If a server is actually dead rather than just not port-forwarded then it'll still show up with "---" ping on the menu.
There is no way to tell the difference, unless the server actually tries connecting or something.

Games / Conquer on Contact - lets populate the game world!
« on: January 30, 2010, 09:26:02 AM »
Conquer on Contact is a very basic web browser game, though it has a very nice level of polish.
The basics of it are you have an army that you can move around, with tiles where you can increase the size of your army, tiles that decrease your army size but temporarily boost its power, and a few other tile types.

It's not that complicated or special, but seeing as there are currently three players on the board, I would like to see what a game with more people playing looks like.

No screen shot provided because you click the link and you're playing.  If you want to create an account it will let you do so with the army you started without an account.

Suggestions & Requests / Re: v15 suggestions

A tag system wouldn't work very well.  It'd add more time to loading the server list (which we don't need with an expanding server list...), and many hosts would just add every tag they could so that their server shows up on most searches.

A favorites system would be nice, but it'd really be nice if Badspot would reveal the id of the hoster, so that favorites don't break when someone gets a name change.

I guess same thing as ??? in v13?
No.
??? Means you're yet to get an answer from the server ping.
--- Means that the server can't be pinged.

Same. And I UPnP is turned on. I can even host, and my ports are forwarded.
Note that some ISPs block hosting, so some people may not be able to host no matter what you do.  Call them up and ask if they do.

Games / Re: signing up for beta testing

If you have very high end stats, you do have two things going for you:
1. You're not the average Joe, you'll be more noticeable as a serious player.
2. With big studios especially, they need less of a test of performance (they have plenty of access to machines with ranges of capability) as they do with varieties of hardware.  Many kids will sign up for a beta test with their crappy computer, but you will stand out as having unusual hardware that they have less possible testers for.

With public beta tests for companies larger than a few people they really are looking for a large variety of machines for best testing entry.  Only with really small studios do they not have the capabilities to figure out minimum recommended hardware, and even then they will have far more people falling on the wayward end than the high speck end (which as I've said, they need to test also.)  Also, late beta tests (aka the public betas most people get into) are far less about finding out how well it will run on machines, and much more about testing server loads and tweaking gameplay.  Earlier beta and alpha tests care more about how well the game is and tuning the game to get the maximum fun and intuitiveness.  They care less about minimum requirements as new code is being added, and they will optimize later.

So all in all, beta tests don't care that much about performance as they do about gameplay, and where performance does count almost all the time a high performance machine is better.

Badspot doesn't have access to every router ever made to test.  Try yourself and only post if it doesn't work.  It should work and does work for almost all routers.

Really? I answered you silly question with the very next post, where I answered another of your questions.
The OS of your computer does not make a difference, the feature works by talking to your router and telling it to forward the ports.

What about if I have a Motorola SURFboard® Cable Modem my Apple airport? (No router) Picture Then how would I host a server?
Try hosting, and have a couple people try to join and message back here if it doesn't work.
I had problems in v13 with texture cache that was fixed by disabling some bufferobjects pref, but now it's back. What should I do to fix it?
Turn on disable buffer objects again, the update turned it off.

Bug:

Clear spam bricks will clear bricks that are built into terrain, but are also build on to baseplates.

-What is UPnP?
A protocol that allows programs to tell the router to port forward automatically.
-How would I be able to stop my router from randomizing UDP origin Ports?
Look around at your settings, you may not to be able to, but port forwarding should fix it anyways.

The east coast exploded.
It's like there is a line* of server explosion that moves from East to West.  I'm sure it was present before, but it's much more noticeable now.

A static IP shouldn't be needed to host.

The OS of your computer does not make a difference, the feature works by talking to your router and telling it to forward the ports.
