out the paint as evenly as you can while following your first strokes, you'll get these nice splotches that look like the metal's paint is starting to peel and corrode due to it being used so often.

Constantly find new things you have lying around. With the painting methods I showed you, anything can look like metal and the more shapes the more interesting (and the more we'll believe it has real working parts) inside.

Protip: take a few colors of pipe cleaners, twist them so they're braided around each other then wrap those bad boys up tight with electrical tape, then using an exacto or box cutter or some sharp object, carefully scratch open parts of the tape to reveal the colored "wires" inside. It makes for a great frayed wire look and adds to the battle damage motif.

And there's this weeks finished build as of now. In the upper right is the shoulder guard that will house the arm socket once I start designing those (I haven't done the left arm's yet because it's six o'clock and I'm finally starting to feel tired, hooray no university for presidents day!).

So there you have it, stay tuned for the exciting continuation of the building a giant craft robot. If you've decided to follow along at home and are stuck at any point during your construction, leave a replay to this thread or if it's really drastic you can shoot me a PM and I'll gladly answer any and all questions and go into to detail about anything previously done.

Happy building (should you decide to, that is)!

Off Topic / Suggest The Worst Game Ever (and I'll play it drunk)
« on: January 23, 2014, 12:12:50 PM »

Attention all people's of the Blocklands and such.

If you are not aware (and I doubt you are) tomorrow is my 21st birthday; thus in conjunction with United States (and as well Ohio) laws, the age of majority is 21. This means that, upon tonight at midnight, I will legally be able to purchase for myself and consume without consequence, that ever allusive substance, alcohol!

Two quick notes to get out of the way now: 1, this is not my first time getting wasted (just legally) I was, after all, an American teenager, and 2, I am 6 foot, 230 pounds and have drank more than my share of alcoholic beverages and so I know for a fact I am not a light weight and can handle my liquor.

THAT MEANS THIS:

As per my celebratory inauguration into the true realms of adulthood and passing the final benchmark age, I feel the only way to celebrate is to make an absolute fool of myself for the entertainment of others. Either tomorrow, my birthday itself, or Saturday, I plan on purchasing as much alcohol as I can muster for a night (perhaps not black-out drunk, but at least enough so I can't piss straight) and play a strew of stuffty games.

So here's what I'm asking you fellows:

If you are of any age, please suggest the worst game you can remember playing. Don't worry about system or generation, chances are between myself and my friend Dylan we own practically every gaming console that has ever been produced, and if we don't have it, then by god we're going to emulate that bastard.

Only one to three games per suggester at first, so try to think of the worst of the worst. Assuming enough of you post, you should give me plenty of deliciously horrible choices. If games are suggested multiple times, they will be tallied and the one that's suggested the most will be played last (when I am absolutely drunker than all hell), and in that order. If a game is only suggested once, I will put it at the top of the list (to play more sober) in chronological with the order it's posted in. So if there's a game you want to see a drunk idiot play, you should make sure it gets enough suggestions, else I'll probably breeze through it with a shot and be on my way.

Now, those of you who are 21 or over in the states or age of majority in your country, I'm asking that you do the above but ALSO: suggest the worst (and best) drinks you've had in your life.

See, I've pretty much tasted every kind of liquor under the sun, I've just not tasted very many mixed drinks or different kinds of brands. I'm looking for pretty much what's interesting to drink. Whether it be so good you can't even taste how smashed you're getting, or so bad you wanna puke but you won't because of how smashed you're getting.

Basically, I want to produce a catch-all video (maybe even livestream) here-

  • I get loving drunk as hell
  • I play all sorts of horrible games and make fun of them (while drunk)
  • I try new and exotic drinks and rate how they taste (and you get to see the reactions I make)
  • Pretty much any time someone gets drunk it's comedy gold when you're sober

So get yourself suggesting, folks.

THE RULES:

There are rules to this game!

First, this experiment is clearly for science and posterity, so I have to be collecting some sort of data here. I'll play a bit of each of the games suggested (if I haven't already) and I'll give you my first impression, sobriety score (x/10) of how much I like it.

Then, once a few drinks are in me, I'll get cracking at the list again and I'll give you my drunk score (which will also account for how relatively drunk I feel, so that'll get an x/5 score, 0 being sober, 5 being blackout). Because of level of intoxication I might have to play a few of the early games later for more conclusive data.

