Off Topic / Problems installing some GP apps (Android)

It appears that some apps that I attempt to install simply don't work on my device. It's a very new tablet, so it's not like I have a potato from 2002. Whenever I try to install some apps (notably simulators), it downloads the app but then says that it can't install onto the card or internal storage.

I did google it, but I keep getting Yahoo answers from people whining about not wanting to update games/system.

Suggestions would be helpful.

Post movies with memorable and/or classic car chases. I'll put them into a poll and we'll see where we stand on the best cinematic car chase.

To be in poll:

• Gone in 60 Seconds (1974)

- A 34 minute long chase against police as Maindrian Pace (H.B. Halicki) tries to escape in a stolen '73 Ford Mustang (codenamed "Eleanor"). 93 vehicles are destroyed (including the Mustang) as the chase rampages through six California cities from Long Beach to Carson.

• The Blues Brothers (1980)

- Numerous vehicular chases, mainly around Chicago, as Jake (John Belushi) and Elwood Blues (Dan Aykroyd) try to raise funds for their childhood home, a Catholic orphanage. As they try to rebuild their band, they make several enemies (Illinois national socialists, Jake's ex-wife, police/military, revenge-driven bands, etc) who join in car chases from Chicago to shopping malls. All car chases feature Jake and Elwood driving their retired '74 Dodge Monaco patrol car.

• Duel (1971)

- David Mann (Dennis Weaver) is an innocent middle aged man on a business trip. After a minor confrontation with a gas tanker ('55 Peterbilt 255) while driving his '71 Plymouth Valiant, the truck driver begins to relentlessly terrorize him as Mann tries to escape certain death.

• Bullitt (1968)

- The classic car chase where Lt. Frank Bullitt (Steve McQueen), driving his iconic green '68 Ford Mustang GT, pursues a mob boss's hitmen through San Francisco.

Off Topic / I may be at risk for chicken pox.

It's basically all a big complicated circle meshed together with some unfortunate events.

A few days ago, my mom was having trouble with an irritating rash on her arm. It was bad enough that it was making her sick and depleting the strength in that arm. She went to a doctor and was diagnosed with shingles. She is very young in comparison to those who usually get shingles, but it was likely triggered by massive amounts of stress and the fact that she had chicken pox not once, but twice, as a child (apparently didn't become immune after the first time).

My mom quickly began going over the vaccine records for all of the kids (including me). Either my record was not updated or I apparently never got the immunization for it. I had an appointment to get a booster yesterday, but Walgreens cancelled the appointment as I was walking out the door and rescheduled it for this morning. I showed up at Walgreens this morning for it, and they told me that I never made an appointment (wth?) and sent me out.

Never made another appointment and probably won't. I'll just have to be careful. I likely won't pick it up from my mom, but there is a good chance that I could get it from my baby sister (who is always around and touching my mom) if she makes herself contagious. That is, if I didn't get the vaccine when I was younger.

The next step is to call my childhood doctors and see if they have records of me being vaccinated for chicken pox. If so, I probably have nothing to worry about. If not, I better stay away from my mom and baby sister.

My dad got Chinese food today. After eating and stuff, I picked up a fortune cookie and opened it. There was nothing inside, thus meaning that I have no destiny.

My life could very well be over.

Starting with the back story:

My original art teacher who uses the room left on maternity leave in September. She had a substitute (an art teacher from Memphis, probably in his 30s) lined up to cover the remainder of the semester. He came in as soon as she left, had us finish the tattoo project we were working on, and started us with making piñatas.

Throughout that entire project (lasted about a month, and I still never got mine done), he was rather unhelpful with everyone. He'd just sit at his computer silently or walk around the room making condescending remarks about the projects belonging to choice kids that he didn't like (usually the kids who missed school, were noisy, or made lazy designs such as basic geometric shapes).

The reason my project was never finished appeared to be his fault. I needed yellow tissue paper and black tissue paper (the only colors I needed for my project) but the supplies eventually dwindled and ran out. When the black was getting low, I went and informed him about it and he replied with, "Yeah I know. I'll have to pick up more tomorrow." I would then work with my yellow portions. Tomorrow came, he says he forgot. Next day, he said, "Michael's [arts and crafts store] didn't have it." After almost a week of that repeating, the yellow ran out. I told him that I literally could not work on my project at all until I had either yellow or black paper. Next day, no yellow or black. I just had to sit for an hour and do nothing.

