This game is pretty brutal, but once you get into it then it's really fun

Make them less chibi?

Make them whatever you want, either way you'll have the basic character design and you'll be free to draw it in the style you want

Trying to understand what you say...

It's not that difficult, find a picture of a players character from the game Maplestory and then draw it in your own style.
Since the characters are simple there'll be a fair bit of room for you to stretch your elbows while drawing it, should probably serve well for practice

Before I do, I would actually appreciate something a little simpler.

Find a picture of a Maplestory character and then adapt it in your style.

well seeing as it'll be up in a manner similar to gaap's i think it looks quite nice
in fact part of the inspiration to the dress is

...okay that isn't exactly the modest fashion of dress i'm using but it gets the hair idea along nicely and i am using a similar bodice

Meh, hairstyle isn't my cup of tea personally.
But then I'm a boring sod who only likes straight & long hair

The drums were digitally written.