A game will only be played drunk for as long as I can stand it. There is nothing that will make me have to complete a game, so remember that when you're suggesting it. If the reason a game is horrible is because it has a stuffty ending, then I don't want that sort of game on the list. I can only play a game for a maximum of twenty minutes or so, though, as there will (hopefully) be more games to get to.

If you suggest a drink, I'll give it a rating based on taste. By the end of this we should be able to compile Swholli's personal drinking menu and game list.

By the end of the night, assuming I haven't passed out, I will probably start up a Blockland server and give that a whirl too, because that's what this forum is all about anyway.

I'm not sure if I'm doing a livestream of these events yet, but should I choose to do so, you can add me on Skype (username Swholli as always) and I'll be sure to add you to the live conference call so you can all laugh at my absurdity.

Off Topic / Hey Blockland, I got Engaged
« on: December 27, 2013, 03:29:13 PM »
And why am I telling you guys? Because, forget it I dunno; I've been with you guys since before Baddy turned off the swear filter.

I spent a good portion of my later childhood here and its been that one "thing" that really gave me my proverbial 'sea legs' here on the ocean of web 2.0.

You know, I was telling my fianceé this earlier, it's weird when you're 14 and you join a forum like this and everyone else is 14 (except Bisjac) and the years go by and then you're 16 but not as many and the 18 and less and less and then you're 21 and you've got like thirty or so of us oldcigarettes (literally and metaphorically) and everyone else is still 14.

And its like, it still feels important to let you guys know. Like, this isnt just some birthday or blocklaniverrsay thread. This is a thing you tell the important people, and you guys are important in a large but different way in my life.

So yeah. I'm sort of one of those names on here you're probably familiar with (in days of old with my decals, or the infamy of Block Wars, my voice work either with Darkstar and BEE or my own stuff, or maybe just my participation with the Menenverse and those adventures) so I guess this is kind of something you might want to hear.

Her name is Loretta, she's a fantastic woman whom I've known for five years and have dated for a year and a half. She's funny and smart and well read. She's going to teach high school math and I'm going to teach high school English (also a life choice I haven't told you guys about, I've gone back to teaching just not history) and she's absolutely gorgeous. She's stolen my heart so now we're sharing a Netflix account. Soon a steam account and then we'll move in (oh and getting engaged was in there or something).

Tl;dr - swholli is getting married here in a couple of years and he loves you guys and her.

Forum Games / Menen and Marc VS The Space Mutants
« on: November 19, 2013, 02:53:35 AM »

What is this?

Menen and Marc VS The Space Mutants is a work in progress, feature length, animated, major motion picture from Swholli Productions (like that was actually thing). The same people who also (sort of) brought you Block Wars.

Menen and Marc are about to face their biggest challenge yet, space mutants.

2spooky4u.

I'd tell you more but the plot is really loose and nonpermanent, so bear with us on that we're in pre-production stages here.

Is this another Adventure?

No no, this has no fan interactivity whatsoever. Except maybe that you can decide when to pause the movie and go to the bathroom.

Then why is this in Community Projects?

Well, as you know, movies are not made overnight and they are certainly not made by just one person (at least, not usually and if they are, it takes a lot longer than what I have time for).

I'm asking you, the people of the forums, who enjoy the misadventures of Menen and his pals and their wacky highjinks, to lend a hand in the making of this film.

Consider this like a kick-starter except instead of money you donate your time.

Basically all we really need are vocal artists (or those close to that). If you think you've got a decent voice and aren't a child under the age of like, 15, then go ahead and submit an "audition tape."

Note, you must have a decent mic (not asking to have condensers here, just, if you're using your laptops built-in thing, sorry, no) and know how to do recording and sound editing. I don't want to edit your bloopers for you.

We're not really sure of the exact number of characters and thus parts we're going to have, and right now the voices of Menen and Marc are accounted for (UNLESS YOU CAN DO SOMETHING BETTER, IN WHICH CASE PROVE SO AND WILL USE YOU).

If you don't have recording software right this moment but you do have a mic and can download Audacity when we actually need you, but still want to audition right THE forget NOW, then you can just use http://vocaroo.com/

If you're a pixel artist or even an animator and want to contribute to the work so I don't have to do all of it myself, that'd be appreciated but not necessary. Pixels are pretty easy to move around "realistically" without too much thought, so animating is not difficult. With motion tweens (you say cheating, I say cheating but with style) and the fact that most of this stuff takes place from one angle and still looks convincing, it's not so bad.

