when you pull the trigger, that motion is transferred to a mechanism which hits the primer in a bullet (or rim in 22 or cheaper cartridges). the primer (or rim) sparks, igniting the gunpowder and sending the bullet through the barrel. in most guns manufactured today, some of the energy from the explosion is used to move the slide back for a fraction of a second, allowing the spring in the magazine to push another bullet into the chamber. however, you do not need a slide or magazine for a gun to function properly. you can make guns that have one (or more) chambers that you have to manually load the bullet into. these are often called zip guns. it's entirely possible to make a fully working semi-auto or even auto, however.

Well somehow criminals, murder and robbery was everywhere.except the most deaths any town in the wild west saw in one year was 5. towns mostly averaged 1.5 deaths a year. the whole wild west myth is bullstuff.
