Games / Blockland Forum's Turkey Bowl 2012 - TF2 Tournament
« on: November 01, 2012, 12:38:16 AM »

What's this?

Hello all. As you have probably guessed, it is now officially Nov. 1st (EST) which means it's time for this months holiday festivities and pastimes!

And no, not actually football.

Are you a fan of Valve's Team Fortress 2? Do you and a group of friends or forum members have what it takes to compete against other players? Do you know 8 other people willing to form a team with you for the chance of glory?

If you answered yes to any of those questions, then perhaps you'd be interested in our first annual Turkey Bowl. A TF2 double elimination tournament with the chance of real world prizes!*

*Prize will most likely be a real cup trophy with your user name engraved on it. This is, after all, only internet glory.

How do I join?

There are a maximum limit of twelve teams and minimum of six.

To join you must post that you want to be a team captain. In order to be a team captain you must already have at least two other members on your team (if not the full nine). If you wish to play but do not know anyone else to play with, find a team captain who is short on members and join their roster.

Come up with a team name.

Your team will only be added to the official list when you have 8 members and yourself, each of which may play as one and only one class type (meaning you must have exactly one of each class type per team). This is also known as Highlander mode.

When is all of this happening?

The schedule is thus:

Thursday Nov. 1st to Thursday Nov. 8th (1 week) - Teambuilding. Use this time to construct a nine man team to join the tournament. On Nov. 8th a minimum of six and maximum of twelve teams will be added to the brackets. That will be the last day to sign up for this, you have a week. Go.

Monday Nov. 12th to Sunday Nov. 18th (1 week) - The initial games. This will be a week of live broadcasted games (livestreamed with your host and commentators, myself and NicktheSushi, aka TheDoktar) set to your schedule. They will be no earlier than 3'o'clock PM and last no later than EST to 10'o'clock EST (the weekend, of course, will be much more flexible). Let us know when you and your team are best able to compete. You will get one rain check if you're unable to attend your set match time. TF2 games do move rather quickly, so it is possible we could get all of these games done over a weekend. However, we'd like to use the whole week if possible to make it less chaotic. The games will work as such: Best two out of three games. The first game mode and map will be randomized. The winner of the first round gets choice on second map and second game mode. If they lose that round, the other team has a the same choices for the tie breaker

Thursday Nov. 22nd (Thanksgiving) - Turkey Bowl! The last two remaining teams (after given three days to either rest or practice or what-have-you) will compete in the final best 3 out of 5 games for the final glory of being named the Turkey Bowl Champs and you and your team will receive a prize each.

What have you done? Seriously, what have you done?

Cousin just posted this (lives in London).

I don't know if you've exported these to the states yet, but we don't want them. You're ruining the one tradition you can claim besides tea and knickers.

I bought a new (old) radio that was either built in (unlikely) or modeled after a 1932 style radio.

Have it hooked up to play internet radio (big band music, of course).

Just so you can get the full effect of how awesome this radio is:

 (Youtube Video)

P.S.

I actually do this sort of thing all the time. Let me know if anyone is interested in learning more about the things I find, I love talking about oldstuff and would totally make new videos (possibly of me actually doing the shopping so you can see the neat stuff I don't buy).

Off Topic / Stop Bullying: Speak Up Comics - Revival
« on: August 06, 2012, 02:13:36 AM »

Can this be a thing again? Let's make this a thing again.

Stop Bullying: Speak Up is an awareness campaign by Bitstrips and Cartoon Network. The goal was to use the comic creating application that Bitstrips provides and have kids create PSA comics about why bullying is bad.

Of course, this being the internet, it backfired a little.

The comic creator and the campaign themselves never went away, but I'm calling it "back" to the Blockland forums attentions to make some insane and funny comics with it.

Seriously, if you remember the old topic, chances are you had fun with it. Well, let's do that again.

Vist http://stopbullying.bitstrips.com/challenge/ and start making comics.

I got tired of that old Let's Play I did a long time ago, so I decided to wrap it up like this:

Suave Zouave's Let's Play Half-Life [PART INFINITY]

Pretty suiting, I think.

Wraps up the entire plot of Half Life in one sleek, humorous video.

If you've not played Half Life, this is what you missed.

Creativity / 8-Bit Nintendo Killer, Swholli's New (New) Song
« on: May 17, 2012, 01:05:33 AM »
Hey there, remember when I wrote that song about presidents throwing a party?

Also part of the album Other Lovely Dinosaurs is 8-Bit Nintendo Killer, a song about a crazed video game player who challenges you to old school gaming matches and if you lose, he kills you.

I wrote this song tonight out of boredom and some parts are a bit wobbly (and some are purposefully out of tune grinding chords in order to make you uneasy).

http://swholli.tumblr.com/post/23214712751/8-bit-nintendo-killer-swholli-other-lovely
(Tumblr link like always; everyone has one now adays, you might as well follow me too).

And as per every song I've posted so far, here are the lyrics:

Quote from: 8-Bit Nintendo Killer
There's a man.