Keep tabs on this topic for further updates and information, also yes I am still working on Chivalry too, don't worry.

Iv'e gone months without updating that before and you guys still read it, so don't gimme no lip.

Off Topic / Garfield's Dead
« on: November 01, 2013, 11:19:07 PM »

So about a year ago I was reading the Sunday paper for the first time in like, three years, and as per usual I quickly moved directly to the comics.

I read through some dull and mercilessly awful stuff, but I trekked on the to the bottom to find my favorite strip since I was a wee lad, Garfield. Garfield would never let me down. He was America's fat cat, the lasagna lover, Monday hater, overweight super star cat. How could Garfield ever be bad? I made my way down the page to the bottom and soaked in that orange feline taste.

And it was bland and horrible and I hated it.

I never looked back on it, and have honestly not read a Garfield strip since. But something struck me. Garfield was loving 34 years old. How in the forget?

Thus this comic was born, aka, how I suspected the daily Garfield strip was doing since I last read it:

That was August of last year. Somehow I stumbled upon my own comic just recently, and it hit me: this is a pretty decent idea for a parody strip about the state of syndicated comics these days. Who better to bring us laughs at his own expense once more than the great Garfield? Before you (or Jim Davis and his, I'm assuming, cat based lawyers) come down on me for originality, I simply say: this is fan-fiction.

So I present to you a (hopefully) series to come, Garfield's Dead:

Suggestions for future strips and ideas are of course welcome, and before you say anything, yes the art style is very rushed, it's both sort of a stylistic choice as well as a time saver. Thank you, move along.

Off Topic / [Offline] Swholli's Halloween Theater
« on: October 06, 2013, 04:15:50 AM »

For all of October, I on my livestreaming channel SwholliLIVE, shall be presenting some of the cheesiest, goofiest, stupidest, downright worst feature films to ever bear the genre "horror."

In an homage to the beloved Mystery Science Theater 3000, myself and occasional company (contact me if you're interested in participating, it's all done through Skype) riff on the films; except this is live, complete improvisation, no rehearsals.

Quck stuff:

The distribution of the films in their current form is protected under the fair use act as they are a form of critique on the bodies themselves and education towards film as a medium (plus for a bunch of richard jokes, probably).

But I can't watch the show live!

Never fret, these are the highlights! I'll edit all all of the filler/unfunny stuff and only give you the good stuff. You don't get the experience of the whole film, but it gives you a nice vignette of the installments if we're doing a series or something.

Games / Dynamite Cop - SEGA Dreamcast review (Suave Zouaves)
« on: August 08, 2013, 12:37:14 PM »

Dynamite Cop (Dreamcast)

Dynamite Cop, known in Japan as Dynamite Deka 2 (ダイナマイト刑事2 Dainamaito Deka Tsu?), is a 1998 beat 'em up video game published by Sega and initially released in arcades on Sega Model 2 hardware. It is the sequel to the 1996 game, Dynamite Deka which was released outside of Japan as Die Hard Arcade. The game was ported to the Dreamcast and released internationally in 1999, this time without the Die Hard license. A revised version, Dynamite Deka EX: Asian Dynamite, was released exclusively for Japan in 2006. It was developed by Sega Shanghai, under supervision from the original team.

Hello blockland. It's been a while since I've posted any original content here.

Anyway, if you remember the last time I did let's plays, they seemed to go about pretty well, so I decided to do some more on my main channel. The first episode is the game Darksiders.

It includes a facecam because I'm a victim to trends as well as trying new things.

I hope you enjoy and get at least one chuckle out of it.

These videos are always fun to make, but I'm never sure of what to do next. Aside from Darksiders, what would you guys like to see?

Games / Jurassic Park (Sega Genesis) Review - Revisit

A long time ago I told you guys about this.

It was a new Youtube channel with a review of Jurassic Park: The Game for Sega Genesis.

You all seemed to like it for the most part, but alas I was young and naive back then.

Basically, pulling an Angry Video Game Nerd move here, I did this:

Jurassic Park (Sega Genesis) - Revisit

I am actually quite proud of this one, even a little more so than the other ones because this one has some (what I think are) genuinely funny moments in it.

Will we actually keep up on these still? I dunno, maybe. I'll be doing another LP season of TellTale games, so there's at least that.

Subscribe if you aren't already, it'd mean a lot.

My friends, esteemed internet colleagues and funnymen; my I venture to inform you that something monumental has happened in my life.