The next day, I was at school and was walking to the art room. Two people in my class were at the door because the room was shut and locked with the lights off. The second bell rang meaning that everyone at school has five minutes to be in class. Still waiting. Everyone in my class eventually arrived at the room which remained locked. The final bell rang and the hallway was completely empty except for the big clump of kids who couldn't get in. The teacher in the adjoining room went through her room and to a door that connected her room to my room and unlocked the door from the inside so we could get in. A lady i didnt know came in and said that she had gotten word that we needed several colors of paper. She took orders (including mine) and left. After an hour of sitting and doing nothing (still no paper I can use), he finally shows up saying, "My alarm didn't go off and I was tired because I had to load trucks yesterday." M'kay.

The day after that, that woman who took the paper orders came through the door with armloads spilling over with tissue paper (yellow and black included), more than enough to finish my project. After she left, my substitute announced that the deadline was in two days. I was so far behind that I could never make the due date, and I didn't. I ended up with an 80% on the project because it was incomplete.

The day after piñatas were "done" (only two people in my class managed to finish, only because they took their projects home as homework almost every day), he started us on the next thing, where we had to cover a 16"x16" piece of white cardboard using glue and colored string to make pictorial representations of an important life event. He then said we had one week (aka ~4 hours class time, most of which is taken up by opening announcements and lecture/demonstration) to finish and turn in the whole thing. Everyone at my table was totally pissed and we all realized we could never finish by then. The due date was yesterday (Tuesday). On Monday, I was probably about 15% done, and ahead of almost everyone.

Yesterday came. I walked into the room and a different person was at the desk. He was just a friendly middle aged man (who likes corvettes lol) and was wearing the substitute placard around his neck, so I just figured that the usual guy I'd been dealing with was sick. I got my stuff out to begin working and the teacher in the adjoining room came in. She informed us that the previous art teacher would no longer be teaching this class. When she was asked why, she just replied with, "He just has other things to do."

I remember smiling and having to cover my face so no one would notice. With the way her tone sounded and his sketchy behavior, I think it's pretty reasonable to think he got fired.

Out of everywhere in the first world western hemisphere, the next possible Ebola case happens in my county. Considered low risk and I'm not worried about it, the odds of this happening in the Meth Capital of the World is surprisingly slim.

Off Topic / Clean Master just about wrecked my tablet.

Just recently, I posted a thread inquiring about other junk cleaning apps because I had been having issues with Clean Master not working and constantly crashing on me (even sending crash messages when not in use). About 30 minutes ago, I was using Google Play to look at CCleaner. Clean Master also appeared in the search results and said that I was behind on updates.

I thought that it was a reasonable possibility that Clean Master was not working because I hadn't been updating it, so I went ahead and downloaded the update. Immediately after it was installed, the operating system was overloaded with hundreds of crash messages from every app on my tablet (including the Launcher, app store, apps that I hadn't used in months, and obscure data storages that meant nothing to normal usage) suddenly opening and crashing repeatedly. I was trying to clear all the messages but they continued appearing faster than I could get rid of them. I had to do a forced crash. I powered it back on and it continued, requiring a second forced crash. Third time, same thing. Fourth time, I used the button on the back to force it off. Fifth time on and it wouldn't even make it past the greeting screen. I took it to my dad and we messed with it for a bit, finally getting it to re-boot. I managed to get to the Clean Master app and uninstalled it immediately, and the crash messages instantly stopped.

I don't have any hell of an idea what happened there.

That’s right, it’s happening again. After the unprecedented participation and involvement last year (132 pages long if anyone counted), I’ve decided to give this another run. There will be a few changes this year, but none will be drastic from the rules last year.
Let’s give a final round of applause to the 2013 winners and finalists:

Synopsis:

In the Blocklander of the Year competition, everyone who cares to participate starts off by nominating their top five favorite Blockland users (forums and/or in-game). Preferably, the nominations are confidential so no one knows who voted for whom. I store all of the nominees until the nomination deadline, where I then use a completely random source to choose names over a series of polls. All nominees will appear in a poll at some time. The 1st and 2nd place winners of each poll (usually consisting of a divisible number <10 compared the total nominations) will then move to the semi-finals. Four users will move from the semi-finals to the final poll, which ends on January 01. The winner of that poll will be our 2014 Blocklander of the Year.
Rules:

All the rules from last year apply for this session as well, with a few amendments being made.

1.   You may not nominate yourself.
2.   You may only nominate a maximum of five people.
3.   You may not nominate someone multiple times.
4.   If possible, it is preferred that you nominate users over PM to me.