They call the 8-bit Nintendo Killer.

He's a freak.

A real misfit of nature.

Goes down the street.

A deathwish from every eye.

But he knows

Not everyone is as they seem.

He controls

Up up down down left right A B

The Legends are true (he can kill with a joystick)

Now he's after you (You better be quick)

He's coming around (You're just another pawn)

So don't make a sound (the game is on)

You step up

You tell em that you've had enough

He gets down

And looks square in the eyes

You challenge me?

He bellows throught the town.

I'm the professor

The master blaster of the blast processor

You're going down

To hell and beck to tell em I said hello

The Legends are true (he can kill with a joystick)

Now he's after you (You better be quick)

He's coming around (You're just another pawn)

So don't make a sound (the game is on)

It's a crowdless room

The arcade is bare

He's killed all your friends

And there's no one left

So you make your move

A quick jolt to the right

He trips and falls

Bashing his head on the floor

Victory is yours

Except he has an extra life.

You look down, upon his courpse
The rotting life escapes

Except now, you feel the curse
You feel his awful fate

You must win, you must be the best
You've become the killer.

The Legends are true (he can kill with a joystick)

Now he's after you (You better be quick)

He's coming around (You're just another pawn)

So don't make a sound (the game is on)

Ever wondered how to make pizza from scratch?

Want to do it for an affordable 10 to 15 bucks (feeds 8 at one slice per person and 4 at two per person- duh)?

Want to watch me teach you how to do it with cheesy music in the background?

Well then do I have a video for you!

She was just so happy to go and see her cherry trees blossoming, and she had her little coat on and everything.

Oh my god she is the sweetest old lady.

Oh and if you guys got to meet the BAMF that is my grandpa (her husband) you would just cream yourselves with cute.

Creativity / Going to the Park (Short Film by Swholli)
« on: March 08, 2012, 01:12:49 AM »
If anyone were to ask me what I did today with the beautiful weather, I only need to direct you to this video.

A silent, experimental short film that deals in abstracts and realism.

No fancy camera work; just cinematography in mind. Attempting to add cinematic to the listless. The concept had gritty home movies in mind, but taking them to string a meaningful if not artsy story.

This is both a nonfiction piece as well as a narrative on themes. I don't claim some sort of higher understanding however, as these themes were created through happy accidents. The idea was to go to the park and shoot the sunset. What I ended up getting was some pretty nice, but ultimately plot lacking shots. So, it wasn't until editing and post that any sort of "story" was structured.

Lastly, as not to claim some sort of false sense of the profound or pompous flirtation with ideas that aren't mine, I leave it to you, the viewer, to decide ultimately what you think this piece is about.

I Ran is performed by A Flock of Seagulls and is copyright 1982.

Dust in the Wind is performed by Kansas and is copyright 1977.

Off Topic / Swholli and Wedge For Blockland President
« on: February 20, 2012, 01:55:13 PM »

The official campaign thread for Forum Presidential Candidate, Swholli, and his running mate, Wedge.

When you think about the the forum as of today, you might not even realize that it wasn't always this way. A long time ago, on a forum far, far away we had unity. We were small and we were smart and we believed in the future.

Today we forget that. Today we're too concerned about where we are and where we've been. We give nostalgia too much credit and don't look to advancements.

Our founders believed in Blockland and what it could become. I do today.

Blocklanders opposed the introduction of retail, but I voted for it.

Blocklanders opposed v9 and brick events, calling it a Garrys Mod ripoff. We now use events for our everyday builds. I voted for it.

And now, when we face yet another update, another challenge of our time, we have those who oppose it. But what are they really opposing? They're opposing change, progress, and the future.  I've supported v21 since its initial announcement and will continue to support it.

I'm willing to negotiate with the do-nothing Badpsot, I'm willing to take it to the higher ups and represent you, the forum.

I believe in Blockland, and I believe in the future.

My forum name is Swholli, and I'm running for the Presidency of the Blockland Forums.

Let it also be noted that I am not trying to be Obama, but instead parody him.

This whole campaign is going to be a parody of American politics, but I'm serious about being BL president.

v21 is going to change the face of Blockland forever and I won't hear it. Let's rebel against the evil Baldspot and Lord of Shadows and make our own game!

In its current stage of development, there is nothing abnormal about BL:S. It is just a simple Half-Life 2 Source Mod in the making. But when it is finished it will change the face of PC and even console gaming as we know it. It will use many different technologies never introduced to gaming before to make the gamers dream game. It will use advanced features such as dynamic water, dynamic weather, huge enviroments detailed at minifig scale, and the ability to create thousands or even millions of bricks with absolutely no lag at all. How can this be you ask? Simple. A few or all of the people working on BL:S do not think on the normal lines of todays videogame industry. When you add the element of impossibility to the equation unexpected things can occur. We are not going to release our secrets and plans yet, but we might in the near future. Stay updated with us see where were going, and we might slip a little bit of "resources" to you.