In mid 2007, a young boy posted a video of the popular video game, Halo 1, with the ending screen captured from a cam hack and edited so that when the main character, Master Chief, takes off his helmet it shows instead the young boy's face (rather than another helmet if you watch the original). The young boy, making this video for a friend (who was excited for the upcoming release of Halo 3) as such tagged the video with just that, "Halo 3, Master Chief's Real Face."

Now, you might have seen this video posted by me once or twice to comment on some of the fantastically horrible (and unintelligent drivel) of a comment section I have on this video.

But last night at roughly 9'o'clock EST, something glorious happened. The video has reached 1,000,000 views!

That's 1,000,000 people watching my video, and 1,000,000 butthurt 13 year-olds with a complex. It's hilarious and has provided me with more than just laughs, too. This video has actually earned me $200, whole dollars, in a year! Gotta love the advertising industry: does it have an audience even though it's horribly hated? Yeah, people will still click on links under it. And by golly, they actually do. I've been paid real money to be sure of it. I have been paid to troll. I guess that makes me a professional.

tl;dr - Halo video reaches 1,000,000 views, nerds butthurt everywhere, fun is had by all.

Also, Happy Easter. Is this a coincidence? I think not. For I am the lord risen, and I said among thee: Master Chief is a massive cigaretteot.

You've never laid eyes on such a rag tag group of individuals and called them a crew before.

You're not exactly used to no one wearing standard uniform, seeing as you've served most of your life in the Federation Star Navy. And such diversity. Not only non-humans, but there are even some former rebels amongst them. You were never exactly a fan of the war, but then the Republic was never kind to you, either.

This should make for an interesting trip.

Captain House: Good evening ladies, gentlemen, and non-men. As you're aware, we are about to embark on a historic and important mission for the good people of our homelands. I expect that, as your captain, I am hopefully able to serve you in the utmost dignity. If you respect me, I will respect you. This isn't just my ship. It's our home for the next few months, I run a rather lose ship considering our not-so-formal setting. Now, I want you to remember there are civilians down in the lower decks, and they will never deserve anything less than your best. We are to protect them as well as we would each other, and I want to see you all give it everything you have for the sake of the safety of ourselves and our ship. Lastly, I want to welcome you all aboard the Endeavour, officially. I look forward to the time we spend with each other. Now, if you don't mind, I need to call roll.

You pause, take a look at the roster, and begin.

Captain House: Second Officer Tach Aertyp?

Tach Aertyp: Aye-aye captain.

Captain House: Pilot Nikolas?

Nikolas: Present, sir.

Captain House: Communications Officer Etilletas?

Etilletas: Sir.

Captain House: Weapons Officer Paaron and Secondary Weapons Officer Bronson Jack?

Paaron: Aye.

Bronson Jack: Aye, sir.

Captain House: Science Officer Ensign Verigan?

He nods thoughtfully.

Captain House: Engineer Lance and Secondary Engineer Jack Golem?

Lance: Present.

Jack Golem: Here, sir.

Captain House: And finally, Chief Medical Officer Sergej Domi and Medical Officer Fouto Insigin?

Sergej Domi: Yo.

Fouto Insigin: Yes, sir.

Captain House: Alright, everyone back to your positions.

You return to the bridge and are about to take a seat in the captain's chair when Etilletas enters.

Etilletas: Permission to enter the bridge, sir?

Captain House: By all means, and next time, feel free to simply enter. I'm not that professional. I haven't strictly been following protocol since before the war.

Etilletas: Aye, Captain. We're being hailed by one of the freighter ships.

Captain House: On screen.

The croggy old alien's pale blue skin is accented next to his sunken blue eyes and wispy grey hair.

Freighter Captain: This is Cargo 427 to The Endeavour. Cargo 428's Captain and I have prepared this small speech to greet you: first, stay out of our way. You may think you're calling the shots here, but you're just security detail. We've been shipping Omega across the FTLways for centuires and we can handle some Suixjen pirates. Second, this is a formal warning. If you attempt to tell us how to command our ships, we will not hesitate to fire upon you and call it a scan malfunction. C-427, out.

Captain House: Well, he certainly seems friendly.

Tach Aertyp: Captain, what should we do?

Aww yeaaaah.

So today is the day I turn 20.

That is, count them, five morphdays spent here.

I am two decades old now.

Yeah, I know there are some of you older than that *cough*Bisjac*cough* but hey, you only get to be 20 once. Next year I get to drink!