Schedule:

This is still fairly uncertain due to an unknown expectation on nominations and changing out polls in comparison to my real life schedule. I can usually get online only at random times throughout the day so last year’s “8PM Switchout” is probably not going to work.

November 15: Preparations begin. Advertising is available as well as discussion.
November 29: Nominations are opened.
December 10-20 (depends on traffic): Nominations are closed and the polls begin.
December 21-28 (depends): Semi-finals
December 28 – December 31: Final poll

Alright, here's how the future is going to go.

There will be a total of 8 polls, with this current one being 1 of 8. Polls #1-4 will have 10 options. Polls #5-8 will have 11 options.

Altogether, 85 individuals were nominated for the contest. Of those, 16 will move to the semi-finals (two winners in each poll). Another round of semi-finals will follow suit, with 8 users.

After that poll is done, the top 4 will be in the finals, and the winner of that will get the title.

Prizes:

Although I was seriously considering something based on Steam cash or game rewards, I simply cannot afford to do that; maybe next year. I don’t know anything about what ended up happening, but Nal offered VIP of the New Year’s Server to last year’s champion…hint hint??
FAQs (feel free to add more):

Do I have to nominate five people?: No, it can be fewer, but no more than five.

Do you have a system for resolving tiebreakers?: Yes. If I close a poll and there is a tie for first place, there will be a tiebreaker round for each tiebreaking incident after all the polls are done. This may result in some scheduling changes.

The person I want to nominate has been banned, and is no longer part of the forums as far as I know, but is not a ban-on-sight user. Can I still nominate them, assuming they were active sometime during this year?: Yes. It is no different than someone taking a leave of absence.

Does my nominee have to be a member of the forums?: No, it can be someone in-game.

My nominee is a ban-on-sight user on the forums, but is still very active in-game. Can I nominate them?: No. If someone was bad enough to be forcefully removed to the point of permanent exile, they cannot be nominated.

My PM privileges have been revoked. Can I still nominate users?: Yes. Either do it here or by some random lucky coincidence, catch me on Steam.

I’m too lazy to PM you. Can I still nominate users?: Yes…I just prefer PMs so I can always find them later without digging through the thread.

Can I change my nomination(s)?: Yes, once again by preferred PM.

Can I nominate someone who won last year?: Yes.

Is Tenshi eligible for nomination?: Yes.

What happens if someone in the contest is permanently banished over the course of operations?: If it happened while nominations are still opened, those who nominated that user will be able to put in a new user. If it happens during the polls, they will simply be removed, except in the case of finals. If it happens during finals, the fifth place contender will move up to take their place and the poll will be restarted.

Off Topic / Are my expected standards too high?

Title...

I am once again having issues with my parents expecting way too much from me in terms of academics, my mom in particular. In June, I took the ACT and got a 27. They didn't think it was good enough and told me to take it again to get the science and math portions higher. I did, but lost points on what I had gotten high before and came around with another 27. My mom is furious now saying that I never study in school and that I don't get enough homework.

As you can see from the attached screenshots, that is either a) the most illogical thing that can be said in this situation or b) she really thinks that those percentages are not good.

I'm used to this to a point. The last time my mom found out I got a B in one of my in-class 10pt assignments (Spanish II), she was pissed for two days and argued for an hour straight after the incident. Getting As isn't that hard for me (being matter of fact, no intended bragging), but a once in a while slide to a B doesn't seem too unreasonable.

To be fair, it was a part of a baby tooth that broke like four times. Glad it's out now. I can feel a dent in my gums from where it was.

Off Topic / RIP Oscar Taveras [1992-2014]

I wasn't going to make a thread on this, but it's sad enough that I decided to do it.

Oscar Taveras, 22, was killed in a car accident in the Dominican Republic. He had just returned home after the Cardinals were eliminated in the NLCS. He was out driving his Camaro after some intense rain, which likely had to do with the accident. His 18 year old girlfriend was also killed.

RIP

He's the most recent St. Louis Cardinal to die in mid-contract since Josh Hanrooster in 2007, who was killed in a car accident while driving under the influence of alcohol.

Off Topic / I need a new junk cleaning app (android).

Explained in title.

I've been using Clean Master ever since I got my android tablet last December, but for the past month or so, something has been wrong with it. I started getting popups saying things like, "Clean Master has now closed" with the options to close the message or report the problem. The popups got more and more numerous and it is always shifting my screen around, losing messages that I'm in the middle of typing, and making the CPU spend all its time trying to load crash messages instead of what I'm trying to do.

I've tried reporting problems and reinstalling the app, but nothing is working and I just want to get something else.

Suggestions?
