recanted or changed

recanted means the opinion is completely disposed of

changed means modified

the defendant used this wording specifically so people like you would think that the witnesses completely disputed their statements, which didn't happen.

this, and why do i care

a dude who got executed for a crime of which there is no physical evidence of him committing said crime and of the original 9 witnesses that got him convicted 7 have taken back their statements and said that the police pressured them into proclaiming him guilty
you should care because this is basically why the current american justice system is flawed in one case

what are you referring to?

he's using the testimonies of the 9 witnesses (of whom 7 have recanted their statements and said they were pressured by police into declaring him guilty) as a defense for him being guilty
